  1. cold winter another cold winter a really cold winter I could do this all day, but if you're on the left and/or for Kucinich I doubt it would change your mind, even if you could suddenly ice skate in your kitchen. This is not meant to bash anyone, just to strongly disagree with the Global Warming theory as it's taught. I didn't make any of this up. It was a period of very harsh winters. In recent years that has changed. I still think that the summer of 1955 remains the hottest summer on record in Chicago. Of course 1988 and 1995 are right up there too. Anyone know Tom Skilling?
  2. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 07:53 AM) Who told you that? I grew up during those decades, and I don't remember that being said. Not to say it wasn't, I just don't recall the discussion. From the mid 70s to the mid 80s North America had some of the coldest winters on record. In January and February of 1977 there was an especially vicious cold snap, with heavy snow. The city of Buffalo was marooned for about a week. December 1981, December 1983 and especially January 1985 were extremely cold. Many record cold readings from these times, especially January 1985 still stand. A seasonal cold front known as the Siberian Express was constantly in the news and on weather maps during that era. The winter temperature averages for many North American cities, including Chicago were ratcheted down in the early 80s. Many environmentalists in that era were warning that we were surely on the cusp of a new Ice Age. I have an old tape of a show narrated by none other than Leonard Nimoy which gives graphic warning of an impending Ice Age. Weather patterns change gradually over time. If we were about to freeze in the 70s and 80s, we're not about to turn into a hot house now. You can agree or not with me, like me or not as a poster, but I never try to BS folks. Not on the internet, and not in real life either. That was an era of extremely cold winters, and yes we were warned of an impending Ice Age. The Global Warming propaganda machine would make Joseph Goebbels jealous.
  3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 07:22 AM) A white supremecist named William White. You can't make stuff like this up. Some incidents bring out the best in people. This one seems to be bringing out the worst. Yes. They are no good guys in this incident. None.
  4. I just have one question. Were they right, wrong, or just kidding when they told me in the 70s and 80s that we were surely on the verge of a new Ice Age?
  5. Hope you have a fine celebration, and that things are progressing well for you.
  6. Pardon me if I don't fall all over myself in praise of Ken Burns. His Jazz documentary left many of us disappointed. Yes, he has talent. Yes he provides a depth to a subject that is rarely seen today. When you tackle mammoth projects like he does, you're sure to have your critics. Burns sometimes falls off the mark, and short of the mark while attempting to do things no one else will do.
  7. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) I think of an Amish man when I think of you. I don't know why. But an Amish man that I quite like. I mean, I like the Amish. Delightful, friendly people. And it doesn't hurt that you and I are often on the same page. We churn butter once or twice Living in an Amish paradise
  8. I look like Woody Allen if he had muscles. At least that's what I was told once.
  9. I guess ancient history doesn't matter anymore, only it isn't ancient history to me. I actually remember it.
  10. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 10:41 PM) What a perfect time to finally get to Johan. Not. I couldn't hate this team more if I tried. The Twins, Yanks, and Cubs in no particular order for me.
  11. QUOTE(WCSox @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 09:53 AM) Edited for accuracy The original post was more accurate, I'd say.
  12. The Pirates have one of the worst ownership groups in MLB. Unless there's a complete change of heart at the top, and the purse strings are opened considerably, this guy will have the same fate as Cam Bonifay and Dave Littlefield. Right now the Pirates have the best ball park, and little else going for them.
  13. There have been a few interruptions, but I go all the way back to Soxnet days. No icon status for me.
  14. October 4 is the anniversary, and yes it was quite the big deal way back then. One of the biggest things was that science and math were lagging behind in the US (sounds familiar). The whole moon landing thing was a come from way behind victory for the US. President Kennedy was a great inspiration for the US space program.
  15. Another violent crime committed by someone who shouldn't have been here in the first place.
  16. Floyd has pitched better of late, but with his track record, he's got a long way to go before winning some of us over. Contreras has pitched much better lately too. Is he ready to be the same guy he was from mid season 05 to mid season 06? Or is it all just a mirage for the two of them? There are so few dependable pitchers in today's game that it's hard to tell. Like I said before, it looks like Cooper got Floyd to make a slight change in his delivery. Does that mean Coop is going to be the same miracle guy he was in 05?
  17. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 08:27 AM) Was the taser necessary? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/10/12/...ain648859.shtml Yes, and a serious beat down too.
  18. I know $500 used to be worth a lot more than it is today, but still had to wonder about Kerr trying to pry an extra $500 from his bosses, and essentially losing his career over it.
  19. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 12:53 PM) They can shoot as high as they want, its a matter of what they can afford. With the amount of payroll they already have on the 2008 teams, they are going to have to have two to three guys in the starting line up making close to league minimum to make their budget work. They also are going to have to deal at least one of Contreras or Garland to make things work. Get used to seeing guys like Owens, Richar, and Fields, because they are going to be a necesity for the Sox in 2008, not matter what people want. If you're right then they'll be among the bottom feeders of baseball again.
  20. I want to know how the hell can anyone have anything to do with the Fed, let alone be boss of the thing, and call himself a "liberterian"? As for Greenspan, he gave some of the most confusing and convoluted speeches and pronouncements when he was the Chairman. He must have hired a real good ghostwriter for his sure to be best seller. I give his Chairmanship mixed grades, much of the current housing troubles could be laid at his doorstep. He was better than Paul Volcker, who almost single handedly destroyed the northern tier of Rust Belt states with his policies in the early 80s. I consider myself somewhat of a liberterian, and really don't care much for the Fed as an institution. Modern Presidents must know, that their economic policies are at the mercy of an all powerful Federal Reserve Board and its Chairman (or woman).
  21. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 14, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) Oh I agree. But its the typical, former whitesox love. Actually, it seems to me that many if not most Sox fans on message boards villify former Sox players, and applaud Kenny for getting rid of them. In the last four years I've liked a lot of his moves, and disliked some others. If Richar turns out to be a dud, and Iguchi thrives elsewhere for a few more years, the Sox have another big hole (actually crater) to fill. I already stated that I listed Richar as my favorite "prospect", but now despite the "small sample", I really don't expect much from him. For significant parts of this year Dye, Konerko, Pierzynski, Thome and yes Iguchi all struggled. You may add the injured Crede to that list. It looks to me, that as of the moment we have no better alternatives to any of those players, and to me that means trouble. It should be OK to argue the merits and demerits of cutting Iguchi loose. Especially now.
  22. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Sep 14, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) If prices were right the middle market towns in the midwest would flourish as was the case in the 60'sand 70's. The entertainment dollar is not spread as thin in these towns. South Beach or Joe Robie for a Marlin game? Baseball in the midwest in summer is what the game is all about not Yankee Pride, Red Sox Nation, or Loveable Losers. Off the top of my head from 1975-85 were there any better franchises than the Brewers, Cardinals, Pirates, Tigers, or Royals? Granted the Tigers are having a reinassance but the Cardinal owners seem to have shyied away from spending money and a Brewer or Royal run could kill that franchise. Hell the rollar coster that is the Twin organization could (as soon as next year when Hunter and Nathan are gone if something steller is found with trading Santana) fall back to the days of the late 90's. I hate the economics of baseball with a passion but I love a 1-0 game so I guess I am an exception to the rule. This chick hates the long ball. Great post.
  23. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 14, 2007 -> 10:47 AM) But yeah, you really can't sustain a run in Pittsburgh unless something significant changes in Pittsburgh. I do think, though, that once you start winning in Pittsburgh, the people will come, and if you coupled that with the owner opening his wallet a good deal, you could have a great franchise with the right man. That's true just about anywhere but Pittsburgh is definitely a baseball city -- not saying baseball's the predominant sport, not at all as the Steelers are and always will be king, but the people will absolutely turn out for Pirate games if they're not being fed garbage. I hope that day comes. I love Pittsburgh. Then you love incessant cloudiness. You're right about Pittsburgh. A unique city, with a quirky personality and a great sports tradition going way back. There are probably more great athletes in more sports from SW PA than any other part of the country. The names and the numbers are astounding.
  24. Colavito was supposed to provide some power to the hitting starved Sox in 67. Unfortunately he was near the end of the line.
  25. I still wish that Fisk could somehow get involved with the club.
