QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 16, 2014 -> 01:45 AM) I guess we can give the Paulino acquisition a thumbs-down, but that was a lot less money wasted than on Downs. Next, Matt Davidson needs to step it up in the next two months though, or the doubters are going to become louder. That said, it's not like Addison Reed on this current team would have meant more than 1 or 2 games. Certainly not enough to keep us at the same pace as the Tigers, who look to run away with the division unless the Royals can somehow get on an extended hot streak. Finally, Rios/L.Garcia, while wise at the time...it's hard to look at that as anything more than a salary dump. It's not like Garcia was ever projected to be a sure-fire starting major league middle infielder due to concerns about his hit tool. Exactly on the salary dump regarding Rios. L. Garcia looks like one of the worst hitters around, but I'll never criticize it cause we got rid of Rios. (I can't believe Sox are already 10 out in the loss column. Division race for Sox is ova. I don't know how anybody else could think otherwise).

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 14, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) You really need to get out of Kansas once in a while Dorothy. I actually travel quite a bit. But last rode a bus in Philly about 10 years ago.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 15, 2014 -> 02:50 AM) So, now he will sign with Oakland/Boston/St. Louis, hit .330 and end up the World Series MVP? Great post. Like somebody else said, get ready for 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs first time he faces the Sox.

White Sox at Athletics - 5/14 - 2:35 - CSN - Game 3 of 3

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 14, 2014 -> 11:20 PM) I like Hahn's approach to the pen, it's for the most part same as KW, you don't pay for "proven" anything cause some random dude like belly is way cheaper and can give you just the same production. Unless of course you have an elite team on paper and you have money to burn, it's not worth it to spend on the pen. I disagree fully. Bullpens are HUGE to a team's success and ours has sucked the last several years. -
Everybody assumes Hoiberg will leave Iowa State for NBA. He makes a lot of money and has that heart problem. Also a few little kids. My guess is he will stay in college though I don't know anything about the guy except he had a heart problem. Recruiting may be a hassle at Iowa State but he seems to be doing pretty well in that regard, taking advantage of the current transfer epidemic, etc.

Beckham feels no added pressure from Semien/Johnson
greg775 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 14, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) BS. Semien was actually called a "professional hitter" by a Beckham hating mouth breather. People were disregarding he leads the league in striking out, pointing out his taking pitches helps the rest of the offense. Well his 4 strikeouts last night, helped the team pound out 4 hits. His flaws ignored. Just get rid of Beckham. Well, Semien isn't as good as Beckham. I personally wanted to believe Semien was great thanks to his clutch hits. It's partly from being jaded for so many years with the lousy hitting of Beckham. I wouldn't lose any sleep if Semien is sent down or stinks. In fact, I kind of expect him to also be a bust. Compared to Beckham though, yes, I'd rather Semien take all Gordo's at bats. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 14, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) He will have no problem finding a job. He's very fortunate as to where he was drafted. If Luke Hochevar hadn't gotten hurt he also would never have had trouble finding a job. High draft picks. It's like a top quarterback pick in the draft. It takes a while for teams to finally kick him out of football for good even if he's rotten. I mean, Dick Allen, tell me why anybody would pay Beckham more than 3-4 million a year down the road? His defense? Fine it's pretty good, but as they say, you can always find a second baseman somewhere. Even now in his 80 at bats he has six RBIs and is hitting .240 with a lousy on base percentage. He's average at best so I guess yes he'll always have a job. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 14, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) It's not just gas prices for that trip. In a modern, solid-transit city like Chicago, if gas prices rise, then many people simply will not own automobiles at all. Census data say that 29% of the households in Chicago did not own a car in the year 2000 when gas prices were fairly low; that number has almost certainly increased since then. I did not know that. That must be weird to have to take the bus anywhere you need to go.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:23 PM) And there it is, where was my post before the season started about him never playing a game with the Sox? Good call. I wish I'd seen it so I could have relaxed. Not a Kepp fan. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:26 PM) There has to be more to this story, for JR to eat rest of contract Jeff had to rub somebody the wrong way. White Sox activated INF Jeff Keppinger from the 15-day disabled list; designated him for assignment. Keppinger is making $4 million this season and is set to make $4.5 million in 2015, so the White Sox are eating a lot of money with this move. The veteran infielder has dealt with shoulder issues since the beginning of last season and the Pale Hose might be convinced that he was never going to be healthy enough again to contribute. They now have an open spot on their 40-man roster. Per Rotoworld He rubbed fans the wrong way with his performance. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) It was nice enough of him to tweet that. I don't understand why people have to rip on him in response. The internet gives a lot of people a lot of courage. Exactly. It was a classy tweet. The anonymous Internet is a joke. Take a look at the comments on human interest stories on Yahoo. They are disgusting. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 14, 2014 -> 06:05 PM) You got to think some team would be willing to take on Keppinger for $500k/season. Ask for nothing in return and hope you can recoup $1M of his remaining salary. I'd consider that a win at this point. Acquiring him was a panic move, trying to acquire an alleged good on-base guy. The move failed so Jerry's pocketbook takes a slight hit re. Kepp. I doubt he DFA's anybody else making a decent buck. This one was needed cause there was no reason to have Kepp on the team if he wasn't starting and it would have been buzzkill to start him. I guess he could have replaced Beckham who is hitting .240 with six RBI in 75 at bats.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread

How bout that situation at Oregon? Losing 3 scholarship players! Reading the police report on the rape, it was troubling. The 3 guys brought the college woman into a bathroom for sex at a party, then later they took a cab to her apartment and took her to the bedroom. The 3 guys will not be charged but were kicked out of school. Idiots. I feel for the woman. On the court ... do you guys think Cliff Alexander will be an immediate star at Kansas and b.) do you think he's a certain one and done? -
I see with Van Gundy deal the NBA is starting to pay huge bucks to coaches again. 7 mill a year. Hmmm. Hey I have a question. There's talk in this college town that Bill Self will inevitably leave for the NBA, likely to coach the Thunder or Spurs. From afar, do you think a.) any team would love to have Self for 6-7 mill a year (he makes 5 here) and b.) do you think he's a good NBA coaching prospect. Or c.) do you think he's just another blah coach who won one national title and will fail in the NBA? Just wondering what you all think of Bill Self and NBA. For instance if the Bulls hired him if Thibs left would you be happy or furious?

When are we gonna call Adam Dunn an elephant in the room. He's good for five home runs and 12 ribbies right now. Oooh. Such power. Such production. NOT.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ May 13, 2014 -> 10:16 PM) You're proof that the only people that still think this are the people that never actually go to the games. I have a buddy who got roughed up pretty good just two seasons ago after a game on the El. He was too scared to press charges. Fool. The thug will just rough up somebody else.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 14, 2014 -> 07:08 AM) Robin ripped the effort Sunday. He also keeps far more things in the clubhouse than any other manager. If you are going to rip him being at least a little accurate would help. He says something he is an idiot. He says nothing, he couldn't care less and needs to make an example out of someone, he is an idiot. Unfortunately there is no one available who could manage this team to the undefeated record it's talent clearly indicates it should be. One thing I did learn tonight, Soxtalk was right Robin was a fool not to pinch hit for Garcia last night with Semien or if the idiot didn't pinch run for Dunn when he didn't have to, Sierra. No way they would have struck out in that situation. So what if they were 0-7 with 7 strikeouts tonight. You are probably right about Semien. He got some clutch hits this year but he's probably yet another Sox bust. As far as Robin, I think you make good points. I just think the timing was weird. It's like he made a conscious effort this year to be more of a stern manager and I think he jumped the gun a bit. I think only DeAza deserved to be benched or maybe called out. Oh well, if Viciedo, Abreu, Lexi and Flowers (yes Flowers) aren't hitting at the same time, we're f***ed and going to lose most games. Of course it would help GREATLY if Eaton was healthy. You guys laughed at my love of Rowand, but I'm thinking Eaton is the same type of gutsy catalyst through his example. p.s. Adam Dunn is stuck on five home runs with a whopping 12 RBIs. Laughably bad. Please please end the Adam Dunn era soon. It was an era known for unabashed losing.
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:51 AM) Terrible effort all around. Not that it matters, but Robin picked a weird time to call out the team the other day. Why didn't he just call out DeAza? DeAza is who he was talking about. Maybe he sensed some long losing streak and tried to stem it off before it began spiraling out of control. I guess I can't fault him for that but I'd rather have seen him just blast DeAza.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:43 AM) Let's just hope this season doesn't totally get away from the Sox in the next two weeks. The attendance numbers/revenues are going to start to have a bit of an effect on who we can sign in the off-season, so it would be nice to stay in the wild card race until at least the trading deadline. Nobody cares about the wild card. We're not going to beat those teams out and fans know it. Detroit has already buried the Sox in the loss column. I'm fully expecting the draftniks on this board to be rooting for losses before very long. Certainly by the end of May.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 14, 2014 -> 05:22 AM) Toronto When a good team DFA's a player you have to figure he's probably no good.

Was this Sierra guy DFA by somebody?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:15 AM) Think about it, you have playing tonight: - two pitchers in Carroll and Francisco that belong in the minors - leadoff hitter in Semien that should be in AAA - Konerko who probably should be retired - Sierra should be in the minors - Garcia should be 25th man, at best, on a roster Given the injuries to 4 of the main Sox performers (Sale, Avi, Jones, Eaton), this is a roster that would lose 100 games. Yes, I'm thinking this team may lose a lot of baseball games and battle for the No. 2 draft pick before it's ova. Should be interesting to see what happens to Sale the rest of the season.
-
This Francisco guy is washed up. Cooper will be earning his money trying to get some innings out of some of these stiffs in our bullpen.
-
Only reason to keep watching is to see L. Garcia pitch tonight.
-
Sierra ... just another guy who has to go. Too bad some of those minor league outfielders that were high draft picks aren't ready.
-
Sox really stink right now. The A's are in a different league than the Sox. I know we've had injuries, so I'm not flaming, but we certainly are starting to play to preseason expectations.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 14, 2014 -> 03:40 AM) 19 hits allowed in last 8.1 innings. I don't think he's going to be around much longer. He gawn soon. QUOTE (fathom @ May 14, 2014 -> 03:48 AM) Yay, more 2 out runs allowed. Well, Carroll will always have that Tampa victory to cherish. I was thinking the same thing. It's like when Humber threw the no hitter. Didn't he immediately suck after that? Carroll obviously is not a good prospect. Bye bye soon.
-
Marcus can't hit a fastball this series. Is he always weak on heat? I haven't watched a ton of games.
-
Poor Semien down 1-2 in the count.
