January 19, 201016 yr So is he saying we should be suspect of his 1985 career best power numbers season at the age of 37?
January 19, 201016 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 05:36 PM) So is he saying we should be suspect of his 1985 career best power numbers season at the age of 37? His age 40, 41 and 42 seasons were actually the most productive baseball he played since his age 27-29 seasons.
January 20, 201016 yr I am surprised all of these retired veterans are commenting on Big Mac so freely; I understand they are being asked to comment, but most sure aren't exactly side-stepping it. It is painfully clear that a handful of guys were on something that the rest of the league wasn't using, or at the very least were using a "quantity" of something that wasn't embraced league wide. BUT I can't imagine there are that many Major Leaguers, that in my lifetime (28 years), were clean of ALL amphetamines, PEDS, banned substances etc. And at the VERY least, most of these guys weren't exactly preaching from a pulpit about all of the drug use that was going on during this period; Now in 2010 they seem to have found their voice. Lots of stones being cast by players that played or are playing in a glass ballpark.
January 20, 201016 yr Carlton Fisk has to be my LEAST favorite Sox of all time. To me, he comes across as a pompous, arrogant jerk. He's a good representative of the sox all right.... the RED SOX, which is the team that I'll always identify him with. Oh yeah, I went to high school with his son too, and he's a tool just like his old man...
January 20, 201016 yr I'm glad Fisk spoke out on this. He was a stud. As far as being a jerk, Chet, are you basing this on this article or insider knowledge? I never heard Fisk was a total dick.

Like the Deion Sanders incident - I'm no Deion Sanders fan, but I wish he would have punched Fisk right in his grill and told him to mind his own damn business and worry about his own teamates.
January 20, 201016 yr it makes me so f***ing pissed in these articles when someone mentions frank thomas as a roider. And yes, I'm confident it's cub fans trying to make a false-equivalence to Sosa, but it's still just so ridiculous. Thomas wasn't even a true power hitter int he 90s, and then when he started swinging for the fences HE TOLD US HE WASNT CONCERNED WITH BA ANYMORE EDIT: sorry, it was in the comments. January 20, 201016 yr I've also heard that Fisk is not very fan-friendly. Which is a real shame, because he was my favorite pre-Thomas Sox player.
January 20, 201016 yr Author QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 04:41 PM) His age 40, 41 and 42 seasons were actually the most productive baseball he played since his age 27-29 seasons. eh, look at his whole career with the Sox - his HR numbers would go up, the AVG would go down, then it would go vice versa. Looks like what most players do, they adjust. He went higher AVG in those years. Nothing in his career shouts PED's, where all his numbers across the board suddenly skyrocketed. Besides, the reason I love these quotes isn't because Fisk didn't do this stuff. I think he probably didn't, but he may have. Its that he's willing to speak honestly, instead of the B.S. we get from a lot of current players. He wasn't even talking about himself anyway. though I did detect a hint of jealousy. And this whole idea that "they all did it" is just silly. Just as silly as thinking none of them did. Some did, some didn't.
January 20, 201016 yr Author QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 11:58 PM) I've also heard that Fisk is not very fan-friendly. Which is a real shame, because he was my favorite pre-Thomas Sox player. My experience was otherwise, the couple times I met him. But its entirely possible he was a jerk at other times, I have no idea. I kind of liked that he was a jerk when necessary, like with that loser Neon Deion.

I just found it ironic that he talks about guys who have their best seasons at an old age, but he had his best season at a pretty old age, especially for someone who catches.
January 20, 201016 yr Author QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 08:18 AM) I know. I just found it ironic that he talks about guys who have their best seasons at an old age, but he had his best season at a pretty old age, especially for someone who catches. But he really didn't. His 1985 season was by far his best HR season - but his other numbers were worse than his averages. If he went from 26 to 37 HR, and his average also rose, and other numbers rose, then I'd be highly suspicious. Basically, as far as I can tell, he sacrificed AVG for power.

I guess it depends on how much respect you have for the game of baseball and the 100+ year traditions.

January 20, 201016 yr I met him once, briefly....more like I encountered him, but he seemed real nice and friendly. I don't get mad at him for going into the HOF as a Red Sox. He was from that area, came up through their organization and played his first ten or whatever years with them. Plus, his defining moment, that World Series homer came as a Red Sox. His quote to Neon Deion ("If you don't play it [the game] right, I'm going to kick your ass right here.") could be applied to McGwire and other roiders. For that alone, ya gotta love the guy.
January 20, 201016 yr QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 10:10 AM) His quote to Neon Deion ("If you don't play it [the game] right, I'm going to kick your ass right here.") could be applied to McGwire and other roiders. For that alone, ya gotta love the guy. Which is exactly why I wish Deion Sanders would have punched him right in the throat and knocked him on his arse. Did fisk invent the game? How can he tell someone on an opposing team that he's not playing the game "right"? what a pompous a-hole. Yeah... he forever belongs in a red sox uniform.

Deion was disgracing the game and the Yankee pinstripes. I hate the damn Yankees as much as anybody, but they do have a tradition of great baseball. I wish Fisk would have stomped him into a greasy spot.

January 20, 201016 yr QUOTE (YASNY @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Deion was disgracing the game and the Yankee pinstripes. I hate the damn Yankees as much as anybody, but they do have a tradition of great baseball. I wish Fisk would have stomped him into a greasy spot. I too hate the yanks, but fisk needed to mind his own team's business. How would you like if someone from the yanks said something about the way Beckham plays the game? If I were the yankees pitchers in that game, fisk would have gotten drilled until the benches cleared, then got his face caved in. Keep your nose out of other team's business. Yeah, he's a red sox.

And yet, you have an avatar of Brian Anderson getting all up in a Cubs player's business, even though neither were involved in the original problem. Was that Brian's business? Its pretty obvious this is just a personal bias thing for you, and that's fine. Just don't make it seem like its about how the game is played or something.

I had to look up the Sanders-Fisk incident, and I think you're f***ing crazy if you think Fisk was in the wrong there.
