It's not as if he invented the tech either, it was used in golf and etc. No one wants you to believe that this tech has revolutionized the game more than the guys who are selling it. Dylan Cease was paired up to those camera's all last year and last off-season. They identified what his "issue was" but we're 1+ year later and Cease still has no rise on his FB. I love tech and data - I work in the field - but sometimes the impact of tech on athletes is really overblown. Rapsado machines are a useful resource, but they don't dictate the success of a pitcher. They merely help evaluate what a pitcher is doing, but people knew Cease's fastball didn't have the life it needed even if there weren't machines telling us the spin and rise. EDIT: I don't think anything rubs me the wrong way more than someone proclaiming how hard someone works when they've never been on a team with him or in a room with him. The hardest workers in my life, typically, have been incredibly quite. They never proclaimed to the world how much harder they were working.

Which is an entirely different argument. Also, injuries are up in baseball for SP's, not down. Driveline's focus on maximum spin and velocity could very well cause more injuries. We honestly have no idea. While tech helps to catch things like drops in arm angle and velocity - allowing a team to react and help keep a pitcher healthy - it's very possible that the training regimens and etc are having an impact on SP health.

I'm really not; you're giving credit for a guy like Giolito's turnaround to someone who had nothing to do with it what-so-ever. Giolito didn't consult Bauer and certainly didn't use him as a barometer. Giolito made the commitment, sought the help from those he worked with before, put in the work and changed his career. It had nothing to do with Trevor Bauer. I've never once met a pitcher who used tech because Trevor did; not discrediting that Trevor MAY have introduced some tech. I also think the impact of tech on pitchers might be the most overblown thing I've ever seen in my life; ode to Harold on this one. It's a tool and resource to help you improve; it in no way makes or breaks your career.

How the f does Steve Stone know how hard Trevor Bauer works? Carson Fulmer is on the Trevor Bauer regimen; how's that working out for him? You're 100% right too; I don't like Bauer, and most people who have played with him don't like him either. He who shouts the loudest about how smart and hard he works is likely not one who works the hardest and/or knows the most. I've said it before, but when your teammates in high school, college, and the pros universally don't like you, it's not because you "speak your mind and are a free thinker." It's because you're an asshole.

Pitchers have been playing long toss for 20+ years; long toss was thrown everyday by pitchers when I was in college in 2005. There were certainly skeptics in the game, but it was common training programs used by pitching coaches across the country. I'll give you edgertronic and bringing that tool into baseball but the impact of that tool is whatever... Giolito tinkered because he was awful and knew he had to change or lose his career. Man you guys really reach on the impact of Bauer. Pitchers have been using data and tech for quite sometime. Pitchers have been changing deliveries and etc forever. 2018 was great, but every other year counts. To just pretend like he hasn't been an average SP every other year is just dishonest. He certainly isn't elite.

Never said 2018 doesn't count; I said I wouldn't put much stock in his performance this season. 1. He cheated and openly admitted it (maybe he'll keep cheating going forward because it's not enforced but if not, that needs to be taken into account) 2. Ignoring this past year, Bauer has under 3.3 fWAR in 3 of 4 seasons; if you go by bWAR (which I prefer for evaluating actual results), he has only eclipsed 3 WAR once in his entire career. To put a pitcher with the above stats into elite company is crazy imo.

My number 1 rule of thumb is never ever sign and pay a guy for a career year in his contract year. Given that this was only 60 games, even more so. When I am evaluating bauer I personally wouldn't even count this past season. People putting Bauer in elite company are absolutely crazy imo. This whole student of the game stuff is such nonsense too. Most any youngish pitcher is just like bauer with tech and analytics. He's just vocal about it.

Players don't try to beat the shift because it would involve them changing their swing and approach; Ryan Howard wasn't going to lay down a bunt and forgo trying to do damage with his power. Chitown has really inflated the difficulty of bunting by world class hitters who make contact with the ball while their bat is moving. If I could bunt 90+ MPH pitches consistently, so can world class hitters even if they haven't practiced. The fact is, they don't want to and it's because it would limit the damage they can do.

I suffered mightily with ADHD as a kid but have learned to use it as an advantage in my career. That said, I get zoned and when I get zoned I'll usually knock out a ton of work quickly. That zone can take some time; some mornings I'm in it, other times it takes me until noon, sometimes even early afternoon. I don't mind working at night if I'm at my house with my wife doing other things. My brain likes multiple things going on more than one, so it works out well for me.

Glad everything worked out OK for you and the family; that stuff is just inexcusable. It drives me nuts. I've heard people say you can't use raw numbers because it makes it sounds worse; as if a life is worth less today than it was 50 years ago because the population is higher. I just don't understand the thought process some have.

My wife got a new gig and they make her go in 2 weeks and then work from home for 2 weeks - to limit how many people are in the office. She said no one wears a mask except to enter the office; she keeps hers on while she works and people tell her she doesn't have to. It's baffling to me. My wife just started, and it's a new field for her so the training is really important but I still don't understand why so many people are there. The way things are going, it's just a matter of time.

Started a new job with a new company and have never once been in their office. It feels weird for sure, and the way things are going, I may never actually go there. I enjoy remote working quite a bit to be honest, but I get that for some it's a struggle. For me, I work when I want outside of calls, and when I finish my work I'm just done for the day instead of sitting around trying to appease bosses with my presence. Thinking about moving to a more nature filled area with the wife and sticking with remote contract work as a systems analyst. School has been move 100% online, but I get an E-Mail a day from DePaul lately - similarly to what you are saying - about a positive test on campus.

A lot of analysts/baseball development people are leaving the game. They already took slight paycuts to work in the industry because it was the a "fun industry" but now that the job security was removed this year there's no reason for many to stay. They can go get better paying more secure jobs in other industry.

This is just an example of recency bias. Players who didn't cheat hated steroids more than anything; it literally cost players jobs and opportunities if they weren't willing to use as well. Stealing signs offends the other team more, nothing more to it honestly. And no player is going to sign for less money just to not have AJ Hinch be there coach. That's just illogical. Bauer would sign here tomorrow if they offered him the most money and Hinch was in charge.
