I don't understand why he wouldn't have used Javy Guerra over Scott Carroll with the White Sox down 4-3...that's not exactly a long man/waste innings situation there.

I'm not sure how you can be so unprepared in that situation. The coaching staff had to know that the Yankees were going to pinch hit for Johnson with Soriano, right? In that case, the only left handed hitter Downs could have faced was Gardner and Downs should only be pitching to left handed hitters.

There were Roberts (switch), Johnson and Gardner in a row, but no way were they going to leave Johnson in there...if for no other reason than nobody could play 1B any worse.

 

I'm not sure how many games Brendan Ryan has played there his entire career, but Eaton or DeAza should bunt at him.
