  1. I don't know the details --- i don't know about insurance length -- it could be that over a given period of time, insurance just isn't cost effective anymore... But look at Baltimore last year they were still paying Albert Belle....
  2. I don't think throwing too much money at Ponson is going to be the answer to our problems...He had one "good" year and that was manufactured--- he had only one victory vs. a playoff team.... Suppan looks like he's gonig to fall to us... Suppan = Garland.. thier numbers are very similar....he had his best year statistically last year.. but he had a 5.56 ERA his last 10 games when he was in the AL... and a 3.5 ERA in the NL.. winning a career high 13 games...The one real positive is he's a horse pitching 200+ innings the last 5 years... He should be cheap and therefore I think you'll hear his name around here after the winter meetings.
  3. True, while I'm not one who's jumping ship and calling the 04 season a wash already... There is certainly an opportunity to really put this organization in a good position rather quickly... I think we can easily put a winning product out on the field this year... I think we have more players than we did in the 2000 season... The type of players we need to fill are the Tony G.'s and Herbert Perry's.. Those were two non-glamorous TB castoffs who wee wicked up late. There's no way we would have had the season we did that year without them...
  4. I never heard the plug for Ozzie but, In all honesty, the guy is not a good public speaker. He would hardly translate well over the radio.
  5. It confounds me when a ranked team -- one thats comprised of elite players -- acts like they have never seen zone defense before. Last year Syracuse tore through the NCAA Tournament using exclusively a zone defence and destroyed three straight ranked teams from the big 12.... I could run the point and break a zone defense.... IT's THE DEFENSE YOU USE WHEN YOU HAVE INFERIOR ATHLETES. Any team that Loses a game simply because they look confused when faced with 5 guys only guarding a spot on the floor should automatically be dropped from the top 25.
  6. Closer is the most over-rated postition in baseball... Give a serviceable pitcher enough chances and he'll accumulate about 40 saves per year... It doesn't take much. See Rocky Biddle
  7. Why did we want this guy??? He's a Lefty reliever and he's not even as good as Marte. PLus we still have Wunch and Schoey. I'm glad we didn't waste any money...
  8. First of all, PUT DOWN YOUR CRACK PIPE. then realize Oaklands GM is Billy Beane, HE'S NOT STUPID. He doesn't even have as much money as us, So what makes you think he is willing to add $10 MIL to get the 3rd worst GIDP man in Baseball.
  9. Because we're not rebuilding... We may be stuck in purgatory, but we're not rebuilding.
  10. That's ashamed i really enjoyed his music. Oh wait.... you mean the guy with the big ears and the bow tie.... I don't think he could play music.
  11. The guy was 10-4 on June 20th last year...but finished 12-15..Do i hear another White Sox incentive-based-contract-offer
  12. I was thinking the same thing as jason... Though, I didn't think he would get that much money.... His past performance screams incentive based contract.
  13. Would the royals have signed sully if we had bothered to offer the guy arbitration. I don't know??
  14. I just wanted to make sure that the above post was given the proper attention.. I think this shows that In his "breakout" year Ponson was in fact facing inferior opponent in a majority of his wins. Someone in the Baltimore Organization was pretty smart.
  15. Good-- He was not a good fit for this team
  16. I thought about Ponson BUDDEY Ponson's wins before the trade... 4/10 @ Tampa Bay vs. S. Parris -- 7IP 8H 3R 2ER 0BB 5K -- Run Support=4 4/27 Tampa Bay vs. J. Appier -- 6.1IP 9H 4R 3ER 2BB 3K -- RS=8 7/25 NYY vs. R. Clemens -- 8.2IP 6H 3R 3ER 3BB 5K -- RS=5 In his 14 wins before the trade deadline Ponson beat 3 pitchers with a winning record. (R. hernandez- 7-5, C. Lewis- 10-9, R. Clemens 17-9) He beat only One playoff team despite playing in a division that has 2 playoff teams. His run support durring those wins was 6.92 -- (I don't think i calculated that right... I used runs during the whole game... I think it should be run while he was pitching.. but i'm to lazy to fix it) A more telling Stat is that ALL of his losses came against playoff teams, or US.He lost to (E. Loiza, B. Colon, J. Burkett, Greg Maddux, A. Pettite, B. Radke) All of whom had winning records...he can't win a when it counts. He's no better than a number 3 pitcher at best...and I wouldn't want to have him pitching for me in a must win situation. as evidenced by his performance in SF.
  17. Why are people so down on JG??? the Kid just turned 24. and the guy everyone is pinning thier hopes on(Ponson), now that Colon isn't an option, is only marginally better. Ponson is a career sub .500 pitcher.. has had only two years where he posted more than 10 wins. And people within his own organization(orioles) last year admitted to pitching him versus lesser pitchers/opponents to boost his win total and make him more marketable to a trade. The fact that you don't hear the orioles in the running for Ponson should say something about him. They have enough money to throw around. Ponson has a lifetime ERA of 4.54 while Garlands is 4.60. JG is 3 years younger and cheaper.
  18. Ah... I sense that this could be a classic post... always retuning on every sox winning or losing streak... or if we sign a player, make a trade, don't make a trade... Today has been a pretty negative day around this board. I don't know why?? WE AREN'T THE YANKEES. WE CAN NOT BUY THE WORLD SERIES. Which the Yankees have shown, the past 3 years, is more difficult than it seems. The last two World Champions have had relatively low payrolls. The twins continually whip are buts with low-payroll teams. Oakland has made the playoffs the last 4 years with almost the lowest payroll in baseball. The Mets, Dodgers, and Rangers all spent over $100 MIL to play golf in October. Baseball requires a shrewd GM more than any other sport. No one will out spend the yankees. Boston may try, but NY will counter. It's dumb to even try. The only hope is to outsmart them all.
  19. i don't think we should put Sully on that list... He wasn't offered Arbitration so we can't negotiate with him until ??? .... that means he's gone
  20. If the White Sox Organization - whoever it may be - Sits down and tells DW : This is the direction we're headed. You really showed you could help us out of the pen last year. We really believe you have the ability to be a lights-out reliever You're the guy we're going to look for to get us out of jams. Then I think DW would step-up to the plate, and really make the most of his role.
  21. Everything I have ever read/heard about Danny Wright as he was headed up our farm system, was a glowing review of his work ethic and abilty to get guys out without the best stuff. This kid should be able to figure things out. I see him as a pen guy and once DW accepts that -- he want's to be a starter-- He can become a great reliever.
