I guess I am mildly surprised, though as saw with Fraisor, it doesn't mean he will be here next year for sure.

I would have been surprised earlier in the season but he had a nice year and seemed to fit well into the pen.

He is the perfect candidate to trade near the deadline for a couple of prospects like we did w/ Frasor. And Frasor brought back Myles Jaye if I recall correctly.

Might as well. Decent veteran reliever, provide some stability around the young guys, maybe you can move him at the deadline. Not too expensive.

$3.5m = less than one WAR on the open market. No brainer to me.

I don't think this is evidence of anything other than wanting some sort of veteran presence in the bullpen as well as returning good value.

I think Linstrom is a luxury more than anything else. $3.5m for a glorified one-out righty guy is a lot for a team rebuilding.

It's really not, considering just based on the number of right handed hitters in the game. If the team struggles, he can also be dealt at the deadline for a piece as well.

He was according to FanGraphs the 25th most valuable reliever last year and worth $5M when we are paying $3.5M. I know those stats are not a be all end all, but it gives you a decent starting point. Also, even if you are rebuilding you need arms to throw and who knows he could have a year like Jesse Crain and if we suck again we can maybe trade him for a body or 2. Look at what the Cubs do. They sign middle of the pack FA's and try to trade them to get more minor league bodies. The White Sox are not the Marlins, they are not going to have a team of all young players.

I don't think that's true at all. You can't get a veteran player that's decent at what he does for any less than that. And our bullpen has almost NO veterans.

Where do you come up with this stuff ? Lindstrom pitched more innings than he had in 6 years. "One out righty guy" is far from how he was used.

First off, we're not rebuilding. Second, you should be willing to pay a slight premium in terms of salary for not having to take on any long-term risk. I'll take Lindstrom at $3.5M for 2014 rather go out and sign a similar free agent to a multi-year deal.
