I'm one of those who sees a big difference between getting an edge on the field working around the game rules, and using an illegal substance to give you a constant advantage. He said Illegal...he could have taken something that wasn't illegal at the time, or he could have taken something while outside the country in an area where it was legal, or he could always go the "i didn't know" route that Bonds did. Hawk has told the story 1000X about the eras being different. I doubt anyone using a spitball in the HR era would be looked at in the same light as Perry was during his time. I don't consider using common sense to see through the cover-up that the MLBPA and owners conspired to be "irresponsible." The burden of proof in the courtroom and the inherent flaws in our criminal justice system (O.J., anyone?) should never trump common sense. Just assuming isn't enough to keep someone out of the hall. The combination of Sammy's unnatural increase in muscle mass, Sammy's mediocre batting average, and Sammy's mediocre defense were enough for me.
