  1. I am not sure if Michigan will actually go ahead and sue Webber for the ton of money Michigan paid in forfeited NCAA fees back to the NCAA, but I wish they would. Webber got so lucky when Martin died before he could testify in court as to the pay-offs. I vividly remember in the season following Fischer's firing, when Ellerbee was interim, and Michigan went n to win the 1st ever Big 10 tourney, how much pressure the media was playing on Michigan to make Ellerbee a permanent hire rather than interim because after all he won the Big 10 title. And I kept screaming at the tv, "but we have no idea if he can run the program!" And the media pressure was intense, the word "interim" was removed from Ellerbee's title, and we look back and see what happened... which is exaclty how we got Fischer to begin win - because he won before we knew if could run the program. Both flukes, and both costly mistakes. When winning becomes more important than a clean program, trouble will follow. We paid the price we should have paid for a program out of control - and it never should have been allowed to happen. That is why to me Coach K is someone that I always repect because he wins and runs a clean program. I think we are blessed with a coach at Michigan who can do that. And we need that - because we look MSU - now they got the real deal with Izzo, he is another Coach K type in that the MSU program under Izzo will never be out of control and they will win because they have a super quality coach.
  2. the penalities were a lot more than that - ignorance or omission of the full nature of penalities, doesn't matter, you are factually wrong. and no M fan is arguing that the program was not out of control and that the NCAA penalties were not deserved - it is regrettable to say the least that what happened happened and it has cost the school a lot. In fact last season I took my grandson in Crysler, showed him where the banners once were, explained why they were gone, and we had a good discussion about ethics and cheating and right and wrong. Wrong was done in our program. Cannot change that. Michigan responded. The NCAA responded. That is how it needed to be for something that should never have happened. That the NCAA has said we are eligible again for post-season was a pleasant surprise. M fans would not have b****ed had it gone the other way. Happy it came down this way. The only unhappy people are those who have always, tiresomely, whined against Michigan - people who cannot beat us on the field, on the court, on the ice, and far and away most importantly, in the classroom.
  3. I'd agree but you never think I think I agree with you and we'd go in circles again but you have been posting very wisely. Since the US (supporter of the military coup in Brazil in 1964 and yes I remember it) is the sole superpower in the world, we are akin to the position of the Roman empire. And since - contrary to the 2000 campaign promises - the current administration is going to impose its will for regime change on other nations, we will be subject to increasing acts of terror. (Note how this administration has also decided that the PLO should change its leadership - who are we to decide who should lead other people or nations? If another nation decided that our leaders must go and invaded our country or took other acts to forciably change our government, we would not be very happy...) Anyway by nature, Rome is going to be attacked by the Goths and the Visigoths. It is the way of things. Since we are Rome, s*** will happen to us. That will be especially so when this country, as it has done the last several years, unilaterally decides to break treaties (the ABM treaty), invade sovereign states, reject treaties that the vast majority of the rest of the world has approved (war crimes tribunal, Kyoto). With a culture as imposing as ours and with sole super power status, we inevitably become a target. It is just natural history. It has happened through out human history. It will continue to do so. The only way to ameliorate some of that would be to be seen as a partner with the rest of the world and not its colussus. However - again - rejecting the the war crimes tribunal, rejecting Kyoto, abdicating ABM, the refusal to go back to the UN for a second resolution - what we have done is inflamed the people who would do us harm. Is this nation one bit safer than it was on 10 September 2001? No, terrorism has increased elsewhere and it will hit here again. And we have asked for it. The greatest immorality let alone horrendous act of selfish unpatriotiusm was in the 2000 election when we should have been debating what the US should do as the sole super power, how we will live that out in a world that is fraught with danger, instead, we debated the size of one's tax cut. (My apologies, Mr. Eye, my friend, but to my way of thinking, the greed that says I want an extra $400/$600/whatever in my pocket at the cost of everything else is immoral. There is no free lunch. See George Will in the current Newsweek about now "conservatives" have betrayed all their principles. At least the Dems were honest to say "tax and spend." The concept of "cut taxes and spend, spend, spend is the selfishness of a me-generation that thinks it should have everything at no cost, and is willing to bribe its way to votes.) This nation faces serious challenges. We are not meeting any of them. We aren't even talking about them. We have people wrapping themselves in the flag and saying "I'm against terrorism" with no discussion of what we actually do as a nation to interact with the rest of the world to ensure saftey for all. All lst spring we had people mocking the UN, mocking the nations that wanted us to go back for a second resolution, saying we could do what we want and f*** france, f*** the UN, f*** this, f*** that. the rest of the world hears us and says f*** the US. And they are very human to say that when in response to our saying that. And they will say with weapons of terror just as ws we have said it with weapons of war. Jesus said, to whom much is given, from the one, much is owed. We owe it to the much we have to be sharing partners in the world rather than go it alone cowboys. But the next campaign will eb fought on greed - more tax cuts - rather than on responsibility, our role in the world, and what will ensure global harmony. f*** Kyoto. f*** ABM. f*** France. f*** the UN. f*** the war crimes tribunal. f*** it all. And then be surprised when someone says f*** US? The extra few bucks in our pocket is not buying us security. It is costing us safety.

  6. The judicial system ignoring a person with 400 DUI arrests is like a president ignoring all the scientific facts on global warning.

  9. wait until he wears his tank top! That might be getting saved for MSU though!
  10. no prob -- I was going to post before, but I will say it now - I am not predicting any Big 10 titles or final 4s but Michigan has a far better basketball team than many suspect - it will finish top half of the Big 10. This is not local fan talking big. Amaker has turned that program around, is a better coach than we dared believe, and has recruited well. It may be another year or two before we can talk big but we can say, we are better than most think we will be. We are on the way back. On the way, as in not there yet, but getting there.
  11. ACC football sucks. They can never be doubted in basketball, especially with Chicago's own Coach K (Weber High School). But I note which Big 10 team won today... Mcould that be?

  15. so who the hell is voting for this quy from Pittsburgh? given my bias, Pittsburgh dude is still not in my top 5 and does this Manning brother listed keep his pants on? Trivia question is who here rememebers the last (and only) Heisman trophy winner off a losing team and what long-time business connection he had in Chicago - which is how I met him
  16. you will remember (and I have no proof because soxtalk lost my original signature) that my original 2003 Heisman trophy pick was John Navarre!!!! I was calling him the winner last January after he outdueled Grossman in the bowl game! And I still feel good about that call on my part!

  19. I never take any of these stories at face value. IBob, I agree, always teach a child tom use the real names. Nuke, it is far better to teach other kids not to make fun of anyone's family. And that begins by each family teaching that to one's own children. One could mock anyone's family out there.
  20. Michigan is not Nebraska. Coach Carr will be at Michigan as long as he wants to be and I am very thankful for that. It will not be long enough for me. The special teams coach has not been seen since the Iowa game. It was his first year. Coach Carr has not called him out not bashed him. Lloyd has said, in reference to his whereabouts, that it is a personal matter and Lloyd does not feel at liberty to say more. I think that is very classy, especially as there may be a personal tragedy going on (as I have heard through the grapevine) and it is not our business, nor is the blame game an answer to anything. Yes we lost a shot at the national title because of the punting team mistakes. We also could have fallen apart as a team after those two losses. Instead we are ranked #4 and going to the Rose Bowl. That is quality coaching. Perry gets my Heisman vote because I am biased.
  21. I'd love to see the Yankees add Brown and love to see Weaver in the NL where other pitchers get to throw at him
