  1. It reminds me of my two Baltimore Raven fan friends. They used to get into deep arguments over who was better Kyle Boller or Anthony Wright. I had some hope for Tilson after last season but honestly he never deserved a shot with what he was doing in the ML this year to begin with. Just when our OF gets healthy Garcia need to go back to CF. At least he'll give you .700 OPS with mediocre defense.
  2. Smith is easily ahead of Collins probably ahead of Ruiz. Ruiz is having a terrible year probably has fallen to the borders of the top 100. Smith always had the defensive skillset the question is his bat well he's answering those questions in a big way and unlike Collins he's doing it in a way that is much more translatable to the ML level (ie making contact). Collins has 109 SO in 380 PA. He's not going to have a 400 ish OBP with a 225-250 avg at the MLB level sorry. His BB% is 21.1.
  3. Was he an everyday C? That's sort of the point where is the harm in having players learn other positions in the minor leagues? That's actually preferable and gives them another position to move to if they are blocked at the MLB level. Dodgers do this all the time. Hell Smith is playing a ton of 3B despite being a stud at C. I understand some people want to pencil guys in at certain positions and just sort of leave them there but it's more important to get your talent on the field you talk about ML but what about MLB? A FA Hahn likes may come available it's a huge benefit being able to move a young guy off a position even if he is slightly less effective because at the end of the day if the player is a good player and still under control he's underpaid and you are still getting a ton surplus value regardless of where he is on the diamond.
  4. It isn't that complicated you can't imagine the best case borderline homeristic scenario for Frye then say the return is too little. It's a similar situation to Kahnle if we get a good return for him top 100 he should be moved even if we have to give up another asset. Let some other team gamble he'll be the next Miller. Relievers are not good gambles in my book let alone ones with a history of arm problems that have come out of nowhere.
  5. It's probably best to just wait until next year to move him or take the comp pick but who knows maybe someone offers good value.
  6. Smith is probably the hotest catching prospect in baseball right now and has all the tools from a defensive standpoint. Zavala isn't worth mentioning. Collins has had 28 PB in 138 games and strikes out way too much he's still a good prospect at C but there is a ton of risk just because he doesn't have the natural feel of a Smith or even Ruiz he'll basically have to hit to stay there. Actually one of the things I like about the dodgers is they force many of their guys to basically play two positions even a guy like Smith who can play a solid C also plays 3B.
  7. You can move them around. Mejia who was just traded is a perfect example of this if they are still young enough there is plenty of time to learn another position in the minor leagues infact in many cases the position they entered the minors is not the position they exit the minors playing fulltime. All you are doing is just expediting the natural process. Hell in a ton of cases they can be moved around at the MLB level as well. You have to make allowances for talent.
  8. I don't agree with that either because when it comes to trades as we all know there are limited buyers for guys and the prospects pools of these farms are limited as well. I wouldn't want to trade for a guy whose a lesser prospect just to fill a need. If the prospects hits they'll be a market for him anyways like I said in the other thread we don't need to really worry about positions at this point what is most important is talent. Also playing in the AL always leaves an extra roster spot to work with (DH). Besides when they are in the minor leagues you can move them around most guys don't even end up in the same position they were drafted at. The only concern I would have if we had too many 1B/DH/LF types at the top of the system. Well right now we really only have one in Eloy. I guess Burger qualifies as well but you can't really forecast him right now. I would like to bring in some more athletic guys you could move around the infield but not at the cost of taking a much lesser prospect because Sanchez is sort of an example of why that doesn't work. If these middle infielders aren't great prospects then they won't produce enough to be moved to 3B or another position where you expect offense.
  9. Dodgers have a ton of young talent outside of the top 100. Starling Heredia Alvarez They also have three quality catching prospects. Most guys still have Ruiz at the top of their prospects lists but Will Smith has vastly out performed him. If we could get Ruiz for a couple of relievers like Soria and Avilian I would be ecstatic.
  10. This is just sort of a terrible way to run a team. First of all young guys Tatis being the obvious example are appreciating assets. Sure a bunch of them end up being busts but take a look at the Yankees if you want to see sort of what good scouting can do with these trades. You only have to hit with one or two of your trades out of ten to make the process a complete homerun. They basically turned Brian McCann into Stanton plus got to keep a prospect from the trade. We aren't in a position to compete right now even if the prospects end up blocked if they turn out we can move them for positions of need. We can find AAAA guys on waiver wire or non-tender market or make a trade for someone out of options. Hell we can just take on salary like we did with Soria to fill in positions with vet guys if we really want. Why worry about the quality of the placeholders? The reality is this team is probably going to suck tremendously for the next two years until the kids are ready. The idea should be when we are ready to compete have as much young talent as possible not trade assets to collect a bunch of AAAA placeholders. Who cares if they are better then what they have? So we win 63 games instead of 60. Big whoop. If they aren't going to be a key part of our future contending team then they have no use to me.
  11. Agreed First of all AAAA guys don't help us in anyway. We are on pace to lose close to 100 games and are looking at least two more years of rebuilding before all our top guys are in the ML. Secondly contending teams are not going to trade pieces off their roster right now anyways. They want to trade prospects. The offseason is when you target non-tender and out of option guys.
  12. Why does it matter? Does anyone view him as our longterm guy at catcher? He could be valuable to a contending team as a backup or replace a starter who is not getting it done as to who would immediately replace him well we could always just do a swap and take someone else backup. Pretty much any team could use Omar as a backup but as a starter the Redsox could use an upgrade. The Brewers who are all in desperately need help there. The Nationals really need some help. There should be a strong market. Why not move him now? We have Castillo coming back in August anyways and signed for another year. Zack Collins will probably be ready at some point next season. Why hold onto him? He'll have some value now is the time to take advantage of that
  13. Guys I expect to be moved. Soria Narváez Shields Avilan Cedeno Guys that could be moved Abreu Rodon Sanchez I honestly was hoping for much more then what we got. Which is why we should have signed some reclimination guys in the offseason
  14. Abreu really screwed us by getting cold at the worst time.
  15. That sort of falls under the selection bias of so "you are saying there is a chance" the vast majority of Boras clients never sign extensions injured or otherwise infact Boras told Strasburg not to sign the extension and he did so anyways. Besides signing him to extension when he has 3.5 years of control would be stupid anyways. Which maybe why Boras would go for it but why should the Whitesox? Boras has a pretty well read playbook he prefers his clients to hit FA. The only time that doesn't happen is usually when the offer is so heavily lopsided in favor of his client like the Elvin Andrus deal where he feels he won't ever get it on the FA market which is why extensions are so few and far between.
  16. This has always been a false assertion of course we can declare who won or lost a trade early. Sure it may change over time but as of 7/13/2018 the cubs massively overpaid for what they have received which is a 4th starter. If we wanted to we could move Cease or Eloy and get much more then Q back. How could that be viewed anything other then a win? Conversely Tatis JR is a clear loss. Why? Because he has much more value then what we got out of James Shields. Players are assets that go up and down in value that isn't just limited to prospects by the way. People just highlight them because there is more often a higher variance between the expected performance and what they actually do at the ML level but like I said the Cubs never thought they were trading for a 4th starter. They thought they would be getting a solid number two in alot of ways that trade has really started to snowball on them because one of the reasons they went out and got Darvish was Q's poor performance after the trade
  17. Well I was hoping to hit on at least one of those sort of reclimination guys. Everyone so far failed.
  18. I mean Abreu has been below replacement level. It's just the truth I doubt we get anything for him unless some team is interested in trading for a name.
  19. I think that is sort of nuts. Rodon has control and great stuff if I'm the Yankees and have to give up a top 100 prospect for a rental like Hamels I would rather give up a large package for a guy with control. I do think there is risk obviously health wise which is a big reason why I'd like to move him but to the team acquiring him at least that health risk doesn't come with a longterm deal plus he still has control. Of course that is all predicated on him continuing to go out and dominate.
  20. Do we even know that moving forward? Other then a half a season in the bigs is there anything to suggest he can continue to hit for that kind of power struggling to make contact?
  21. First of all he's repped by Boras so no extension. Two, we are at least two years away Rodon has 3.5 years of control. It might make sense to move him now if he continues to show he's healthy assuming we get a huge package for him.
  22. I think there is a chance of us getting a huge package back. There are teams in desperate need of pitching right now it's a sellers market and most probably don't want to give up a top prospect for a rental. I'd be willing to take a q return whether that qualifies as ace return I dunno. The Yankees desperately need a starter.
  23. Well Gio and Fulmer for instance. The Burger pick doesn't look so hot. Burdi looks like he may never be healthy. Ian Clarkson is a guy like Gio we traded for oft injured hoping he'd regain his stuff. Hasn't happened. Kopech has really struggled in AAA.
  24. They've been a punching bag for 100 years so at least they know when to hold back. Epstein oversaw a complete teardown it's necessary it's the only way we'll compete. The only thing that sort of sucks is we have missed on some guys that will prolong the process.
  25. Regardless of what the other offers were we easily won the deal. The cubs bet on his advanced stats but he never really rebounded last year. Now both his advanced and normal metrics are mediocre this year. 4.64 FIP. 3.96 ERA. Pretty sure the Cubs were expecting more when they gave up a huge package for him.
