  1. QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 12:17 AM) Our defense is already bad enough. It would have to be a pretty big haul before I'd trade him. This is what I was thinking. If Sox trade him, they are in major rebuilding mode no matter what they are telling us fans.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 08:49 PM) I totally disagree with this. This roster is 2 good relievers away from still being 5 games under .500 in my eyes. I'd say five to 10 under .500 depending on how the season goes.
  3. I'm a Republican, but I don't like Republicans anymore. I wonder what I should be. I wonder if a lot of people are like me in that regard. It's an embarrassing party. I think Obama was a horrific, do nothing president BTW. It's like he's afraid to lead for some reason. I also simply abhor Hilly. So I'm definitely not a Demo.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 06:34 PM) I think it is pretty obvious that Hahn is not going to solve this puzzle exclusively by way of free agency. I definitely see the SOX adding a bat (one of: Markakis, Cruz, VMart or Rasmus), hopefully a mid/back rotation RHP and at least a few bullpen pieces. But I think the SOX biggest splash will be picking up a big contract via trade. Carlos Gonzalez has been mentioned. I like the idea, but as others have mentioned, the Rox probably value him more than the remaining dollars on his contract ($53/3 years), and I don't see the SOX giving up much in the way of talent if they foot the whole bill, which leaves a trade rather far-fetched. Another, probably more realistic option, would be Carl Crawford - who obviously is a guy the SOX have targeted in the past. Crawford clearly isn't the player he once was, but he still fills a need for this ballclub, that is - left handed bat that you can slot anywhere in the lineup, still play decent OF. With three years and $62.25M left on his contract, the Dodgers would have to send back a nice chunk of change to even get the conversation going. Other names that have been thrown around these parts: Miguel Montero - 3 years and $40M left on his contract. Has regressed since his prime, but is definitely an upgrade over Flowers. Jason Castro - I really wanted him last offseason, but 2014 was a flop. Maybe the price has dropped significantly, and with the Astros having just acquired Hank Conger, maybe the door is open. Josh Hamilton - Is Hamilton done? Probably not. Is he worth the $89M he is due over the next three years? Definitely not. Which means he can probably be had. Look, the SOX have a ton of money to spend, and Hamilton may be worth kicking the tires on. The Halos need to kick is some major $$$. Any other realistic or off-the-wall ideas as we all patiently wait for the first real SOX domino to fall? The Angles would have to pay 22 million of the Hamilton contract for the Sox to bite and that obviously won't happen. They're stuck with him and Pujols like the Sox were stuck with Dunn. Someone's going to be stuck with Victor when he declines as well. And Shields. Etc.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) The way it is now, you have a .500 roster, but can win one extra game a month, you are right there. This is where I rarely disagree with Dick Allen. This roster is not a .500 roster. Far from that.
  6. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 10:09 PM) Pretty hilarious...Astros fan on mlbtraderumors saying it would cost Jose Abreu or Chris Sale because " there's nobody on that team anybody wants" It's sort of true. Aside from Abreu, Sale and Q who on the Sox is desirable? Out of the everyday players, maybe Lexi. Sox fans like Lexi, A. Garcia and Eaton, but are they really guys teams want? They can definitely do without those guys.
  7. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 06:36 PM) If Hillary decides to run, I don't think the Republicans can do enough in two years to stop her. She's just way too popular. I still say her best strategy would be to hardly campaign at all. I don't know how "likeable" she really is when she gets out on the trail. Yes she is popular. The concept of Hillary is popular. Strong woman with the last name "Clinton." First woman president. But her actual ability can certainly be questioned and her likeability I contend is not that great. Yes, she will win, cause the Democrats are never going to lose again in terms of the highest office, but she shouldn't tempt fate so to speak and make herself too available to the public lest she do something majorly stupid. I think she could win without campaigning to tell you the truth.
  8. I have two comments ... 1.) Have any of you followed Brownback's career and how he's purposely s*** on the people of Kansas? I want to ask how in the hell people could re-elect him. Seriously, if you follow him at all, please comment on this for me. He has been the worst "public official" in terms of helping his people that I've ever come across, cept for those who are corrupt like Blago. 2.) Why isn't marijuana legal everywhere? With all the people in pain, people who don't want to drink their pain away, why isn't this "drug" legal? I mean, seriously.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 03:16 PM) I am one of the few who is not sold on Noesi. I'm not sold on him either. As far as Victor, aren't we arguing a moot point? Has there been any shred of evidence the Sox would pay that kind of money after the Dunn fiasco? Any credible media mentions at all?
  10. This is a prime example of a "Coop will fix him" guy on the other side of the spectrum. Now supposedly ballplayers don't listen to hitting coaches much, but this is another "change of scenery" guy who might save his career or might not. He was a sixth rounder instead of a Beckham first rounder, but this is another guy Sox are taking a flier on. It's interesting he was a big league starter two years ago. Like Beckham now, this is Shuck's last chance so maybe he'll work hard and excel. Sox appear to have their fourth outfielder. He'll make the team.
  11. Greg just broke the tie. Yeah I'm a fuddy duddy regarding Vic.
  12. LOL Sam Brownback wins. My god, what a state I live in. Maybe that bastard in the bathroom was right. I guess I did waste my time voting today. Oh well, at least I felt damn powerful when I voted against Brownback and for the police station they want to raise taxes for. I guess now they'll pass the tax hike for the police campus here and I'll probably get arrested for jaywalking or going five miles over the limit after voting for the cops.
  13. Odd scene last night. Some 30 something kook in the bathroom stall area at Allen Fieldhouse was yelling at a guy. "You are going to vote tomorrow? Are you serious? In Douglas County? I hope you know you are wasting your time! Total waste of time. I hope you know that." And he kept railing at the guy, somewhat like he wanted a response so he could slug him. I don't know if the 2 knew each other or not. I almost said something to the asshole, like "Maybe he votes cause it's his civic duty; maybe cause it makes him feel good." But I figured the guy might hit me. Don't understand why an American is against voting. Again, he was a fairly young guy. It almost seemed like he wanted somebody to say something to him.
  14. He did look like he kicked that fan on purpose. Weird. He was pretty good in 2013 then fell off the map.
  15. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 30, 2014 -> 05:07 PM) NCAA should throw the book at UNC This is from a beat writer in Hartford, so a lot of this is how it relates to UConn, but he makes good points. The NCAA needs to throw the hammer down on this one You have an office assistant basically asking what a player needs on a paper to be eligible. If the player needed a D, she gave him a C- or D. Blatant academic fraud. North Carolina for years has prided itself on being one of the top state universities in the country. If the NCAA doesn't level UNC how can it level anybody else again? I think they should see if any players on the UNC national title team would have been ineligible without the unearned grades from that renegade instructor. If so, the title should be stripped and the NCAA should demand UNC take down the banner. If UNC refuses, they should say, "fine, you now get the death penalty."
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 07:38 PM) Jim Bowden ‏@JimBowden_ESPN 2m2 minutes ago Joe Maddon’s 5-year $25 million dollar deal with the Cubs is also loaded with incentive bonuses and an opt clause according to a club source Five million a year is not that much really. College basketball coaches at the elite programs are making as much or more than that. Ditto college football. And this is the pros, the national pastime.
  17. Please agree with me or talk me off the ledge. ... I'm SO f***ING frustrated with these elections. First of all, Brownback is a historically bad candidate and must go. But second, I am listening to all the ads and all the Republican candidates here are running on is "we must stop Obama and his policies. Help us stop him." Now, I am just sick and tired of this non sequitir. OK ... everybody hates Obama and despises his policies and what he's done to the USA. Fine. But you know and I know if he could run for president again, he'd win in a landslide. So how does this make any sense?? Republican candidates know they can win by distancing themselves from The Big O. Yet we Americans would re-elect Obama again if we could in a couple years. How do you explain this s***? Maybe the USA really truly will have a 25 year great depression like the email I just received. We probably deserve it if anybody does.
  18. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 12:11 PM) That, their fans elitist attitudes, and the fact they play by different rules. The multiplier helps but not as much as people think. It's like the Public League for basketball. What do you mean diffrent rules? Better weight rooms and stuff?
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) I found this incredibly boring. I just don't see how he does it with the wind. You just figure he'd plunge to his death after a gust.
  20. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) So you think if we add Victor Martinez and he puts up a wRC+ of 130 we'll only be 2.5 games better next year? I agree he won't make much of a difference alone. Right now this team is poorly constructed. A few stars but horrible defense, historically bad bullpen and two good starting pitchers won't cut it.
  21. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 01:34 PM) Every time a Catholic League team loses in the playoffs, an angel gets its wings. Wish Stevenson lost as well. Why do u hate the Catholic League? Cause we recruit?
  22. I agree with those of you who say we'll get this guy. Here's the "problem" -- once again, it's going to be 3-4 years before this guys sniffs the majors. As we "rebuild," I see it as too slow a rebuild. We can't waste Sale and Abreu much more much longer. But if we sign this guy, again, we're doing so with dividends to not pay off for 3-4 years.
  23. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 01:37 AM) Supposedly VMart is looking for a 4 year deal with a contender and at 36, I believe it. VMart alone does not make the Sox a contender which means the Sox would need to get holes filled first so the Sox can go to VMart and show how they have taken steps to make the team better and tell VMart that he's the finishing touch to a Sox contender. I cannot stress this enough, do not get your hopes up Sox fans. Stop believing what idiots like Levine have written. DH is only one of the holes to fill on the Sox along with LF, two or maybe even three bullpen spots, 2B , possibly a starting pitcher and a case could be made for a defensive upgrade at 3B. That's a lot of holes to fill in one off season and a very hard sell to VMart. Sorry, I just don't see VMart being interested and that doesn't include the love spat between he and Sale. I don't see either side being interested. Seriously, after the Dunn fiasco can anybody see the Sox giving Martinez what he wants? There's no way the Sox pony up for four years, 20 million a year. I'll shut up and not post this anymore if any of you in the know comment on, not whether this is smart or not to sign him, but IF there's a chance in hell the Sox would ever sign an old guy to that kind of contract again?? Just agree or disagree with my following assertion: "There is no way in hell the Sox will even considering entering the bidding war at 15 mill and up a year for four years for Martinez."
  24. I've decided the Sox are not the type of team to give 15-20 million for four years to a guy as old as Victor. I see no way the Sox acquire him; it's not going to happen. I think the Sox are more apt to sign a guy like Billy Butler on the cheap. He "might" have 2-3 good years left in him and might like finally being in a hitters park. More than anything, I stress the "cheap" part. He wants to return to KC but if the Sox show real love, they could get him.
  25. He definitely is Mr. Slappy. He's not a great fielder. I don't think he's the answer. His average went up about 20 points when he went 11 for 12 versus the Sox. I'd pass.
