From 4-2 to 6-4 Cubs lead in 1 swing.

Why not just leave in Hamels??

It's 2008. They have a thing called a pitch count that some managers live and die by.

how about the 3-1 call to kosuke and the howard play at 1st? cubs really getting some help from the umps...they are more vulnerable in the playoffs than they look right now, theyve been pulling games out of their asses lately...and i dont think their starters (particularly dempster and the august version of Z) are going to match up against good offensive teams in the postseason too well....

That Howard call was just awful at first base, but the way things are going, I'm sure Cubs would have found a way to win anyways. They're so much better than every other team in the National League.

How come he throws all sliders and can stay healthy, while Linebrink throws all fastballs and can't?

Because he's MUCH younger. That, and the fact that Marmol will eventually have major arm problems due to all the sliders he throws. Maybe not this year, but eventually, his arm will blow out big time.

Cubs rally, but fall to Astros in extras

By Dave van Dyck | Tribune reporter

12:43 AM CDT, September 3, 2008

The Cubs' problems have gone from bad to worse as Carlos Zambrano's arm has gone from "tired" to iffy.

Zambrano left Tuesday night's 9-7, 11-inning loss to Houston after five innings and 86 pitches and "told pitching coach [Larry Rothschild] he wasn't feeling good," according to manager Lou Piniella.

Wasn't feeling good, as in …

"It has to be in his arm," Piniella said. "I'll let you know [more] tomorrow."

Zambrano will visit Cubs orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo on Wednesday, but it's obvious he will be shut down for several days, which would put his effectiveness for the playoffs in doubt.

"If he can pitch, he'll pitch," Piniella said. "If not, we'll put [ Sean] Marshall in the rotation and go from there."

Zambrano hit 96 m.p.h. on the radar gun in the first inning but issued back-to-back walks as the Astros tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning with two runs.

Zambrano's health has been questioned since he was pushed back from his Sunday start to give him an extra two days of rest. He has insisted his arm is just tired and isn't hurting, and that this has nothing to do with an earlier trip to the DL with a shoulder strain.

Piniella insisted before the game "there's nothing wrong with him," even though he was 1-1 with a 7.43 ERA in five August starts.

I think it was pretty obvious that Zambrano has been hurt for a few weeks, maybe a month now. Media has been speculating on it but sounds like Carlos has been too proud. You know something is wrong when he takes himself out of the game. He is usually too stubborn.

Very selfish thing for him to do too. He could have hurt himself worse, and who knows how long he might be out now.

If Z is really hurt, and Harden gets his monthly DL trip, the cubs playoff rotation all of a sudden becomes terrible.

1. Dempster

2. Lilly

3. Marquis

4. Marshall

Big IFs, not likely.

Milwaukee had a chance to make it interesting yesterday, but as usual they played like they're afraid of the post season.

So Zambrano missed his MRI today? Also, sounds like Harden is injured more than they've said.

Something is f***ed up over there. Why did he miss his MRI? Didnt he think that may be a bit important?

Saw that cubs fans are now saying they believe in the curse because Harden's shoulder is hurt. Ummm, the guy is always hurt folks

No kidding. One thing that I'm shocked hasn't become a bigger deal is just how much of an asshole Piniella is being to the media. If Ozzie was acting the way that Lou is, you'd have articles all over the place.
