Cards offer 8 years $120+M to Holliday?

Holy Schnikes.

That's a huge contract offer if true.

The Cardinals have intensified discussions with the lead representative for free agent Matt Holliday and on Monday "tweaked" a standing offer they hope will allow them to retain the left fielder for at least eight seasons.

General manager John Mozeliak and agent Scott Boras revisited the framework of the Cardinals' lengthy proposal first tendered last Wednesday. Though both parties refuse to discuss details, the deal is worth around $16 million a season, making it easily the most lucrative deal ever offered by the Cardinals.

They are gonna be paying a lot of money to Pujols and Holliday for the next couple seasons if this contract is signed

No joke, you are looking at $35 to $40 million a year for two players.

In the NL Central with Wainwright and Carpenter though that should lock it up for a couple of years if LaRussa and Duncan hang around.

Wow is money flowing in odd places this year. The collusion scare must've gotten to a couple of owners.

Jesus Christ of Nazareth

it's one of those things where I imagine the Cards have to have a lot in place before Pujols even seriously talks extension with them.

Good for them. I think this is a necessary move. Signing Holliday is a big deal for them.

Local radio is saying the offer is 5 years.

I think one of the things they'd have to have in place is an idea of Pujols's extension demands, because the one thing that I wouldn't do in that franchise is to sign Holliday to a contract that would prevent me from meeting Albert's extension demands...or a contract that would have me paying big money to Holliday after I've had to trade Albert or let him walk.

While trading Pujols would indeed suck, imagine the haul you'd get.

If Pujols is demanding something like $30 million, the Yankees/Red Sox could legitimately give it to him and the Cardinals might not be able to

I've read a couple of things since that suggest the Cardinals camp is offering 5 years.

So, the 8-year "offer" is probably something that originated in the Boras camp... then got fed to the media.

you know what is f***ed up.......when talking about blockbuster deals, Alphonso Soriano is the ceiling......yikes
