No one wanted us to take Trout cause BA a few weeks earlier said he was a grinder in the Rowand mode.

The only reaction on this board to the Angels taking Trout was "hmph, the Angels sure like outfielders, don't they?" The majority in the draft thread seemed to want Rex Brothers, hard throwing lefty who went to Colorado a few picks later and has been in their minor league bullpens from day 1 of entering that org. Here's the thread. Not one person here complained about the Sox passing on Trout.

I must admit, I'm impressed here. I wouldn't have expected that anyone would have predicted a catastrophic leg injury for Mitchell early in 2010. Somehow you must have, because you're giving management **** over the fact that they didn't. I'd really love to read the post if you can point me to it.

Drafting football players like KW, Borchard, and Fields has provided this organization with such great talent, I could see why they went back to that well. As a H.S. OF'er no way KW was going to take him with the first pick. The organization looks for quick fixes (college) in the first round.

Quick fixes? You can't be serious. No one thought of Fields or Borchard as a quick fix. They were both projects from the day they were drafted, much like HS players.

I have no problem at all with the Mitchell pick (as you can tell by the thread).

On the subject of drafting football players, last year the Rockies took two. Kyle Parker, QB at Clemson, is tearing it up at Ashville (SAL); another guy, Russell Wilson, not so much.

While it's great for the Angels that Trout is demolishing minor league pitching right now, unless they plan to cash in early and trade him for proven talent, he's really not affecting their big league club in any significant way right now. While it's certainly good when a draft pick performs well in the minor leagues, until they trade him for proven talent or he begins producing on a mlb field, they haven't gained much. Brandon Wood, anyone? Dallas McPherson? Let's not start proclaiming anyone a winner until the draft picks actually start impacting the MLB team in some way.

I know this was something being discussed a few pages ago, but I'd just like to point out that every move in baseball is a crapshoot. Even if your picks fail, the amount you invest in him is much less than that of even a Teahen or Linebrink who "bust" quite frequently too. And, if we didn't want to break Selig's slot rules, we could at least try to redirect some of that money to signing players in Latin America etc. The idea, in my mind, is to strike a good balance between signing and re-signing major league talent versus drafting and developing minor league talent.

 

That being said, unless somebody was on record saying they wanted to pick Trout over some of the others available, they really can't say anything bad about the Mitchell pick. He's certainly the type of player you would want the Sox to pick instead of their old safe picks, and neither has proven anything at the major league level yet.

I like Beckham and Sale but everyone on Soxtalk could have come up with them. Poreda was used to get Peavy, but he's awful. Mitchell is a question mark at best. There's really nothing to get too excited about down on the farm right now.

 

I'm with you, I'm not sold on the current regime until they actually develop talent, but in their defense it does take time. If Jordan Danks panned out, it would be the type Laumann could put a feather in his cap, but the obvious selections, I'm not giving him all that much credit.
