Dodgers are hamstrung in multiple ways with respect to building up prospect capital but they are simply very good at baseball talent evaluation/development so everyone gets to be mad at them.

He struck out 3, walked two, and gave up 2 HR’s in 7 innings. He must have induced some weak contact outside of the two bombs as the xERA was really good, but that is ugly from a FIP perspective. The lack of strikeouts is what concerns me. Hopefully there is a fix for that because he’s going to struggle if it sticks around 6 per 9 like it has the last two months.

Just watched the Sox Machine podcast on the deal. Fegen said his White Sox sources told him they zeroed in on Castillo because "He's controllable, he has a vested option through 2028." Take it for what it's worth. In 2028 by the way Castillo will be 35 years old.

Exactly. And don’t get me wrong, I love that he pounds the strike zone, but without generating some whiffs that success won’t last forever. He could very well get better with time…just not sure I want to bank on that down the stretch if a higher impact arm is an option.

I don't like it but at least it's not one of the top prospects and it's a way better option than that rumor about Peralta. The path to it being a worthwhile trade isn't such an unlikely outcome. Castillo's underlying metrics are pretty much the same as they have been, seems unlikely he's cooked. Could just as easily return to form. Meanwhile, maybe Smith's bat stalls out and he can't find a position to play. Would've rather done nothing, but meh.

I am very anti-pitcher in the sense that I'm never into heavy investment into pitchers as they tend to be unreliable due to injury. HOWEVER I will also mention that pitchers do not reliably hit the aging wall the way position players do. So I think it is perfectly logical to see this season's dip by Castillo and fear the worst, but pitchers are also more apt to bounce back to career norms in their mid 30s than hitters are.
