July 7, 201114 yr Sorry FOR Soriano. OK, so here's the idea (not mine, but this guy's a baseball nut/stat geek/etc.) from a Cubs fan. Cubs trade Pena (who has value right now) to free up 1B. Then we swap Dunn for Soriano--yes, swapping one bad contract for another, but the idea is that Dunn can play 1B and Soriano can be a true designated hitter, which he is anyway. That puts an end to the failed Dunn-to-the-AL-and-DH-role experiment and he gets a fresh start back in his NL. Sox fans might get a kick out of stealing a Cub and a guy who has power but isn't putting up the dismal stats that Dunn is. That's the idea. Discuss. Just wanted to throw it out there. I will show him the responses. Edited July 7, 201114 yr by LVSoxFan
July 7, 201114 yr Pay almost 10 million more over the next 4 years to a guy who has already proven to suck for years for a guy who should be just having a down season/half season? No thanks
July 7, 201114 yr The biggest problem with this is we become even more righthanded of an offense that we already are.
July 7, 201114 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 02:16 PM) The biggest problem with this is we become even more righthanded of an offense that we already are. I don't eat crap made with lard.
July 7, 201114 yr QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) Puke. Sorianos contract is actually a worse investment. It is also running until 2014, whereas Dunn is 2015.
July 7, 201114 yr I don't know...if the Cubs kicked in cash to make it even money-wise, I think I would consider it. Doubt the Cubs would even touch that though. Dunn is having trouble making any contact. I don't think it has anything to do with him DHing or playing the field.
July 7, 201114 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 02:20 PM) It is also running until 2014, whereas Dunn is 2015. Dunn is a four year deal, ending in 2014.
July 7, 201114 yr QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 02:21 PM) Dunn is a four year deal, ending in 2014. Nevermind then. My brain is frying. If we aren't picking up years, I'm not interested.
July 7, 201114 yr At this point, I'd rather see Soriano in our lineup. But isn't the knock on him, that like Rios, he is lazy? At least Dunn appears to try. I wish Dunn would go away, though. He's really a terrible hitter and killing our chances in the three hole.
July 7, 201114 yr Author LOL. I thought I'd throw it out there. I'm not a Soriano fan. I'll put on the co-worker tomorrow and let him defend his idea against the objections here. Should be fun! Keep the responses coming.
July 7, 201114 yr I think it is interesting. You could use Soriano out in LF if you wanted or use him at 2B (assuming he could still play there). It isn't like 2B is that premium of a position anyway. Soriano gives you a little more speed as well. He would make you more right handed though and makes more money. I think I'd consider it more so if the Sox were able to expand the deal into being a our problem for your problem scenario with Fukodome, Zambrano, and Soriano coming over for Dunn and Rios. Sox would take on payroll up-front but would save money down the road. Would only make sense for the Cubs if they really wanted to unload the short-term money and liked Dunn and Rios chances. I have no idea if the Cubs would consider it and it is clearly pure fantasy given how much money would be involved.
July 7, 201114 yr No way. Only because half the purpose of Dunn was to have a power left handed hitter. Yes, he's had a bad year, but I'm willing to bet on him bouncing back over Soriano. Now if Soriano played 2B and batted lefty, then maybe.
July 7, 201114 yr Author Although I highly doubt the Cubs would deal Zambrano. Yeah, Dunn and Rios are our problem, but I don't think they consider Zambrano a problem. Plus, remember they're already going to have to trade Pena to free up first base. I almost would rather get rid of Rios because Dunn may be flailing, but I have no doubt he's TRYING. Rios? Bah. July 7, 201114 yr How is Soriano a "true DH", and why would he handle the move to DH any better than Dunn did? Both were pretty terrible fielders, and neither spent time as a full-time DH in their careers.
