September 3, 201312 yr Stone Pony just mentioned that Johnson will be matched up vs CC tomorrow. Pretty anxious to see how he looks. Also Semien was named Southern League MVP in just 105 games.
September 4, 201312 yr QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 08:42 PM) Not the biggest fan of him debuting at Yankee Stadium against Sabathia. If this was a pennant race I'd buy that. Since we're not in it, lets see what kind of cojones he has.
September 4, 201312 yr QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) lmao they snubbed Hector. Rested*

September 4, 201312 yr QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) Rested* Hector wants to pitch tomorrow. The broseph is from the area, he has to feel snubbed.
September 4, 201312 yr QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) lmao they snubbed Hector. He's probably still trying to get out of the first inning...
September 4, 201312 yr QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 11:33 PM) Hector wants to pitch tomorrow. The broseph is from the area, he has to feel snubbed. I'm sure he is going to want to start the rest of the way. It's just not smart to cater to what players want though. He threw 85 innings last year, and while that is fewer than the 127.1 he threw in 2011 (by a lot), it's just smarter to limit him if you can. Get him, say, 3 or maybe 4 more starts the rest of the way and he should end up around 150-155 on the year, which is a perfect stepping stone into next year. In the meantime, you let him know that he can spend time with family and friends this weekend and not to worry about starting a game, just to be at the stadium at 11 or 1 or whenever. He'll have plenty of starts in the New York area over the next 10 years or so.

Cooper really layed into him publicly after that last start. Considering Santiago seems like a really good guy, I was kind of surprised. There seems to be something more there than meets the eye. Cooper seems to really not like his style for some reason, and it isn't like he is the first guy to have issues with throwing strikes.

I think it is an issue for not only Hector but a couple of our younger guys plus the catcher. They don't go after the hitter. The don't use their best pitch to blow the hitter out after getting two strikes. They nibble and try to be too cute. To many walks are given up. Last night for example with Nate Jones. He had a NY hitter on 2 strikes and instead of coming back with that 100 MPH heater he tries to be tricky and loses. Stone and Hawk were lamenting the pitch selection also

Stone and Hawk were lamenting the pitch selection also Because Nate Jones's best pitch is his slider. So, if he went up 0-2, threw his slider, and the batter got a hit, then I have no problem wit it.

It drifted back over the middle of the plate and Soriano didn't miss it.

It drifted back over the middle of the plate and Soriano didn't miss it. Then it was a problem of being reptitive and missing a spot, not necessarily in pitch selection itself. Also worth mentioning is that Soriano, throughout his career, has always been a fastball hitter and, other than really just this year, has never had any success hitting the slider. Criticizing Jones for that pitch is probably wrong, but criticizing location is justifiable.

Speed his bat up again and then set up to come back with the slider again if he lays off the fastball.

Speed his bat up again and then set up to come back with the slider again if he lays off the fastball. A slider low and away is just fine too, because then you come back with a fastball on the 4th pitch up, and he's not going to catch it and it's going to look like a hanging slider anyways, until it doesn't slide. It's kind of a moot point. You can't leave pitches in the middle of the plate to good hitters, no matter what pitch is used.

He needed to come back with that 100 MPH heat
