Too bad no pitch velo on MiLB Gamedays.

Davidson is a concern.

Davidson can't handle Zach Stewart

Nice first inning for W-Salem and Hawkins/Anderson!

Winston Salem hung an 8 spot in the bottom of the first, Anderson with a 2-run HR and Hawkins with a 3-run shot.

You see this a lot when guys are sent down that shouldn't be. Competition loses its edge. He'll have to get refocused and realize even if he might not have had more to prove a few months ago, he does now

Beck with another disappointing start. Just seems like he gives up far too many hits considering how few strikeouts he gets.

3 errors for Beckham tonight...there goes his Gold Glove Award

Beckham homer

Jeez, Chris Beck

Yep. Not going to be doing much if he doesn't start missing some bats.

He is incredibly overrated. If he doesn't improve upon last year's K/9IP ratio, his future lies in the pen.

K/9 of 2.0 on the season, very concerning.

Hope Hanson improves.

If he can't miss any bats I'm not even sure he's a reliever.

I'm not giving up on him yet but he's not a plus prospect at this point.

Tommy Hanson, the former Braves and Angels pitcher starting pitcher, made his Charlotte debut. After 3 solid innings (3IP, 0R, 2BB, K) a rough fourth inning made for a less than encouraging start (4IP, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, K, HR). Hanson's progress will continue to be noted as he figures to be one of the next starters in line if an extra arm were to be needed for Chicago.

Guess the main thing is see how Hanson progresses start to start.

His first start back is bound to have some problems. It will be interesting to see where he is at in the middle of May

I wonder if those "Some problems" are due to him just wearing out in inning 4.

Yeah, Beck was one of the guys I really liked, but this is an incredibly discouraging start. His K/9 was around 7 to end the year last year in Birmingham, but it's dipped back to terrible.

I mentioned this on the last Podcast we did... Beck is, in a few key ways, a lot like Charlie Shirek. Both can reach mid-90's with a heavy fastball, both are sinker-ballers who get good ground ball rates, both rely heavily on control for success, both were drafted lower than their one-time stock had dictated and were taken as buy-low guys, but had K rates just too low to be relied upon.

Before anyone flips out... They are built differently (Shirek was smaller and had a high-effort delivery), and Shirek was a Top-3 round guy taken 7th, whereas Beck was a top 10 overall guy taken in the 2nd, so the comparison isn't perfect by any stretch. Just pointing out some interesting parallels there. I do think Beck, since he doesn't have to work as hard to get the same velocity and is still young, has plenty of chance to improve.

His control has been encouraging and his homers are in line with his career totals (which are good), but he is flatout going to have to start striking guys out to be anything more than a poor man's version of Carlos Silva or Jon Garland.

If you take from a source, you really have to put a link to the source you borrowed from.

If Beck turns out to be Jon Garland, I will be thrilled.

Poor man's version, meaning ERA in the 4.75-5.00 range in a now suppressed offensive environment. He would be a AAAA guy.
