Robert Thread: Sox talking to Reds, Mets
Chicago White Sox replied to Snopek's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My guess is they haven’t offered a prospect like Clifford just yet. That being said, they desperately need a CF and there is no one out there of Robert’s caliber. And if we’re being honest, Clifford is a good not great prospect. Enough warts there that he’s theoretically attainable for Robert. The only challenge is the Mets don’t really need money, so absorbing part of his contract probably doesn’t help. -
Well s%*#, @Chicago White Sox. Will this Clifford thing into existence like Murakami.
-
And Clifford is only 22. Like you said, hiding him at LF/DH for a couple seasons wouldn’t be the end of the world. We are already used to bad defense in LF anyways. 🤣

Exactly -
Not at all costs and going into debt. There is a tipping point where the costs will out weigh it.
-
Yeah. He’s here now but a 2-year deal isn’t “long-term.”
-
The teams have more costs than just salary. I think most agree with the reports that JR brought in Ishbia to pay debts and Ishbia turned down the twins deal due to the debts. However, you are correct that we do not know for sure and never will unless there is a cap and/or floor for salary that requires it.
-
Yep. There’s no guarantee Murakami is all that he is hoped to be and/or that he will be with the Sox in 2028.
-
They are far and away the most loaded. They make $330M a year on their regional TV deal alone. That alone is more than what Forbes estimates the Pirates made in total revenue in 2024.

A league with an anti-trust exemption.... -
There’s no communism in baseball! It’s all capitalism, baby!
-
Oh I will never forgot. Someone has to hold that dude accountable. And don’t get me wrong, he obviously has some connection, but as with most “insiders” like him they love the attention and tend to overplay their hand.
-
Fair but until unbiased individuals with economic expertise are allowed to examine MLB team books it is debatable if they are in fact, "losing money." Just adding up the existing and new media rights deals MLB is taking in around two billion a season just from that part of the business.
-
Why are we acting like they are the only loaded franchise?
-
And the easiest way to increase it is to win.
-
Again, the Dodgers are spending more based on a larger revenue base than all of their peers. They aren’t absorbing massive losses each year in an attempt to win at all costs. If you want to celebrate their amazing regional TV contract and attribute that to trying harder, by all means have at it.
-
VERY WELL SAID!
-
Clifford has also played 1B and that’s not exactly a position that’s set longterm so if he has to move there in a few years after proving he can’t play OF, it’s an option.
-
This is a good fan prospective. The owners view it differently. Sure they want to win but they dont want the team to lose money year after year either. The evil billionaires didn't get to be billionaires by losing money. The value of a franchise significantly decreases if there is significant debt upon the sale.
-
I would hope that if a prospect like Clifford was being offered, Getz would have already taken the deal. I know all the rumors have been about the Sox wanting pitching in return for Robert, but Getz would be nuts to turn down such an offer, which makes me think the offers aren’t that good.

Look, if the choice is Conforto, or the Getz failed prospect special, I would take the failed 'spect over Conforto, every single itme. -

I won’t accept anything less than Clifford for Robert. Throw his ass in LF against RHP, move Baldwin over to CF, and go with some RF platoon (Pereira along with Kelenic or a cheap LH vet) until Braden is ready. Benintendi shares the DH spot with the two catchers and fills in at LF occasionally. Hill makes the roster to help against LHP and serve as a late inning defensive replacement (god knows we’ll need him with this OF group). I could 100% live with that setup for the season. If the Big Red Dog can’t handle LF, the DH spot will likely open up at some point in the near future and he can shift there. And if Baldwin can’t handle CF (or the OF in general) on a regular basis, he moves to a true UT role playing a little bit everywhere. -
We almost had Tatsuya Imai locked up for about 5 minutes on New Year’s Eve. NorthsideBob has Getzy on speed dial. NEVER FORGET.

I can’t argue. At least Kelenic has youth on his side. I don’t see Conforto magically getting better or staying healthy. If we aren’t necessarily expecting to make the postseason, see what some outfielders can do that aren’t nearing retirement.
