Very happy for Quintana. That says it all IMO.

07/02 GDT Sox at Astros
I hate to let everybody in on a secret but right now Sale is MVP of the league. He's 14-2 and the Sox are .500. WIthout him the Sox are total crap. That's the definition of most VALUABLE player, folks. He is the difference between average team and horses***.

Crain's Business Story on Attendence...
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 04:45 AM) Live example. Got 3 comp tickets to the Kane county Cougars game on Friday night. Paid the $5 for parking. Spent $5 in the kids zone. Bought a snow cone for the kid and the wife got a churro. Total amount spent was $20. Daughter caught a foul ball, her first ever. Fixed costs vs variable costs. The Cougars got $20 from me and it didn't cost them anything to do it. Yes and you could have easily spent a lot more than that. You didn't buy any food/drink for yourself. No beers. No Cokes for anybody.

Crain's Business Story on Attendence...
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:43 PM) Sox sell tickets at $7 almost every game except Sunday's, where they have $5 tickets. That's very smart marketing. The possibility of a Sox sellout is limited to games versus the Cubs. No other games will ever be sold out, except playoff games. So when you are certain there will be no more than 23,000 on hand like most games, why not market the hell out of the fact you can go to a game for 5 or 7 bucks a head. Fill as many of the nosebleed seats as you can and those folks will be paying for parking still and probably buying lotsa goods for the family once in the stadium. It's a win/win situation. I'd definitely try to get the word out about the 5 dollar tickets. So much cheaper than a movie.

2016 Republican Thread
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 08:23 PM) You seem to forget that the President is elected to a four year term. Obviously I'm assuming the Democratic candidate's second term is assured. The map of Democratic and Republican states won't ever fluctuate much and an incumbent like Hillary is assured both terms.

Parents Stuck With Their Kids
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 01:34 PM) You're conflating the idea of on the job training exchange for work and working for free on something that's not career related. That's apples and oranges. People are often willing to do free internships because the job experience is more valuable to them long term than a simple paycheck. I would agree if this "internship" was flipping burgers at McDonald's, but internships aren't utilized for such positions. They're utilized in specific fields of study where you can get exposure to everyday life on the job, IE, real world experience for a job that will someday require real world experience. There is a reason so many college grads cannot find work as easily as they thought they could...most jobs in my industry require experience, which just happens to be something college kids do not have much of, if any at all. Now, if only there was a way they could have some experience...oh, that's right...they could! It's called internships. Some pay, some do not...but it's still up to the individual to CHOOSE this path. Not everything in life is about today...sometimes it's about tomorrow, and planning ahead. I wonder how many companies that have an unpaid internship policy are paying their CEO's mega million dollar salaries. I understand many of you are pro-company on this issue, I'm just saying it's in general a sleazy practice if that's the right word. Obviously not in all instances. I am pretty sure many schools are in on this scam and do not allow the class credit if the internship is paid. We're not sharing the wealth much in America anymore, even on this smaller scale. I think it all adds up to making the world a lousier place.

Airport Security
Stuff like this should not happen in a civilized society. TSA should have somebody with common sense patrolling the area. To beat up a teenage girl with brain cancer is horrifying. And the family is only suing for 100,000 bucks. Hopefully the jury will award them a lot more. Get your act together, government. Some apologists on here will say the girl/parents deserved it. She might have had a bomb on her, etc. Again, I ask for common sense. This kid could have died. I wonder how many elderly people have been tackled. http://reason.com/blog/2016/07/01/tsa-assa...an-returning-ho

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 11:24 PM) That is actually the correct thread for whining about Hillary, not this one, as has been pointed out to you many times. Why? That's the Republican thread? It's a Democratic problem (I mean it should be if not swept under the rug, I mean the tarmac). This meeting with Bill Clinton is one of the sleaziest things I've ever heard of. My gosh. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 12:28 AM) Even the Republicans, at this point, probably just want Trump to go away, the election to be over and the bleeding at the House/Senate level contained. Of course Republicans wish Trump would go away. I've yet to meet a real Trump supporter. Most kind of like his attitude of being non P.C., but it's not like he's turning the PC world around with his brashness. People are still getting in trouble for saying PC stuff all the time. Like nobody dared criticize that guy at the BET awards for hijacking the show ripping whites.

The Second Wildcard
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 12:10 AM) Indians' longest winning streak in franchise history (tied with 1951 team, and another in the 1940's). Ryan Goins pitched the 18th and escaped from a bases loaded situation with a DP ball....threw 90. Barney gave up the homer on an 85-86 MPH "fastball." Bauer was supposed to start tomorrow's day game but pitched 5 shutout innings so they'll have to find another starter to go against All-Star Estrada (probably will be the end of their winning streak). Pillar made a gave-saving catch. Phillies blew two bases-loaded situations in the middle innings against Tomlin. Indians had numerous chances in extra innings. They used every single reliever except for closer Cody Allen, who wasn't available. Didn't we help turn the Indians' season around? I forget now but didn't the Sox lay down and die and get swept that directly helped them right their .500ish ship?

July 1st, 2016 - Chicago White Sox vs. Huston Astros - 7:10
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 03:14 AM) I shocked myself too. But, I take that as a compliment I'm serious when I call you the best fan ever. WIsh I could be like El Rockin. Optimistic and not bitter. QUOTE (Scoots @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 03:16 AM) This team just looks lost and dead offensively. No consistency. I want them to win as much as anyone else, but I think it's time to start being realistic. This team will probably float around .500 for the rest of the season. Rinse repeat of last season. Team will hang around .500 then hit a helluva tailspin after the break and dat will be dat. I'd say team upside: .500. Possible downside: As many as 8-10 under .500.

July 1st, 2016 - Chicago White Sox vs. Huston Astros - 7:10
I still can't believe Hawk is only doing road games. Man, he's a glutton for punishment. Even good teams tend to play .500 at best on the road. And even bad teams have some exciting memorable moments at home. Our team is built to have a lot of anemic road efforts. And with a shaky bullpen even the games you lead turn into sloppy adventures.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 03:04 AM) See this too often with our bullpen guys. We are trailing but still in it but they give up a couple extra runs Glad there's one part of the team that even ElRockin calls out. The best fan in Sox history agrees our pen blows.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 02:55 AM) What was that bat flip by Valbuena all about That should be a fineable offense. WTF. A bat flip? I was shocked. QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 02:57 AM) Sox look like they just want to get back to the hotel and crash. Challenging will just delay the inevitable shut out anyway I guess. Too many games like that in the Robin era. The bats are dead; the team is dead. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 03:00 AM) Give it up Why Elrockin? Robin definitely should have challenged that. It was close and a helluva effort by Saladino. p.s. Lawrie is so much better than Beckham. I will give him credit. he does try pretty hard.

2016 Democratic Thread
Trouble for Hillary (I hope): Didn't want to put in Republican thread even though Caufield started it in there. ... She needs to just go away. And by saying that it doesn't mean I support Trump. I just don't want a so obvious wheeler and dealer, entitled person like Hillary in the White House. A meeting on a plane??? With the AG? Cmon Hillary supporters, explain this one. Oh I know ... it was nothing. They wanted to chat about their grandkids. Yeah in a public airport on a fricking plane. I'm sure that didn't inconvenience anybody as they chuckled about getting Hillary off scot free in the email case. Crooked politics!! https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/loretta-...-101500028.html

2016 Republican Thread
You can't make this stuff up, folks. From the unbiased attorney general case ... "What on earth were you thinking?” Capehart asked Lynch of her meeting with the former president. Lynch said the meeting at the Phoenix airport was primarily social and that the email inquiry was not discussed. She said they talked about Clinton’s grandchildren. “I certainly wouldn’t do it again, because I think it has cast a shadow over what it should not, over what it will not touch,” Lynch said, adding that the questions over the Justice Department’s integrity have been “painful.” Great: "I wouldn't do it again" then why the hell did you do it in the first place?? We all know why. Cause politics is all about deals and being corrupt as hell. Say what you want about baseball: They pretty much cleaned up the steroid thing when almost all players were using. Can politics ever become clean?? I'm not betting on it with Hillary being given an unobstructed path to the White House for eight fricking years.

Rick Hahn
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 06:14 AM) Congrats to Rick Hahn for providing Robin Ventura one of the worst bullpens (minus the back end of Jones and Robertson) in recent Sox memory...at least back to 2007. 2014, if you want to go there...but nothing was expected of that team, at all. Jones is OK, but even he has sucked on occasion. Not flaming him, he's acceptable so far with potential to be really good they tell me. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 02:30 PM) Yeah, at the beginning of the year the pen was on fire. Then Petricka went down. Then Albers lost it. Then Putnam went down. Kinda hard to come through that unscathed. This is where I disagree. I never liked any of those 3. Albers had one of the great stretches ever but then almost single handedly blew our great 23-10 start. Putnam reeks. Petricka stinks.

2016 Republican Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 08:11 PM) Where is Greg to assume now that Hillary's going down with the AG officially stepping out of the way...? I'm so fed up with politics and the corruption. So the AG meets with Bill Clinton on the tarmac? "Wink wink she's not going to be indicted is she, AG?" It's all so crooked and there are no options for an upstanding individual being President this time with Hillary and Trump the candidates. Wheelin and dealin. My ultimate goal would be to indict Hillary and get her out of the way; promote Bernie to candidate; have Trump get passed by at the convention by Kasisch, McCain or somebody and have Bernie or McCain win. We can deal with Bernie's socialist side later. He seems the one candidate who is not a crook.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 05:32 PM) "keeps it up" has to be at least 1.5 full seasons. Yes, there's just no way of telling if he's going to be great or not. So far he's been great except for the walks. Once he hits a slump, that's not going to help any.

Parents Stuck With Their Kids
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 03:43 PM) I agree with this. Real world experience is so much more valuable than classroom experience. When I got my first IT job I learned more in my first 6 months there than I ever did in any of my classes. I'm sure a lot of other careers are similair. It's just not possible to duplicate the real world in a classroom setting. I understand what many of you like ptatc is saying. So it costs the hospitals money? Well don't have interns then. I know I'm inflexible on my opinion here, but I think a place of business that expects interns to report for duty and do actual work should pay the interns some money. It doesn't have to be more than minimum wage by a dollar or two, but don't have an internship program if you don't pay anything. The fact you get a handful of credit hours is worth something, yes it is. I just think in a great country like America everybody who does work for a company that actually benefits the company should make a few cents doing it. I mean I worked for a golf course several summers as a high school and college kid. They could have refused to pay me and instead given me all the free golf and swimming my heart desired. If I loved golf I guess I probably would do it, but it would be wrong of the golf course even though that's worth a lot of money in green fees. What free golf is is a nice perk for employees but thankfully they paid me and I got to keep my tips, too.

2016 AL Central catch-all thread
No offense to Robin, but I consider Francona and Maddon special managers who can make a difference. Look at the Indians and the Cubs. I also considered Leyland special and remember how Detroit dominated under him. Now Yost and Ventura are the buffoons in the division so to speak. Minnie just has no talent at all. You have to admit it'd be neat to at least try with a genius of a manager and see if that would change things for the Sox. I loved Ozzie but even he was unproven. How bout our next manager be a proven genius! How bout the Yankee manager. He should be about ready to move on. He's been there too long in this day and age of what have you done for me lately?
