Machado's 2017 was such an anomaly it should be completely thrown out. He had by far his worst BABIP of .265 despite having his best Hard contact percentage and no significant change is his GB/FB ratio compared to 16 and 18. That's historically bad luck for a player of his caliber.

I think that was more of them saying they aren't going to trade guys for short term answers. It's literally impossible for them to not sign stop gaps at this point.

He almost certainly is smart enough to know that. That still doesn't make it wise to publicly admit that you're in deep if you fail to get the guy.

Again, what else is he supposed to say given that question? Publicly acknowledging that they need him as bad as they do would only make Hahn's job more difficult.

They make money off actual Cubs games. They want as many people as possible interested in tuning into cubs games. Hell, they have gone as far as trying to convince Sox fans to root for the Cubs. They certainly don't have an obligation, legal or moral, to behave otherwise. If that bothers you, stop listening. They don't owe you anything.
