QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:09 AM) Are there any other laws besides rape that drunk people should be exempt from? Oh GMAB. That is so far from what he was talking about. :shakes head:

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) That came from one person exactly, but way to categorize that as "you all" It's different.

Watched Slumdog Millionaire last night for the first time. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 12:28 AM) Exactly. Konerko's is fake as ever but hilarious to read. Would you mind linking them?

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) That's going a little too far...I wasn't talking about actions on Earth...I'm talking about faith. I was given the opportunity to take it all in and come up with my own conclusions...and then, after all that, I go to wherever I'm going and find out I'm wrong and I'm punished??? Yeah, I can't and won't believe that. But isn't faith a conscious decision made? Isn't that an action, albeit a passive one? For hypothetical sakes, let's say the Hindus are right. Say we get reincarnated. Since no one here(to my knowledge) is Hindu we shouldn't count on coming back in a better state now should we?

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) Got a question of the most boring day of the year. But it is related to Buehrle (mods, feel free to break off into new thread, if needed). Is Mark Buehrle a Hall of Famer? OK, so he won't get to 300 wins or 3000 strikeouts and he's only been in the top 5 of Cy voting once... But, let me give you some stats off the top of my head: - Been more or less the #1 starter for the Sox since 2001 - Double digit wins in ever season he's been a starter - Lifetime ERA of 3.79 - More than 200 IPs in all but his first season, which was mostly as a reliever anyway - Top 10 in ERA 4 times - Won a World Series. - Been to 4 AS games - He is currently eighth all-time in wins and innings pitched by a pitcher in a White Sox uniform. - Started every season opener from 2002-2006, 2008-2009 - Threw a no-hitter I know his career obviously isn't over and a lot of things can happen, but let's say MB continues on his same pace until he retires. Here's why I ask...of course if you look at the pitchers that are currently or will shortly be in the Hall, MB doesn't stack up. BUT, how much cache does a player get for the little known stats? Also, the criteria is going to change. Do you think the Hall will look at the fact that he was the White Sox best pitcher for so long? Discuss. If Mark goes all Jamie Moyer on everyone (which looks like a long shot) and pitches till 40-42 then I think he'll win between 280-300 wins. If he does, yes. Otherwise he goes into the Hall of Very Good. Either way no one will ever wear #56 for the White Sox again

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:45 PM) That's quite possible but I don't think we can ever know. We can't. There is no actual proof of the existence, and it is impossible to prove a negative. It may even be the fact that b/c I want there to be something that makes me believe that there is (hence why I believe in so many conspiracy theories). I've taken philosophy classes and logic classes, and from my experience there is more logical theories for existence of something rather than non-existence of anything.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) It's just Pascal's Wager restated. The primary problem with the argument is that it assumes a binary state -- believe or not -- when it reality there's infinitely many belief choices. Who's to say that god wouldn't punish someone who believed in a false idol more than someone who didn't believe in any religion? I don't particularly care for Dawkins' theological writings, but I think he summed it up fairly nicely: "We are all atheists about most of the gods humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further." Oh yeah, definitely. Someone is right and everyone else is wrong. It's impossible to know. Hell, maybe everyone is wrong. I guess it boils down to I believe more in me being right than someone else being right, which doesnt mean I'm not wrong. Who knows, maybe i'll come back as a snail.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) It's not a question of being rewarded...it's a question of having free will. Seems kind of odd that a person would be given something to use as he/she sees fit only to be told at the very end that they were doing it wrong. Well, with that logic should murderers and rapists be absolved because after all, they were just using their free will?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) I just find it difficult to believe that "God" would be spiteful. Seems a bit immature. GOD: So you lived a long good life, staying true to your spouse, raising 2 children with love and care, donated a substantial amount of time and money to charities, taught as a school teacher in an impoverished area, and served in the Peace Corps? Soul: Yes GOD: Well f*** you. You didn't believe in me. Off to hell with you! It's not about spite. I can't speak for other religions, but I know with most of Christianity it is believed that non-believers, if virtuous/good/etc, won't be punished, but would be in a purgatory/limbo type place. I don't necessary believe that, nor do I believe a lot about what Catholicism says, but I do believe there is some sort of greater power out there that is beyong my comprehension.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:23 PM) Yes. I guess I just think, God is something we cannot possibly know. That's why its called faith. And I can't really say with any certaintly whatsoever what will happen when I die, or when you die, or anyone else dies. That's why it doesn't sit well with me when people say things like "you better be right", because that is only meaningful if you are also willing to say "I better be right". I think he was using the universal you. Plus, that goes both ways. If you believe and expect to be rewarded and end up being wrong, whoops. But if you don't believe and end up being wrong, uh-oh!
-
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) Wanna get the opinion of someone who has faith there's a God...so, if there is one, why would said God give us free will to decide whether or not we have that faith? And if so, why would someone that doesn't believe be punished for exercising their free will? Because, if there is a God and I am punished for not believing, then free will is a hoax and there's really no purpose to life other than total service to that God. And please, none of the..."serving people is serving your God" stuff...serving your fellow man should be done regardless of belief in a higher power. Discuss. To put it simply: Free will gives you the choice to believe what you want, whether to have faith or to not, but if you choose not to believe and then end up being wrong, why should you be rewarded? Plus there's the whole Christian baptism thing but that's more of a man-made argument.

People who believe the universe appeared out of nowhere are retarded. People who make fun of those who are religious are ignorant and arrogant.

Goldstein on Viciedo: 'Very Disappointing'
ChiSox_Sonix replied to Marty34's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) Vicideo was paid a lot of money-more than Alexei Ramirez and AR went straight to the bigs and is doing nicely. I would think Cuban baseball is either AAA or better so the struggles have me a bit concrned and confused. But, he was picked for the Futures game so I am guessing someone other than just the Sox people see something in him that's positive Ramirez was 26...Viciedo was 19 -

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) I guess rum is my current collection/obsession. I grew up on beer and craft beer is still dear to me, but 20 years in the subtropics has turned me into a rum head I simply can't stand going out to most bars and trying to order a rum cocktail or classic tiki drink when I see the two bottles of rum they have behind the bar. I currently have 23 different rums on hand at home and still don't quite have everything I need to match the perfect rum with the perfect cocktail. Nor do I have nearly enough fine sippers. I'm down to a single type of aged Martinique rum right now, and only have one Demerara on hand, so that's kind of embarrassing. And no. That doesn't make me a alcoholic. There are other factors I blame that on. I love Rum. What's your favorite? I bought some rum in the Domincan last summer that was great. Also, surprisingly, I tried a rum on my cruise that was a Captain Morgan brand actually but aged about 20 years that was phenomenal. It had subtle hints of vanilla that was just great. I don't normally drink rum straight but that was too good to mix.

Coins and antiques. Not just any coins though, I prefer ancient stuff. Some of the stuff I have are from: -Elizabeth I (1580's) -Stephen Bathory of Poland (1570's)...he was the uncle of Elizabeth Bathory -Constantius III -Trajan -Hadrian -Napoleon III (1860's) -Also have a couple Nazi coins Also I have a few amulets from ancient Egypt dated around 400BC. Two are blue faience, not sure of the other (a scarab). One of the amulets is Anubis, the other is some dwarf god whose name escapes me right now.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:23 AM) End all U.S aid to Israel. End all military aid to Colombia. Restore full relations with Cuba. Israel - I would strongly disagree, we need a strong ally over there and they are it. Colombia - Yes and no. We mean well by giving them aid (Venezuela; drug war) but it is improperly used there and their government can be shaky. I could go either way on that one. Cuba - I think that's becoming the popular feeling now, actually.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) I'd add the qualifier to the Israel one...until they pull back all of their west bank settlements other than within the city limits of Jerusalem and pull their forces out of Gaza. No opinion on the Columbian aid. Strongly agree on the Cuban one...whenever that embargo ends that's going to be a great vacation spot. Not immediately, but within 5 years. And I personally can't wait to go there once that does happen.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 10:59 AM) I can't imagine he's that big of an obstacle right now. He also shouldn't be in the Senate. Same for all these people elected in the 70's/80's and are still there. There's gotta be some sort of limit.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 07:06 AM) Next time someone argues that the moon landing was faked, asked that person why NASA would decide to use real astronauts instead of actors and bring up how the director would've reshot the scene after the line was screwed up. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) Unless they just said he screwed up the line to make it seem authentic... Ya there are many reasons to defend against people who claim it was faked but that is not one of them. If they are trying to make it look real, using real astronauts instead of actors and without ultra scripted 100% grammatically correct sentences would be a lot more plausible.

Anyone pick up NCAA 10 for PS3 yet? I wanna know how it is before (if) I drop $60 on it.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:02 AM) a while ago I was talking about cap and trade and northsox said it had never worked, but, with SO2 I was under the impression that it worked rather well... and I don't believe I'm wrong. One thing wrong with our system is states with senators that they don't vote out, like WV, become a huge obstacle in moving the country forward. And I hate them. Like Teddy Kennedy? Agreed.
