He was someone I wanted the Sox to pick up on the cheap, and then try and flip at the deadline. I can't believe he only got a minor league offer.

In 2012, Scott Baker threw 0.1 innings in the minors for the Twins. In 2013, he threw 44.2 innings for the Cubs.

He's a huge injury risk who will need to re-prove himself capable and durable on the mound. It's a nice, no-risk move, but anything more than a minor league contract with a decent MLB salary if he makes the roster with incentives would have been reprehensible.

Royals re-sign Chen. We're so f***ed.

I was definitely thinking of Scott Feldman, not Baker, whom the Astros already signed for 3 yrs/$30M last month apparently. That makes a lot more sense than Feldman getting only a minor league deal.

Scott Feldman signing all over again. It's a strategy I wish this organization would employ. They turned Feldman in to Jake Arrieta, Pedro Strop, and international bonus $$$.

We signed Felipe Paulino -- and for $1.75 million plus a $4 million team option, both reducing our risk if he's no good and drastically increasing our reward if he is.

Anyway, we don't fill our pitching staff with has-beens every year because our system actually produces pitchers worth giving MLB innings.

Which we turn into players like Eaton and Davidson.

Am I the only one who absolutely loves this signing more and more everyday?

After looking at his stats over his last 2 years as a starter I really love it as well(as long as he bounces back).

The stat got lost in the Dunn thread, but sans 1 bad game Paulino has a 3.40 era over his last 150 innings as a starter.

You need to look at the totality of the flipping process they've employed. They missed on a lot and spent a lot of money. And it only works if you DON'T have 5 guys that you want/need to give MLB innings to. With Paulino apparently healthy, we definitely do. In a situation where you might be forced to start an Axelrod-level type (Grimm, Raley, Rusin, Hendricks, ?), it makes a lot more sense for player and team.

Would rather get another look at Rienzo when we need a 6th.

I am also excited about him. Something clicked for him when he got to KC. Let's hope he's back to that level, and gets a boost from Coop's tutelage. Could be the bargain of the offseason.

Nope, I'm stoked on the potential Paulino brings as well. When Hanh stated he has the potential to be a solid number three to top of the rotation guy, he wasn't overstating things.

You're right. If Paulino can be fixed, he could be a July trade candidate for us to flip for a couple 'spects.

...or a guy we'll want to keep and flip a year later while still getting great value, even at the $4M '15 option. Or even a guy we'll want to extend at a reasonable rate if he has a role on contending future teams.

Nice thing is we have that option - we can time it to the development curve of other pitchers if we like internal guys better. If it works out, could be a terrific signing, and contract structure. Much better than the needs-to-be-flippable-by-July-or-we-eat-$6M strategy employed on the other side of town, imo.

I'm not a fan of Didi at all. He is just another Jose Iglesias, but not as good defensively. I'm just surprised that they were so jacked about getting him, said he is the SS of the future, and then after no rumors they suddenly are trying to trade him.

Anybody else think this Freeman deal is a little steep? He still has 3 arb years left. I'm really surprised that they didn't wait at least one more year to see if the 2013 Freddie Freeman was the real Freddie Freeman. It just seems like a lot of money to guarantee a player that young after one good year.
