Rule 5 decisions coming soon

The catcher makes too much sense. Add to the spring training battle and if Flowers/Phegley/new acquisition beats him out, you just send him back. If not, you move the goalposts a bit at least by giving a different young guy a shot.

Something tells me we will end up with 1 of the power arms that throw 95+. Wouldn't hurt to see if a guy can develop on the fly into a hard throwing late inning guy. Not like they can be worse than guys like Axelrod or Leesman

We only have one open spot on the 40 man roster.

Looking at the rule 5 results on wiki, it is a longshot any of these guys is worth a damn, but risking $50k to find out is worth finding out.

Catcher or lefty reliever.

Catcher or lefty reliever.

They can always clear spots out later if they want, but it makes sense to have your 40 man roster full or at 39 when the Rule 5 happens to protect as many as you can and leave yourself an opening if you want to pick someone up. If they want to sign someone later, they can find people to drop.

If they pick up Perez, they would conceivably then need to DFA Flowers opening up another spot.

The roster as far as the Rule 5 draft is locked as of 11pm last night. You can make changes, but it doesn't affect your roster numbers as they pertain to the draft.

Or they could non-tender him coming up on December 2. Or other players.

I have no problem with Perez. He's a young, cost controlled catcher with apparently good fundamentals. He's not special, but he could be a league average catcher for a while. That's good value.

For a lefty reliever? With the sheer number of lefties that throw hard in the minors and the free agent market, I'd much rather the Sox ignore lefties unless they guy they bring has some kind of special arm. Otherwise, it's a total waste of a roster spot. Once the Rule V is over, they can just trade for the guy if they want.
