August 7, 201510 yr http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2015/08/b...history-part-3/ In the latest What If? installment, Mark looks at how the Sox were incredibly close to having Fernandomania on the South Side.
August 7, 201510 yr Fernando was incredible. It also amazed me just how long he was pitching for and even his brief comeback with the Cardinals (after pitching in the Mexican leagues). What a legend. Guy loved the game of baseball. Living out in SoCal like I do, it would be incredible for the Sox to have had a guy like Fernando who to this day is revered throughout LA.
August 7, 201510 yr Man, these have been great. I'm not sure I ever realized the collection of organizational talent in the sox org in late 70s early 80s. Really unfortunate how they were stymied from turning things into a powerhouse. Honestly, before this week and the Dombrowski thread, I only really knew of Hawk's terrible year for the bonilla trade and LaRussa.
August 7, 201510 yr Glad you folks like the stories. Always appreciated and thanks to Daniel for his help. Have some stuff "in the can" already which will be released when Daniel sees fit including: My detailed interview / conversation with the late Billy Pierce from 2002. Billy talked about how he actually got into baseball, his memories about playing for the Sox and Giants and the people and events he met or was involved in for the seasons he was in 'the show.' And we've also submitted a look at "SportsVision - The Legacy" (remember that?) what it was and its impact on the Sox franchise. Also included are remembrances from Mike Leiderman, one of the anchors of SportsVision. Mark

Sox didn't want to spend the money or didn't have the money to spend. Pretty much the Sox epitaph since their inception.
August 8, 201510 yr QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 10:34 AM) He pitched decently for the orioles too If his performance for the Orioles was decent, don't ever rag on John Danks again. Fernando had a heck of a career, but really struggled late in the AL.
