Good move. He provides something we have not had in awhile: a good player with versatility (Sorry Nix/Lillibridge lovers). He can play 3b, 2b, 1b and the corner OF, so this provides good insurance in case of injuries. I can't imagine it's more than $13 million combined, but I guess we'll see (he made $3.575 last year.)

3 yrs for 14 mil

Not bad really. If he settles into a position and hits for some Joe Crede-ish numbers, that is solid and cost certain.

Whatevs

He made 3.75 last year, so at 4.6 per year for this deal, I'd say the Sox did pretty well. I'd imagine he would have gotten a bigger raise in arbitration.

It's weird because the money is reasonable, and I'm no bigtime Nix-supporter.

But then when the Sox cry poor in 2010 free agency I'm going to wonder why this was done when you can just plug a backup-type in at 3b.

I dont want to do that, but I do if it means it's the only way we can later afford Boras clients (or guys of that level).

I like this deal. I think Teahen is good for 20hr and 80rbi, which is worth $5mil/year to me.

I highly doubt this contract would be the reason the Sox would cry poor, and I would rather Teahen be the backup type than Nix

The Sox got $1.5M from the Royals as an offset. So the yearly money is either this (if front-loading the cash):

$2.25M in 2010 (arb)

$4.75M in 2011 (arb)

$5.5M in 2012 (FA)

Or this (if spreading over time):

$3.25M in 2010 (arb)

$4.25M in 2011 (arb)

$5M in 2012 (FA)

Sox Agree to Three Year Deal With Teahen

SN Take:

Asst. GM Rick Hahn, who handles most of the Sox contract extensions, once again did an excellent job. He signed Teahen to a fair deal which avoids arbitration and buys out a year of free agency. The move provides the club with cost certainty at a position that is typically expensive to fill (3B).

SoxNet understands that some fans don't see Teahen as an answer at third. We are very aware of his pedestrian offensive numbers and his porous defensive metrics, but we also know that Teahen has the tools to be a league average, if not better, 3rd baseman.

Sox Brass is aware of it too and its why club had long scouted Teahen. Those close to the Sox have indicate the club believes Teahen needed a change of scenery and a definite position to reach that potential. 2010 will be the first year since 2006 where Teahen has a definite position. Coincidentally, 2006 was the best year of his career (.290 AVG, 18HR, .357 OBP, .874 OPS) and if the Sox get that type of production out of Teahen, they'll have a bargain for the next three seasons.

Is it $1.5M? Because I've seen $1M just about everywhere else.

Apparently he is set with the Sox for awhile then. I will be looking forward to seeing him nxt year at 3B and comparing him to my hero Joe Crede

Seriously?

You do realize he would have gotten a virtually identical amount, and possibly more, in arbitration anyways right?

He most definitely would have gotten more.

Well, it bought out arbitration. Not a bad move.

Agree. How good you are or are not doesn't matter a whole lot in arbitration. That's why all kinds of decent players get non-tendered every single year, because clubs don't want to be forced into paying them more than they're worth.

From the Trib.

But I don't know how they do the cash allocation over time.
