Holy Name Cathederal on fire

An extra-alarm fire is burning on the roof of the Holy Name Cathedral on the Near North Side on Wednesday morning.

A still alarm was called at 5:29 a.m. for a fire that was burning in the roof of the Holy Name Cathedral, on the 730 block of North State Street, according to Fire Media Affairs Asst. Director Eve Rodriguez.

The fire was raised to a still-and-box alarm at 5:39 a.m. and further escalated to a 2-11 alarm at 5:55 a.m., according to Rodriguez, who said no injuries have been reported as of 6:10 a.m., but the roof was still burning.

Flames are coming from the roof of the church, according to a witness on the scene. At least six fire department engines -- three with ladders -- and two ambulances are on the scene.

According to police, the fire was reported on the 750 block of North Wabash Avenue.

The rectory is being evacuated, according to police, who said a CTA warming bus is being requested.

Police and fire remain on the scene.

Did I accidentally walk past it?

Seriously, I hope the damage isn't too severe, and that no one is injured (early reports say there are no injuries).

Report I saw from the Trib this AM said that the fire was in the cuckold, in the roof, and was contained. There was some water coming into the altar area though, which could cause damage there.

ETA: Also, that there were some renovations going on in that area of the church.

Linky, with pics.

My high school graduation ceremony was held there. Very beautiful setting, its sad to see that it might be destroyed.

Cuckold, or cockloft (even better). Its up in the roof of a cathedral.

I won't even try to Google it at work, but its a real word.

I'd never heard cuckold used to describe an architectural feature is all.

The google search is NSFW. based on this definition

A cuckold is a married man with an adulterous wife. Due to the word's original meaning, a man who is unwittingly raising another man's child, it refers to a man who is unaware of his victimization. Because of this association, it is one of the few gender specific words in the English language without a feminine counterpart. In current usage it sometimes refers to non-married couples in committed relationships, although this is not the traditional meaning. A man who knows and acquiesced in his wife’s taking of another lover was called a wittol, itself a derivation from the Middle English for "witting (as in knowing) cuckold."

Based on cockloft, it is sfw, from a firefighting jargon list . . .

Cockloft: structural space above ceiling and below rafters, often connecting adjacent occupancies and permitting fire to spread laterally, often unseen.

I'm going to start a reality porn site in the vein of MikesApartment called COCKLOFT. Should be gangbusters. Now to find some hot eurowhores.

A cockloft at a Catholic church.

More proof that reality is funnier than fiction.

There's been an interesting bit of etymological collision here. I couldn't find the Trib article you referenced - or any other article referring to the cuckold or cockloft. I believe, though, that the term the rib used should have been cockhold - literally place in which roosters are kept (= cockloft). Online, I see the two (more, really) spellings used interchangeably in reference to a man unknowingly married to an unfaithful spouse.

As believable an etymology it would be, the notion of cuckold/cuckolded, etc. referencing multiple roosters under the roof (suggestive of infidelity), the true etymology is even more interesting. Cuckold/cuckolded, etc., are terms that actually refer to the cookoo bird, a well-known nest parasite that will sneak it's eggs into the nests of other birds, thus duping the parents to raise a fledgling that is not its own. In the same way, unwitting husbands of unfaithful wives can be cuckolded into raising children that biologically are not theirs.

Just thought I would clarify.

um... kay. When i read it that morning on my crackberry, it was cockhold/cuckold or the like. Later, it was cockloft. Now, its not there at all. Apparently, there were too many snickers about it.

Oh please...

For the record... I went to Catholic grade school, high school, and college... so I'm not taking pot shots at somebody else's religion.

Besides... as St. Al McGuire once said, "If you can't poke a little fun at religion, you are taking life way too seriously."

Thanks for clarifying. That makes it all OK. Please continue your regularly scheduled Catholic bashing.

I'll make sure to say a special prayer this weekend to the Patron Saint of Political Correctness to ask for forgiveness.

Yay, Catholic Church! And welcome back to fold Bishop Williamson, you wacky Holocaust denier, you!

OK, let's not go down this road. Please stop the religion-bashing and what not.

Now, cockhold bashing, that's just fine.
