Buehrle has tossed a no-hitter and a perfect game, Floyd flirted with two in the span of a couple of weeks in 2008, and Danks is a rising left-handed star.

 

The scary thing is they didnt even include Jake Peavy who could/should be the best of those 3.

I think whoever wrote that just had a brain fart and forgot that Peavy was a starting pitcher for the White Sox. But the funniest thing was captain cheeseburger's claim that the yankees will just have to sneak up on people, and that somehow their pitching doesn't get enough credit.

In a playoff series we actually could see Danks used as a reliever some.

naw i think they should go with a 4 man in the playoffs to keep everyone fresh. I would though set it up to where our 2 best pitchers whomever that turns out to be are pitching game one and 4.

The Sox have the best 1-4 in baseball... good chance of being better than 5.. Buehrle/Garcia/Garland/Contreras/Hernandez - Peavy/Buehrle/Danks/Floyd/Garcia.

They are changing the days off in the playoffs. The 3 man playoff rotation, unless there are rainouts or snowouts will be a thing of the past.

Fair enough. I thought you were talking about the Sox going to a 3 man rotation with Danks coming out of the pen. That wont happen.

Hard to say anything is "the key" to success in 2010, as its really the entire 25. But usually, you pick the area with the most possible/likely variance from a mean. To me, that isn't the starting pitching, which is likely to be very good. The "key" is the performance of the outfielders - Rios (can he get back to at least his career numbers?), Quentin (can he stay healthy for a full season?), and Pierre (can he really put up the .300 avg and .350 OBP he needs to be successful?). How they do, IMO, will be the difference between winning the division and not.

 

Man, I sure hope that our pitching staff is going to be as good as everyone thinks it will be. People are putting a LOT of faith in those 5 guys.

While I agree that the offense is the bigger "key", there are still questions to the rotation. Peavy still has adjusting to do, to be sure. There's also the issue of Dank's blisters and, more pressingly, Gavin's hip.

blisters and sore hips that were fine within days don't particularly concern me. There are always questions about everything, there are no guarantees. but again, the "key" is the area least predictable, least reliable, most variable in likely outcomes. The OF is king for that purpose here.

With either Floyd or Danks being the #4 option, the Sox have no reason to go to a three-man rotation anyway.

 

John Danks is a good fourth starter? Yeah think. He is probably the best fourth starter in baseball.

Of course i'd rather have a relatively problem free rotation and a lot of ifs on offense than the other way around so at least there is that.

We will have a DH come spring training and whoever it will be will put up decent offensive numbers. I expect a 25-30HR, 85-100 RBI type of guy via free agency and we will get him on the cheap. Who this guy will be, no one knows for sure just yet. If i had to bet, I would say Aubrey Huff. He had a down season last year but had a .900 OPS the year prior and is one guy who is flexible enough to start at DH, 1B,3B,or either Corner OF. I know we can all trash any available DH option for his downfalls, and each guy that we have discussed here(Thome,Delgado,Huff,Blalock, etc) all have them, but for what Ozzie wants to do this season, that type of position flexibility is a big thing IMO.

I think the Red Sox top 4 is better and the Mariners, Phillies, Cardinals and Giants are also in contention.
