Haha, I have so much trouble taking him seriously after having been exposed to his NotGraphs content to frequently.

I like Dayn, talked baseball with him earlier this year at a Baseball Propectus event. But Jacob May is not, IMO, a T10 prospect in this system. More in the teens somewhere.

While I agree, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if more than a few lists have him in the top 10. He's got well-regarded talent and held his own in his first full season of professional ball at A+, which is not an easy stop for minor leaguers. I expect him to start in AA next year which lends itself to the idea that he could be not far off from an MLB promotion.

I'm not sure he's ready for AA. His speed is real and the defense is supposedly coming along nicely, but the bat isn't terribly impressive at this point. Contact rate is good (15% K/PA), but he doesn't walk a ton, shows no significant power (2 HR, .395 SLG in a very hitter-friendly park), and only hit .258 on the year. He did improve a lot after a disastrous April and mediocre May, but it was uneven (big June, OK July, hot August but only in 5 games). He also missed most of August with an injury.

 

He's probably going to AA, but I wouldn't put money on it. I like him, but I'd struggle to put him higher than mid-teens at this point. As he's not likely to be a power guy at all, he needs to get on base and hit for high average and make that speed work for him.

More specifically, they do it with select few key guys. The rest not as much. Hard to say which camp May falls into.

 

Have you guys heard Dayn Perry's Fangraphs Audio podcasts with Carson Cistulli?? They are hilarious together. Although I learn the most from the Dave Cameron and Kiley McDaniel podcasts, the Dayn Perry ones are always a nice break and make me laugh.

I was hanging out with my dad yesterday, somebody who becomes increasingly grumpy about the White Sox each passing year. He was lamenting how the Sox stink and he wishes they had somebody like Theo Epstein to guide them to the promised land. I explained that Theo took over a 71-win team and has turned it into a 73-win team with a list of prospects that's ultimately worth the paper it's printed on.

 

Some of that is my typical Cub bitterness, but in reality there will always be guys who rise far above their prospect standing and guys who crash and burn, and everything in between. The above quote is a testament to that.

i know that took me by total surprise. Scherze???? i thought maybe Lester b/c he

might be cheaper. i was waiting to write up why the sox should go after Lester. the

reason i was also thinking of Lester, i bet Lester won't have a problem as the #2 sp.

 

either way Scherzer or Lester. this will give the sox a solid and dangerous 3 sp's.

whom ever is left in the starting rotation will just help the cause. then if / when Rodon

comes up, look out.

 

remember 1 thing, the starting pitchers don't go to 5 until what, the 2 nd week. also

can you imagine the play off with either Scherzer or Lester.

 

and yes, this will most really go over the 40 million the sox was projecting to spend.
