I would have liked the Sox to have grabbed S-N. Fangraphs wasn't enamored in 2023: 39. Canaan Smith-Njigba, LF Drafted: 4th Round, 2017 from Rockwall Heath HS (TX) (NYY) Age 23.8 Height 6′ 0″ Weight 215 Bat / Thr L / R FV 35+ Tool Grades (Present/Future) Hit Raw Power Game Power Run Fielding Throw 30/45 60/60 35/45 45/45 40/45 45 The older brother of Ohio State wide receiver phenom Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Canaan is another of the many prospects acquired from the Yankees for Jameson Taillon. The barrel-chested Smith-Njigba has huge strength-driven power and a patient approach that borders on passive. He has a career .387 OBP but hasn’t been able to actualize his plus raw power in games, driving the ball into the ground at a whopping 66% clip in 2021 and a 54% rate in 2022. His size creates some stiffness and imbalance during his swing, which can lead to him putting suboptimal contact in play. When Smith-Njigba takes a comfortable, max-effort hack, it’s obvious that he has big power, and his exit velo data reinforces the visual evaluation. In most cases, corner-only outfielders who play consistent big league roles have better actualized their raw power in games. Smith-Njigba’s on-base skills drive an above-replacement forecast here, but it’s tough to project a real big league role, and he may be an interesting candidate for teams in Asia.
  2. I could see this team being at 48-60 by the trade deadline, if Cease doesn't get traded in spring training. If they trade Cease, Soroka, anybody from the bullpen who can fog a mirror, I could then see them crashing, burning, and finishing with about 68 wins.

He went by the 8 worst teams in baseball twice, now, without a flyer. He must not be that well regarded.

They could claim Smith-Njigba, then just bump Foster to the 60-day. I'd guess that the last week of spring training is a great time to DFA all the guys you want to sneak through, as everybody's under the same roster crunch. i don't think it's a matter of S-N being "better" than Fletcher or DeLoach, but one of the three can pop faster or bigger than the others. Then there's your RF or 4th OF. I'd rather be running a guy like S-N out there as a 4th outfielder than the end of career dreck we've been doing for the last 10 years. (tekotte, Shuck)

I would claim Smith-Njigba and DFA Sheets in a New York yesterday.

Grichuk OPSed .861 in Colorado, and .677 at sea level in Anaheim. I'm not going to "should" on Getz for this one. Besides, Pillar has the better, "Rookie, is that PlayStation making you a better hitter?" stare than Grichuk.

Here's one guy I find interesting and am rooting for him. Burrowes, not Cohen, tho Cohen is interesting, too. And as always, I wish him well.
  9. Well, that makes 2 of us saying Colas doesn't need to be rushed immediately.
  10. Too much snickering about 69.
  11. Santander's only a FA after this year. Hays and Mullins aren't FAs until after the 2025 season.
  12. My guess is that the White Sox and the city announce the project, JR cashes out with a deal similar to Angelos in Baltimore for tax purposes, and he has little to nothing to do with the design, and all.
  13. And then we'll all get cancer and die, and one day a meteor will hit the Earth and make it unlivable for human life, so no one will even ever remember or know we were here. Jeez, dude, if you're just going to be glum about everything, carry it through to the end.
  14. I'm hitting a sore spot with some people, and I'll stop. The whole story feels a little heavy handed, and sounds like a million other "mayor is too inexperienced to be effective, but skillfully runs crime wave with iron fist" BS I've heard for 60 years.
  15. And I don't remember this woman assaulting people she didn't know. I'm pretty sure Ligue had some words for the arresting officers. I sure hope they bring this teacher to justice. She sounds real dangerous, and worthy of a lot of overtime.
  16. I think that Lenyn Sosa should get a fair shot at starting innings. He's always taken a bit to master a level. The bat's there, he's supposedly got a good glove, so it's sink or swim for him, at this point. I think Colas needs a little more TLC and intensive coaching, and that has to happen in AAA. Jirschele is supposed to be an amazing managerial prospect, so get him and our roving outfield guy working with him to get him to his sink or swim month in the majors.
  17. And everybody jumping up to high five each other that it was a teacher who lived outside of Chicago. I'm shocked that the guy who knew the guy who knew the guy on the CPD didn't also know the teacher was collecting food stamps illegally, and sharing the money with Pastor Jeremiah Wright and the Jackie Robinson West Little League team. I don't remember people bending themselves into pretzel shapes to link up William Ligue to Mayor Daley, and hearing from a guy who knew a guy in the electrician's union that he was a 10th ward precinct captain under Vrdolyak.
  18. I have. I've lived in Chicago my whole life, and have heard many rumors from people who "know a guy who knows a guy in the CPD", or "know a fireman", or whatever. Most of them somehow link to Jesse Jackson, Oprah, Harold Washington, or some other famous black person. Excuse me if I don't suspend all doubt and jump in both feet first on this one.
  19. I guess it's so much more plausible that one or more people stood up, sprayed bullets into the crowd in the left field bleachers, hit a few people, but nobody saw or heard them. Maybe somebody fired a couple shots 20 years from now, and it went through a hole in time.
  20. What's the point? "No comment" leaves open the silly notion that GMs are panicky dweebs who fall to their knees in tears at the first piece of bad news, but Getz is too honorable to say so. It's a silly question that deserves to be shut right down.
  21. And I'm wrong. Reading another article, they only come down with about 10% of the velocity they went up with, but 300 feet per second (330 km/hr) is still enough to pierce a skull. https://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/homework/s95523.htm#:~:text=A bullet is fired at,the downward suck of gravity.
  22. Because somebody stuck a microphone in his face and asked him the question?
  23. Not really "magic bullets". It's not infrequent. https://science.howstuffworks.com/question281.htm#:~:text=If you fire a gun,apogee%2C the bullet will fall.
  24. Now, you can have a good consortium on whether Lenyn Sosa can wear his hat cocked, or how Jordan Leasure jogs in from the bullpen.
