A lot of people in the know agree: Unless something drastic happens, the international draft is happening in 2014. Tax stuff just a prelude.

 

It severely cripples teams like the Royals, Pirates, Jays, and Nationals. It's going to hurt them much more than teams like the Red Sox and Rangers. But otherwise yes, the teams in the middle will benefit from this.

It does not cripple them in any way. It doesn't make it more difficult for them to sign players, it actually makes it easier for them to sign players they draft early in the first round. There's no more "Does Stras need $50 million" to worry about.

Minor league deals only? Terrible.

Again, this avoids the "We're going to call you up and start your arbitration clock immediately" clause that screwed the Tigers over on Andrew Miller. Put the guy on a minor league deal, give him his bonus, and if he's ready to be called up on day 1, call him up for that reason, not money.

Another sidelight to the labor deal: Most draft picks can't be traded. But picks lost by teams for violating new draft rules CAN be traded.

 

JR is doing the polka at Bud's house Thanksgiving night! The Sox spent $2.786,300 on draft picks this past summer, according to Baseball America - lowest among the majors' 30 teams. They also spent a major league-low $18,327,450 on amateur bonuses from 2007-11, according to Baseball America. Hard to build a farm system with investment in minor league system that bad, it is like trying to eat corn on the cob with no f'n teeth!

This isn't hard to grasp. The Royals/Pirates etc haven't had trouble signing players they pick in the 1st round. They have been opening their wallets for tons of players seeking over-slot throughout the entire draft, despite the round. This is why they have been leading baseball in overslot bonuses these last few years. These teams have chosen to build from within, as they need to, and have spent accordingly. These teams take advantage of those that are too cheap or too stupid to invest in amateur talent that might cost a premium. The CBA effectively ends this practice by essentially allowing any team to select said talent as prices are now largely restricted with this over cap tax. I can't fathom that people think this is good for said teams. The overwhelming consensus is that this is terrible for them. This isn't just some random whim here. It's astounding that people think otherwise.

Starting in 2016, teams from the top 15 markets no longer will receive revenue sharing. Today, would affect Washington, Toronto and Houston.

 

MLB has a formula to define market size. Includes population, TV market, revenue and other factors. Eg: Despite Bay Area, Oakland small mkt.

Those tweets "know how this team has a great farm, that's now ILLEGAL" oh boo hoo. The system is changing. You know those examples of those awful teams picking bad players for signability? Probably will be less of those. Plus by discouraging high school players now, these worse teams can get talent closer to the MLB in the draft. Yes, these teams were finding good value in the OLD system, but was the OLD system perfect? I don't think so. Just because people say X is better than Y doesn't make it so. Spend money getting great draft evaluators...the new value.

Good points. It did sound pretty bitter from guys who were probably a bit more biased because of their paychecks.

Hooray for the 'cash cow' that is college baseball. The new draft restrictions are pretty pathetic. But hey, I guess this helps the Sox. Now more teams will be forced to be as cheap as they've been for the last 10 years.
