Letterman claims extortion, admits relations with staff members

Featured Replies

Well, this is a bit surprising.

David Letterman told his audience Thursday that he is the victim of an alleged extortion attempt and admitted to having sexual relations with several members of his staff, according to a press release from his production company.

Letterman made the announcement during taping of the "Late Show."

"This morning, I did something I've never done in my life," Letterman told his audience, according to a release from Worldwide Pants Inc. "I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury."

The 62-year-old funnyman said he received a package three weeks ago from a person who claimed to have information about Letterman's sexual dalliances, ultimately demanding $2 million to prevent public revelation.

Letterman said he went to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, which conducted an investigation, and an arrest was made earlier Thursday.

In his grand jury testimony, Letterman said, he revealed the relations with members of his staff.

"My response to that is, yes I have," he said. "Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people -- I need to certainly protect my family."

I have to admit, I am surprised, I thought he was gay.

No, but he married his long time partner with whom he fathered (presumably) a child.

Awww Dave, Dave, Dave. . .

If it becomes public which staffers he had affairs with it could either be very damaging for all involved, or it could become Dave's Edgiest Top Ten List Ever.

That's good because this might be the end of him on TV. It will be very interesting to see how CBS handles this because I think he is actually beating Conan in the ratings which gives him some equity. But this is not the type of thing employers like to hear.

I really doubt it's the end.

Article I saw in the Trib said the staffers were women.

keep it in your pants Dave

Not a chance. Unless something crazy is going on that we don't know about, this is a blip on the radar.

Does this mean all those people who Letterman ridiculed for being promiscuous, get to guest host for the next two weeks?

The irony is that Letterman would be making a field day out of this if the person had a D or R behind their name. Instead he feels sorry for himself.

I thought it was well known that Letterman liked his interns of the female nature

Sure, but you figure that's stuff you leave behind once you finally get married and start a family.

I think the relationship with the woman was one of occasional co-habitation for the last 20 years, I believe. He didn't marry her until very recently. He's been sleeping around for a while it seems.

Wasn't she a ton younger than him?
