The kid in the blue jacket is a middle-distance runner at Revere High School. Last week he ran the two-mile in 11:20. Here he is, training either for global jihad or a track meet:

Yeah easy today for you guys to be cracking jokes.

But where was everyone with this cautious approach yesterday.

/shrugs

Overall completely shameful and its not just the news. Its the people who read this garbage and parade around like it means something. Its the people who link to nonsense 4chan sites like they are more than modern day lynch mobs.

We all are to blame for this. We all help perpetrate the fraud that the media has become.

Recklessness for no reason. These are peoples lives and they just get thrown around like nothing.

I've been b****ing about the NY Post, s***ty media coverage and the stupidity of this "internet sleuthing" from the beginning. I even specifically said it'd likely lead to exactly what it has lead to.

If you dont think it applies to, why are you responding?

I didnt call anyone specifically out, and actually said "we", which would include myself, even though I explicitly posted that the logic was faulty and that their own visual evidence did not support their claim.

But I still bear responsibility, because instead of eviscerating people yesterday, I just didnt get that involved.

because you made a general post criticizing people making jokes immediately after a post in which I made a joke?

@RBecklerPSU

Wow. Some people on 4chan are compiling photos of possible Boston bomb suspects. Solid, very compelling work here. http://bit.ly/XGI25h

yeah, I'm going to say that's a really terrible idea and is going to lead to a lot of people, victims actually, having their lives picked apart by random internet morons. The "Saudi Suspect" has already had his name and personal information go through the wringer.

Right it was a general reaction to the fact that people are now clowning NY Post, even though for the 24 hours theyve been running around acting like its canon.

If that doesnt describe you, why are you responding?

Do you really need me to post, "You guys, except for Strangesox" or is it generally implicit that if you werent doing it, it doesnt apply to you?

Seriously what are you trying to prove Strangesox?

No where in my post do I make any indication Im speaking to you. You just happened to post before me.

But honestly Im now starting to think "the lady doth protest too much".

he wants you to point out his posts and praise him. then wag your finger at everyone else. perhaps reminiscent of his elementary school days. StrangeSox at the head of the class again!

The internet is not to blame here. They had actually cleared these two. Then last night a Boston tv channel inexplicably ran their photos and claimed they were suspects. CNN essentially confirmed the report. Then the ny post did their cover.

No they are both to blame.

The internet users for thinking that they are super sleuths and running nonsense pictures with circles as "evidence".

The news is to blame for reacting to what dumb people on the internet do and feeling the pressure to "keep pace" so that they arent being scooped.

The reality is that WE are to blame for constantly wanting to rush to conclusions, being impatient about results and living in a society where we need to know everything yesterday.

Sure its all fun and games when its rumors about trades, sports, things that dont matter. But when its real life, when its people being accused of terrorism, people need to use some goddamn sense and think about what they are doing.

Rumor mongering has real results.

Eh, the labeling matters, but otherwise they were people of interest to the FBI with potential information, something the FBI had publicly requested. It wasnt until the media labeled them as suspects that it became a real problem.

Did ANYONE on this board think that the NY Post was EVER correct about any reports?

No it becomes a problem when you have people parroting nonsense and saying "solid, very compelling work."

It was crappy bulls*** work. If they want to be helpful, send the pictures to the authorities. Maybe even write your conclusions and say "These guys look suspicious for X, Y, Z reason."

But the purpose wasnt to help. The purpose was to drive traffic to their website so that they could make money. Yet people dont get that.

I agree with that, but at that point it is on the media. The stories are not initially created to drive traffic. They are created by anonymous users at places like 4chan and Reddit. These users presumably have no financial interests in the sites they post on. But then the story's get lifted from there for the reasons stated and the labeling begins.

Cnn reporting again that these kids were indeed the FBIs people of interest.

Hey man, the FBI specifically asked for the public's assistance and people honored the request. Every tip from the pubic isn't going to be accurate. As far eviscerating posters, you would have lost, I would have simply kited' you.

Good post.

So they leaked a pic of the main suspect. He looks very, very young. But it is grainy
