I'd assume we'd DH Beltran?

I heard part of the interview, and it sure sounded like more of a hypothetical idea as opposed to any facts behind it.

Reading the supporting stuff, there is nothing there suggesting the White Sox are actually interested in Beltran. There is a statement about having a no trade clause to the White Sox, and that is it.

 

I also can't find where Buster Olney said that the White Sox were trying to trade for Gardner.

 

This appears a pretty weak article on the surface to me.

I will say, I think both would be solid fits if we could get them on the cheap. Don't know enough on specifics of Gardner's contract and his longer term health (I know he had issues last year). Always liked him but I don't know how well he'll age. Beltran would be a nice pickup and he'll get moved and ultimately he'll want to play for a contender. I could see him potentially waiving if we were able to sell him on what our intentions were (and he'd be another proven leader to have in the clubhouse).

I don't care nearly as much about the source as I do the quality of the information.

While that isn't a bad strategy it also means that you can buy credibility. Pay for a better platform and you gain credibility. I think SS2k5 has a better idea. Judge the material not the domain. But overall, the odds of it being great is slim on that platform.

Well if an approach keeps failing and failing and failing, keep doing ithe same thing over and over until it works. Who cares that teams that actually win do things the opposite way. Go get 'em Kenny Williams!

Blogger has had numerous rumors over the months on Bruce and Cargo coming and not coming. If you throw out enough rumors something is bound to succeed.

The Royals and Pirates are getting near that point where their windows are closing more than opening.

 

With the Mets, collecting that many young arms seems to be a little bit of an anomaly or "luck" rather than a systematic approach. And they're still a NY team with NY resources (despite the Wilpons), so not sure we can exactly credit them with "doing things the right way."

There is a massive middle ground between the Twins/Astros and what Kenny Williams insists on doing. Every winning team has a solid young core (well it may not be young anymore, but it was when they started winning). The Sox were doing just that and it was WORKING ...but in the Winter of 2014, Williiams/Hahn immediately reverted to Williams' comfort zone and started trading away the young players for veterans,

As for the Astros, i would assume that they learned their lesson with their inane trades for Giles and, Carlos "he must be good - he's a Brewer!!!!" Gomez.

But none of those young players have really amounted to anything so far. Most were fring ML players and some might not be starting for us if they were still here. I would have a problem if Hahn had traded a stud prospect who is playing now for someone else and putting up numbers.

Since when is playing .500 ball "pretty bad"?

 

The Yankees have a reasonably talented team and it's difficult to argue that they're not competitive. Given that and the fact that Beltran has been hitting really well, I don't see why the Yankees would want to trade him at this point. And then there's the partial no-trade clause that would have to be waved. Buster Olney's logic makes no sense to me.

He's obviously referring to the Shark and Frazier trades.

 

Semien's average is quite low, but he's been a very valuable player for the A's, compared to his contract...if he could just hit .250 or .260, and part of that's a function of the huge park he plays in.

 

The other one obviously is Trayce Thompson.

 

If we were wrong on BOTH those guys, it will hurt, especially Thompson, because it means we lost an athletic, cost-controlled CF. Essentially, we "fixed" 3rd base for 2 years only to "unfix" CF for the upcoming future...IF IF IF Thompson's the real deal and can sustain his MLB success at a rate far beyond the numbers he put up the last 2-3 years in our system.

 

Having Anderson, Semien wasn't QUITE such a big deal...but there's not much hope that Jacob May's going to be similarly productive (compared to Thompson). Let's just say the odds are not in favor of it happening, at the moment.
