Updated 11:21 p.m.: MIT issued an emergency alert at 10:48 on Thursday night reporting shots fired on the university campus. MIT's school newspaper, The Tech, reports, "Shots fired near 32 Vassar St (Stata Center), police officer down. Please stay inside." That report is backed up by CBS News's Bonney Kapp who reports hearing "officer down" on the police scanner just before the MIT alert went out. The Tech followed up a few minutes later, reporting that the injured officer was from MIT Police and was being taken to Mass. General Hospital. For now, details are scarce, but the suspect is on the loose and considered armed and extremely dangerous.

haha it's not ridiculous man. the types of people who commit crimes like this do it because they want to have power in their lives. more than that, they want to "mean" something, and be "remembered". when the news shows the types of images it has this week ad nauseum, it just shows other crazies that this is the way to find that meaning. it gives them what they want and adds fuel to the fire.

I'm talking about balance, and ditching the sensationalism.

 

a few years back you NEVER would have seen this picture on a website. it would not have been allowed to be shown. fast forward to 2013, and this was on CNN's front page all day Monday:

 

By withholding their 15 minutes of fame, can you prevent the Hinckleys and James Holmeses and Timothy McVeigh's and David Koreshes?

 

How can you do that in country that believes so strongly in freedom of the press, and where there will always be an overpowering interest in knowing the who and why in these situations?

 

We can get carried away blaming movies and video games for real life violence, but there are links to be made...just like it's pretty clear these types of shootings and terrorist events come in bunches, usually.

 

As a fan of the two NCIS shows, it seems that "real life" is no longer distinguishable from the plot of a t.v. show. It used to be that crime shows inspired copycats...now, they just reflect the reality of the random chaos and violence which has become a party of everyday existence since 9/11.

 

It's the same argument about memorials/monuments, Freedom Tower, etc. There is a very memorable and poignant memorial in Bali to the nightclub bombing victims...some would argue that building these things only glorifies the perpetrators of violence, whereas the opposite argument is that non celebrating and memorializing the victims and stressing what they contributed to the world is giving those who sow violence even more power than ever.

maybe. from the dawn of free press through the 80s, how many terrorist attacks or assassinations, etc, happened on American soil?

 

two assassinations, and .......... how many bombings/mass shootings/etc? I can't think of any.

 

now they happen every other week since the invention of the 24 hour news cycle and the sensationalist media. kids have been playing toy soldier since the dawn of time. whether that's with sticks or video game controllers, i'm not convinced THAT'S what causes anything, and science supports me on that. the news media, on the other hand? the glory it gives these kids? makes sense to me.
