sunofgold
Before todays start Home ERA 1.74 .188 BAA Away ERA 4.01 .257 BAA Looking at the schedule, this could Sales starting schedule this way 9/13 Thursday home against Tigers skip the road trip (9 game trip)...basically skipping him a start 9/24 home against Indians (first game of series) 9/29 home against Rays (third of four game series) skip the three games series away against Indians ready for potential tiebreaker game or hopefully playoffs Really just skipping him one start which has been suggested by many here. This might not be a bad idea. He could use some rest for the last two weeks of the season.

BlackBetsy
Great! Who is our winningest pitcher on the road? Oh....Chris Sale. 7 wins on the road in the most. Second most wins is Phil Humber. Should we throw him out there in Sale's place?
sunofgold
It is just a way to get Sale some extra rest. And it would also put him in position to start a potential tiebreaker game or hopefully game 1 or 2 of a playoff series. Floyd or Axelrod could fill in for the start missed on the road which I believe would occur during the KC series.
caulfield12
It's a good idea statistically, but will never be adopted. If they had the choice between skipping a start at home versus on the road, it would be pretty clear cut where he prefers to start, though. They seem fairly flexible On when they start him. I hope that they are At least thinking about it. They probably are.

Statistically, who do you start in place of Sale on the road? It's a good idea relative to Sale's performance at home, but not a good idea relative to the REST of the potential starters. Sale needs to be 19-20 wins for the Sox to make the playoffs. There are 24 games left - he's got 4-5 more starts lefts, and the Sox need to win 4 of those games. If that is the case, Nate Jones should get some starts since he is 7-0. 1.000 winning percentage. He cannot lose.

BlackBetsy
QUOTE (sunofgold @ Sep 8, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) You must be a big fan of the win stat. If that is the case, Nate Jones should get some starts since he is 7-0. 1.000 winning percentage. He cannot lose. I'm a fan of all stats. Wins are just one of them. Four guys who have started with a lower ERA on the road: Axelrod (2.54 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) - only 4 starts Peavy (3.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) Quintana (3.55 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) Liriano (3.80 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) - only 4 starts So, no one has more wins than Sale on the road and only two guys - Axelrod and Peavy - have better WHIPs on the road. Not sure anyone can have a lot of confidence in Axelrod - it's been shown that his second appearance against teams is usually bad. Quintana and Liriano are melting down. I agree that Sale hasn't been as good on the road as he has been at home. But he's better than every replacement option.
sunofgold
Could give Sale a few more days offs and pitch him Monday. Don't think TieDyer will hold Zoolander back.
