MLB is investigating the incident according to ESPN. Not that it matters, umpires punishments and fines are never reported, so we will never know if anything happens.

He's a fat pig who seems jealous of the players. I CAN'T STAND umps and referees like him. Get your fat ass back in the corner and do your job. We didn't pay to see you. If you want to be a star, then so something worthy of being a star. Umps and refs have WAY too much power in sports. With technology today, I honestly believe that we can get rid of them all together, or reduce their role dramatically. I have no use for them.

Not mine. I wanna know if a guy is truly safe or not. I wanna know that a pitch really crossed the plate or not. Anything can still happen and the games will be decided fairly. Just like in basketball when they talk about "veteran calls". WTF? You mean to tell me that was a foul on Kobe Bryant and not a foul on some bench warmer?

 

Baseball isn't as bad as basketball, but you still see some things that are obviously wrong. I just don't like how umps force themselves into games like that.

I'd probably be in favor of robo-umps. Personally, I don't have much use for the non-talents who are only there as a necessary evil blowing calls and deciding games because they don't know how to get into position for a play at the plate, the whimsy created by the incompetence of umpires is lost on me.

I still think the umpires are needed, but yeah, some system like in tennis where you have a certain number of challenges you can use would be sort of interesting. I don't know what the technology is that they use to determine where exactly the ball landed, but one would think it could be applied to baseball on balls and strikes, balls hit down the lines, maybe even force plays at a base.

New plan: stuff Joe West's fatass down the well at DWH. Kills two birds with one stone.

Buehrle dropped his glove towards the umpire.. he showed aggression. Clearly, he could have seriously injured West with the glove.

Bah, that's a classic case of showing up the ump over a call. I think a lot of umpires would have tossed him for that. Very few would have called the balk.

It looks like he's finally starting to get some of the backlash he's deserved for years. Neyer also went off on him today and another AP story or two found ways to poke jabs at him. Neyer is fairly spot on with I think the proper way to think about an ump. I feel as though the best ump in the world should probably remain nameless until about 10 years in the game when people discuss the quality of his work and that's where the discussion should begin and end. You can agree about his rant from earlier this year, but he's got no right in voicing any personal opinion regarding the game he is paid to officiate. If he wants to use the union as a tool to get some of these opinions out there, then do that, just like every politician before you has done.

Some have mentioned this, but the ump situation has been out of control a long time. And it's impossible to correct it because of the umpire's power in baseball.

You can't tell me umps did not reinvent the strike zone. They continue to squeeze and not call the letter high strike. It is a f***ing disgrace and I've been convinced for years it is an umpire conspiracy to screw the people they are supposed to be working for and serving. They are working for themselves and with their own strike zone have flipped off baseball for years.

Nothing pisses me off more than seeing them squeeze pitchers game after game.

They definitely have not called the high strike in my lifetime.

 

But...I will say that I think the game-to-game consistency of calls around the corners has improved quite a bit in the last few years, now that the umps are being graded electronically.

Letter high strikes haven't been around for a long ass time and there's a good reason for that. It totally screws left handed hitters.

When the broadcast crew from the opposing team implies you messed up, that's pretty bad. Heard it from the White Sox site...they had Hawk and Stoney, then Ed and DJ, then the Cleveland crew. While they didn't say West was wrong, you could tell they were implying it was a bad call and West was trying to show Buehrle up.

Why does it work to not call a pitch just above the belt a strike?

Games take too long anyway. Hitters should be hacking.
