None of these are good options. When the Sox start dealing players, you use players from within the system. No need to pick up retreads who will not do anything towards the future
July 5, 201312 yr Author QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:54 AM) None of these are good options. When the Sox start dealing players, you use players from within the system. No need to pick up retreads who will not do anything towards the future And yet we have to field a competitive team next year, to an extent, with some experienced veterans (hopefully who have experience playing in "winning" organizations) sprinkled in here and there. Having a veteran back-up for Flowers or Phegley (assuming they don't go after McCann) is advisable.
July 5, 201312 yr Olivo, Shoppach, and Francouer are going to make you worse, not better. If you pick up veterans, you pick up guys like McCann, Morales, Granderson, whoever. Guys that don't f***ing suck

If that was the case, we'd sign McCann, Utley, Morales and Granderson and be instantly competitive again next year. I was trying to anticipate what was more likely to happen...not what I would do, because, once again, that's not usually how the White Sox operate, with the exception of the Dunn free agency signing. And, that was a single player, not 3-4 in total. Edited July 5, 201312 yr by caulfield12
July 5, 201312 yr QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:26 AM) And yet we have to field a competitive team next year, to an extent, with some experienced veterans (hopefully who have experience playing in "winning" organizations) sprinkled in here and there. Having a veteran back-up for Flowers or Phegley (assuming they don't go after McCann) is advisable. They'll worry about a veteran back-up late in the offseason and pick up someone cheap. And that's only if they think the Flowers/Phegley combo is totally incompetent. If you aren't going balls out to win, you need your young guys to play so they can turn into Major Leaguers. Giving Olivo a ton of playing time does nothing but make you bad now and stop you from improving.
July 5, 201312 yr The Sox aren't going to add a veteran catcher. In the position they are in now is when they need to take their lumps to see if they have a starting catcher in the mix.

I never said I wanted him (Olivo/Shoppach) to play more than once every ten days. Just that it would be MUCH better to have an experienced tutor/mentor in that position than someone like Gimenez, who was never part of the long-term plan in the first place. Someone to show some leadership, who other players will listen to, a professional...because the coaching staff alone doesn't seem to be fixing all these defensive problems, so they need to look at other alternatives, SUCH AS having a "player/coach" in the Sandy Alomar, Jr., tradition as the back-up. I don't think they want to platoon Tyler and Josh. One player should be the clear starter (for the time being, Phegley), and the other should be getting everyday at-bats in Charlotte. Continuing to develop these two and seeing who can be a starter for them going into the future, if either can, is the proper thing to do. They know that both of them can hit the pitching at AAA. Let them play an equal share going forward.

I can just anticipate all the Phegley fans saying he never really had an extended shot at everyday play because he was alternating with Tyler and never was able to get into an offensive rhythm.

That is exactly the reason he walked out on the Marlins. And thinking about it further, Olivo should not be on any team with the way he handled that(walking out on the Marlines due to decreased playing time). That is bush league

That is bush league I just want to hear Harrelson with the call when he throws someone out at 2B on a steal, lol. Fine, then Kelly Shoppach, from everything I've read, he's very well liked and respected around the league.
