December 8, 200916 yr There is a ton of talk about Edwin Jackson, with this amount of activity he almost has to moved. It sounds like the Diamondbacks want him pretty bad. I find this frightening. With even more rumors swirling tonight and plenty of non-denials and non-answers from Diamondbacks folks lately, we’re left thinking they’re making a very strong push for Detroit RHP Edwin Jackson. Last week, there was a report that said the sides had talked about a deal involving RHP Max Scherzer. We’re hearing tonight there might be something to that report. But a Jackson-for-Scherzer swap doesn’t make much sense for the Diamondbacks, does it? Scherzer has five years to go before free agency. Jackson’s a free agent in two. How much bigger might this trade be? Could there be another team involved? We’re not sure on these things and we’re not clear how long the Diamondbacks have been in pursuit. We were told that they haven’t made much progress on any trade front today, but that hasn’t stopped the rumors from persisting. Jackson has come into his own the past two seasons, first in 2008 when he threw 183 1/3 innings with a 4.42 ERA for Tampa Bay and then last season with Detroit, when he had a 3.62 ERA in 214 innings. Jackson is probably going to make something in the neighborhood of $5 million next year in arbitration. Scherzer’s salary is still under team control, so acquiring him would help the Tigers cut costs. You might remember that Jackson made his major league debut against the Diamondbacks as a 20-year-old in 2003, tossing six innings and giving up one run in a win in Arizona. Scherzer has higher trade value than Edwin Jackson right now so that doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense. There was supposedly talk of a 3 team trade involving the Yankees and Curtis Granderson as well which is where Scherzer's name could have been brought up, with a prospect or another piece headed from New York to Arizona.

Trading Scherzer in this scenario would be an epic fail.
December 8, 200916 yr Edwin Jackson has very high appeal at this point. I don't know why the Tigers shouldn't trade him to get the most value, especially if they get Scherzer back.

December 8, 200916 yr The reports are Arizona would be getting Jackson and Ian Kennedy for Scherzer. I'd say that is pretty damn good value if you ask me. Tigers would be getting Scherzer, Austin Jackson, and more. Twitter updates indicate that the deal is not likely, but still a possibility.
