I haven't seen a ton of Freddy's games this year but I have seen his last couple starts and it looks like his pitches have zero zip on them and any breaking ball just hangs up there begging to be blistered.

 

Without burying a guy who has 10 wins ... is he done for the rest of the season? Is it just a period of dead arm? Would you sit him a start and have him throw a bullpen session the day of his next scheduled start to deduce whether his pitches remain horrible?

Is Freddy's arm dead? That's my question.

Freddy was never all that good to begin with.

 

When Freddy's good, he's tolerable and decent.

While chw42 brings up a good point, this is actually an interesting question. Will Freddy fall off the table because his body is no longer used to the full-season grind?

 

Including minor league games, he only pitched 97 innings last year. And that was the most that he'd pitched since 2006.

 

He's already at 119 innings this year.

This. I had to do a double take to make sure it was Greg who started the thread. Nice thread Greg. I remember the sox brass saying they are going to take it easy with Freddy with the innings pitched. People have to remember Freddy has not thrown this many innings in 4 years. He has already doubled his overall innings pitched from last season. Now this start was just an off night for Freddy, but in the future, I'm sure the sox will probably keep an eye on him more closely.

Having Edwin Jackson makes this quite tolerable. He's acting exactly like a 5th starter should now; keeps ya in the game most nights, but gets shelled sometimes. I think 1st half Freddy was the anomaly, and I suppose this is ok.

 

Look at what Baker did tonight. That guy was their ACE coming into the season. If we can just split with these Twinkies the rest of the year, we should be able to out-horse them.

I think that maybe teams have just figured out how to hit Freddy. That junk was only going to last for so long. Hopefully he'll get some rest and figure out another way to baffle hitters.

This. Freddy was brought on to be the 5th starter, and he is back in that role with EJax on board. Comparing to some of the 5th starters the Sox have had in recent history, Freddy has been great. Ouf of 21 starts, 4 times he was rocked and gave the Sox no chance to win. In all the other starts though, he kept it close and the Sox are 14-7 when he pitches. I'll take that.

Yesterday is the perfect example of why so many of us were concerned with Freddy in the long term for this season. I don't know how much gas is left in his tank. At the very least we now know who our starting 4 are if we make the playoffs.

Tired or dead arm is possible as most all pitchers say they go through it during the season. Freddie didn;'t have any movement on his pitches and they were all up and hit hard. I am still believing he will rebound. To say the guy was only tolerable this season is a statement that flies in the face of a ten game winner who kept us in this think early as the the others faltered. I still have confidence in Freddie unless Cooper and Guillen and Garcia all say his arm fell off or something

From what was said on The Club, the front office shares the same sentiment. And this is why I was fine with them foregoing a bat at the deadline and making an effort to replace Peavy instead.

 

Freddy is what he is... when he's not getting the calls on the corners, he's in big time trouble. I know this might be due to listening to Hawk, but Freddy wasn't getting some of the calls Scott Baker was last night. That makes a big difference.

It was easy to see why if you were watching. Everything Garcia threw hung. Curve balls should not come in down the middle of the plate belt high.

Yeah, I didn't see many of the early starts of Freddy so I don't know how soft he tossed. But the last couple starts? Wow. Makes me want to pick up a bat. His soft toss meatballs have been ridiculously tasty for hitters.

I hate when the word "ace" is used when you're actually talking about a team's "number 1" pitcher. That's off topic, I know...just felt like saying it.

For a 4th/5th starter, Freddy's doing pretty well. There haven't been all that many games that he's given us absolutely no chance of winning. I think it's a mental thing right now, he'll be back at it in a week.

He's pretty close to giving us an automatic L if he keeps soft tossing fastballs and hanging breaking balls. I think he should sit a start. Oh wait, we traded Hudson for Jackson instead of trading some lousy prospects for a guy who was a salary dump.

Well, at least he'll be going up against awful opposing starters in most cases. He's matched up against Armando Galarraga this Sunday, for instance. After that, he'll get to face a Royals scrub.
