BOSTON — The White Sox actually could be nearly full strength as soon as Monday night when they return home to open a three-game series against the Twins.

Reliever Jesse Crain, who hasn't pitched since June 23 because of a right shoulder strain, could be activated without a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Crain, 31, estimated he was at about 90 to 95 percent while pitching off a mound with batters standing in the box.

"I want to get a little sharper with my slider," Crain said. "But with the curveball, fastball, changeup, I felt good."

The Sox, with six rookie relievers, would welcome Crain's experience.

Gavin Floyd, who was placed on the disabled list Tuesday retroactive to July 8, believes he could be ready to return Monday night to start the series opener.

The Sox took the precautionary measure of placing Floyd on the DL and promoted rookie left-hander Pedro Hernandez to start Wednesday night. Hernandez, 23, who will make his major league debut, is 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA at Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham.

Hernandez was acquired from the Padres last winter with pitcher Simon Castro for slugger Carlos Quentin.

For his part, Floyd sounded optimistic he would miss only one start and plans to throw a bullpen session Friday to test his right elbow.

"These days off are going to be pretty important for calming things down," said Floyd, who hasn't pitched since July 7. "I haven't picked up a ball in a couple of days. I don't know how it feels throwing a ball, but I've been (receiving) treatment and just trying to give it some time to cool down."

Crain feeling stronger, nears return to bullpen

July 17, 2012, 5:45 pm

White Sox manager Robin Ventura talks about the pitching stuff and says the rookies need to grow up quick due to all the injuries the team has had - 7/16

DAN HAYES

BOSTON -- The White Sox could soon add a veteran arm to the bullpen without having to make a trade.

Jesse Crain said he felt even stronger on Tuesday afternoon after he pitched in a simulated game than he did during Sunday’s bullpen session.

The right-hander, who is on the disabled list retroactive to June 24 with a right shoulder strain, thinks he could be ready for game action as soon as Sunday.

Now Crain will wait to see whether or not he begins a rehab assignment on Thursday or instead pitches another simulated game against his teammates.

Either way, White Sox manager Robin Ventura and pitching coach Don Cooper could have another experienced arm beyond Matt Thornton in the ‘pen as soon as this weekend.

“Adding a quality reliever to anybody’s bullpen certainly is a boost,” Cooper said. “We are looking for him to provide that boost. He had a simulated game. It went well. We are going to talk about it and figure out what and where we are going to do with it on Thursday and then we will see where he’s at and see if we can put him right back and hopefully it all works out Saturday. But we take it a day at a time because if he has a setback, we’ll have to re-evaluate and come up with a new plan.”

The plan called for Crain to throw 28 pitches on Tuesday and the right-hander said it went well. Crain, who entered this season with a 3.30 ERA in 443 career appearances, has 2.38 ERA in 24 games this season. He is pleased with how his rehab has gone thus far and only thinks he needs a little more fine tuning before he’s ready.

“(Tuesday) I even felt stronger,” Crain said. “I didn’t get as fatigued at the end. That’s a good thing, I think. It’s just getting stronger. Tomorrow give it a little rest again. If I do it again on Thursday, hopefully it’ll be that final 5-to-10 percent. Everything was great. I just want to get a little sharper on my slider.”

Ventura is looking at the possibility of adding Crain and Gavin Floyd back into the mix on Sunday and Monday. Combined with the addition of Philip Humber on Tuesday, Ventura’s pitching staff would be loaded with experience compared with the current group.

“We could be (close to full strength),” Ventura said. “Hopefully. Then Johnny (Danks) would be the only one we’re still waiting on. It would be nice to start getting guys back in familiar roles.”

I can't believe I'm anxious to get Crainwreck back.

I think this should stabilize the bullpen a bit. Nate Jones can go back to pitching the 6th and 7th innings now.

The way Jones has pitched for the last month or so you have to wonder why he wasn't sent down instead of Martinez. I think it's because he's one of the guys they're looking to deal.

I like Jones but if a team overvalues him, I'm cool with using him to upgrade another area, most likely the rotation. I could see some teams viewing him as a future closer.

So what about Barnum

Coming back: First baseman Keon Barnum, the Sox's second pick in the June amateur draft, is expected to resume playing for Advanced Rookie-Bristol this week. Barnum, who batted .421 with three home runs and seven RBIs in five games, is recovering from a sore left shoulder.

I think it's a back-handed slap at our two great acquisitions (for the priceless right for the Marlins to negotiate with Ozzie) by KW.

Who knows?

He only pitched one time. He looked to have a live arm, questionable control and suspect breaking stuff. Kind of like half our bullpen from game to game.

Good news. Hopefully this is not a lingering problem and he continues to mash the ball down on the farm.

Things have got to be getting lonely on that Nate Jones bandwagon.

97mph fastball only gets ya so far. Used to consider Nate untouchable but if some team falls in love with, He Gone!

You do know it doesn't have to be an extreme thing, right? He can feel that Jones is a better option than Marinez, without having to be "on that Nate Jones bandwagon".

I should have used a smiley, but I wasn't trolling anyone when I said I am surprised Jones is still on the roster. He's been really bad.

With the injuries on this team, and the guys that area already here, there is really no choice.

Floyd threw on the side, and is expected back Monday.

It's time for a 5-man rotation for the rest of the season.

Peavy

Sale

Humber

Floyd

Quintana

If a trade replaces Floyd, and Danks replaces Humber, that's good. But we need Peavy, Sale, and Quintana pitching 3 of every 5 games the last 70.

Floyd had an encouraging side session today, cooper said. Monday start possible. To be discussed.

Floyd: "I'm ready to go."

Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN

Sounds like Gavin Floyd's bullpen went well. Threw all four of his pitches. Decision on Monday still undetermined at this point. #WhiteSox

1 Peavy

2 Sale

3 Quintana

4 Floyd

5 Humber

Bullpen

6 Myers

7 Reed

8 Thornton

9 Santiago

10 Jones

11 Axelrod

12 Septimo?

Omogrosso and Veal back to minors?

Personally, I like Veal more than Septimo, but I'm not sure the White Sox do.
