Yeah, I can get 8 GB off Amazon for like $100-115. I am just wondering if you guys think it will really make much of a difference in my video editting or not. Being a college kid, being able to afford it means asking for it for Xmas.

 

Yes, memory makes a huge difference in video editing to a point. If you currently only have 4 gigs, doubling it will make video editing much faster/smoother. You have to remember that a large chunk of your current memory is already being used by the OS and other minor programs you may have running in the background. Having more than about 3 gigs also requires a 64 bit operating system, as part of that 4 gig barrier is taken up by gfx memory, too.

 

For others above, older memory tends to cost much more than newer memory, as it's not made in large quantities, if at all anymore. For example, modern 1333mhz+ memory will be way cheaper than older 600mhz memory chips.

There has to be an app you can download that will diagnose if its the memory. I use istat but im sure thats just mac. Memory gets eaten up by alot of stuff like webpages and video, so my first inclination is that you'll see a large improvement regardless.

I have 4 GB and a 32-bit operating system. So would it not be good to attach 8GB to a 32-bit system?

32-bit systems are gernally limited to 3-4GB of memory. There are ways to get around it depending on operating system and what processor you have.

It's probably cheaper to get a new machine and will certainly last you longer.

Pretty much this, also, your processor (and bios) has to support 64 bit systems in the first place. With the necessary upgrades you'd probably need, the previous poster is right, you'd probably be able to buy a newer machine with all of these things for less than the upgrades would cost.

 

My recommendation would be to just live with what you have for now, so doing stuff will take a bit longer than on another system, it won't kill you. Save up for a fully upgraded machine instead of wasting money upgrading this one.

I actually was eligible for a free upgrade when I bought my laptop, but I was too lazy to go through the process, and it expired at the end of the year. Oh well.

Yeah, I'll probably just deal with it until I graduate, then maybe get a new laptop then when I get a real job or something.

So my wife, me and my son were at Best Buy Sunday night just before they closed. We wanted to get a blu ray player for the bedroom, for you know, porn and such. We grab an LG that's on sale for $80. We get to the register and it rings up as $130. We say that it was on sale for $80, the cashier calls over the manager, my wife chases our son around and I go back to the shelf to see what the problem is. We grabbed the one with 3D capability instead of the $80 one. By the time I got back to the register, the cashier is telling me it was taken care of. So I just turned around and took the $80 one back to the shelf. So, we got a $130 blu ray player for $80 because they were about to close and the manager didn't care. We left quickly.

Youre going to love it! Ive had mine for a year and ive used it pretty much every day twice a day to make myself Iced Coffees in the morning and evening. I just recently tried the Gingerbread flavor with some pumpkin spice coffee creamer, yumzies!

My parents have the Cuisinart version, and I hate it. Not that I drink coffee at all, but they make hot chocolate cups and it was awful. Even tried regular GFS packets we have, and just used the thing for the hot water, and it still tasted funky. I think it's the standing water that is stored inside the unit for weeks on end that gives it that plastic taste or something. I just stick to heating up the water in the microwave or over the stove.

I understand that people like Keurig. I can't stand it.

 

I've started using those Chem-ex filters when I have time on the weekends. Coupled with dark matter coffee, damn good cup.

 

But, yep, can't stand Keurig.

 

Also, tried playing around with a surface. I had my mind open, really wanted to like it. But, it's lags were very distracting compared to when i've tried out the nexus and ipad tablets.

We use it frequently enough that the water isn't in there for more than a couple of days at most. I think our Keurig only holds 4 cups or so.

I live across the street from a starbucks and I am trying to get away from going there everyday. Made my first cup today, not bad so far. Definitely better than the single cup coffee maker I had before.

Mine did come with the my k-cup feature where I can still grind my coffee I guess. We'll see how much I like it after trying all the different kinds, its actually more for the future wife.

Most likely that will be in their coffee maker the Verissimo. Or the new Keurig Vue. Both have the steamed milk feature.
