Who can the Sox sell?

Yes, but the good thing is that #s1 and 2, Cueto and Hammel, will command an Addison Russel...thus, Samardzija is #1 in the affordable category. Should be something around a Peavy return.

As for SS, we could play Garcia or maybe even Saldino there (he's playing SS in Charlotte, for a reason I would presume).

Peavy had a 2nd year on his contract as well when he was traded, so he was an asset the Red Sox could use for 1.333 years. Samardzija is a 2 month rental.

there is some teams that does pay good for a 2 month rental.

I could be wrong but when Peavy was traded to Boston in 2013 he was also still under contract for the 2014 season which added value to the trade. Shark on the other hand is a true rental since he's a FA at the end of the 2015 season.

Peavy was also considered an injury risk and was 2 years older and was clearly on the decline plane of his career.

When Samardzija had 1.5 years left on his contract, his price was much more than Peavy with 1.5 years left on his contract. Plus, Samardzija comes with a comp pick. Peavy didn't

Thus an estimate that Samardzija with 1/2 years = Peavy with 1.5 years. If anything, more.

False. Once Samardzija is traded, he does not come with a comp pick.

Samardzija doesn't come with a comp pick anymore. That's why the White Sox have to weigh whether the return is better than receiving a comp pick. It's a valuable pick. It's not just getting another pick in the late 20's and 30's. It's getting more money allocated into your draft pool thus gaining a lot of flexibility in 2016 draft. It would take a pretty nice package to get Samardzija from the Sox.
