Last I heard Buehrle has not officially retired, but he hasn't been throwing either. If he were to pitch this season he'd probably need a few months to get into shape.

He had offers in the offseason but turned them down. I'd say in all likelihood we'll never see Mark Buehrle pitch again.

So why not hold a press conference and just retire?

That's because there is no news. Teams tried to get him over the winter, he didn't care. I doubt he wants to pitch, otherwise he would be pitching now.

Buehrle never really stayed in shape to begin with. He was never a guy who was hitting the gym multiple times a week in the offseason.

 

He did get to a point where he had to start doing though after an off year. At his age, it would take some work to get back into shape after not having done so all winter.

Buehrle has been approached

 

by a couple bears and probably some elk as well.

I can't see him coming back ever. He just doesn't seem like he's the type to stop playing, and then go, "I really miss pitching and getting cortisone shots and being away from family".

Still he likes the same things. He's a freak. What kind of an idiot walks away from the money Buehrle could be making to spend more time with his family and go shoot animals? Next thing you know Buerhle will want to take his pitbull to work with him.

They have $13 million of extra cash, nothing to lose but letting him get into shape on his own timetable, and he walks in as a savior to the franchise he had his storybook success with while they are in contention...call me crazy but I could see it.

Unless he has been working toward pitching, it's pretty unreasonable to think he would be ready to pitch in a couple of months, especially considering how he ended last season injured and not on the playoff roster. He's toast at least this season. Hopefully some good options pop up as they normally do when more teams are willing to pull the plug.

That is probably the best thought in this whole thread. I can't see Mark intentionally doing that to Danks.

I will definitely be at that game he retires at. He was white sox baseball for me, moreso than even Thomas just due to age.
