If he can't miss any bats I'm not even sure he's a reliever. I'm not giving up on him yet but he's not a plus prospect at this point.
April 21, 201411 yr Next in Line Tommy Hanson, the former Braves and Angels pitcher starting pitcher, made his Charlotte debut. After 3 solid innings (3IP, 0R, 2BB, K) a rough fourth inning made for a less than encouraging start (4IP, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, K, HR). Hanson's progress will continue to be noted as he figures to be one of the next starters in line if an extra arm were to be needed for Chicago. Guess the main thing is see how Hanson progresses start to start.

April 21, 201411 yr Yeah, Beck was one of the guys I really liked, but this is an incredibly discouraging start. His K/9 was around 7 to end the year last year in Birmingham, but it's dipped back to terrible.
April 21, 201411 yr I mentioned this on the last Podcast we did... Beck is, in a few key ways, a lot like Charlie Shirek. Both can reach mid-90's with a heavy fastball, both are sinker-ballers who get good ground ball rates, both rely heavily on control for success, both were drafted lower than their one-time stock had dictated and were taken as buy-low guys, but had K rates just too low to be relied upon. Before anyone flips out... They are built differently (Shirek was smaller and had a high-effort delivery), and Shirek was a Top-3 round guy taken 7th, whereas Beck was a top 10 overall guy taken in the 2nd, so the comparison isn't perfect by any stretch. Just pointing out some interesting parallels there. I do think Beck, since he doesn't have to work as hard to get the same velocity and is still young, has plenty of chance to improve.
