QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 08:41 AM) Further explanation? Too many innings? Exposing him to all prospect lineups? Innings. He's dominated all year this year, I don't really see the point in exposing him to the hitter's paradise that is the AFL. Assuming he continues to pitch well the rest of the year, let him finish out the year and then let him rest till ST. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 08:53 AM) Are either Retherford or Morel viewed as legit prospects within the organization? With Getz and Nix, Beckham and Alexei, that infield's pretty well set, and CJ won't hit for enough power to play 3B or 1B at the big league level. Maybe, just maybe, he can make it as a utility player on an NL team. I think we can only send six, is that correct? Sending Retherford to the AFL would help us find out I think. He's hit at every level, so might as well give him some more looks.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 01:52 AM) This is like banging my head against a brick wall. Nick Swisher does not suck, his stats do not suck, his walks do not suck, his defense doesn't suck, and his power certainly doesn't suck. What sucks is that one bad year turned half a fan base against the guy. Now, that sucks. I love players who are afraid to swing the bat too.

QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 06:16 AM) I'm calling it now; Hudson destroys the AFL and breaks ST with the sox next year and puts up a line like this. ERA+ 114 WHIP 1.34 185 IP I don't want Hudson anywhere near the AFL this year. I'd send Viciedo, Retherford, Nunez, Santeliz, Hernandez, Micthell and Shelby

Did someone really start this discussion again?

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 06:53 PM) According to BA, he is very solid and has a good arm. He could be a good one. He is an ideal 3B because he is not only good with the glove, but has plus range. I hope he continues to progress because he looks like a keeper. He was also rated as having the best infield arm in the Org coming into the year by BA

Any better luck with Williams?

Looks like it's for Luke French (who?) and another prospect French doesn't even appear in their BA top 10 prospects list

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) It was a really wide strike zone, but it was being called on both ends that way, so I think a nice GMAFB is called for. I didn't get to see AJ's slide, I heard it on the radio. Was it dirty? It was kind of a borderline illegal slide but it wasn't dirty. The rule stipulates you must slide. It could be argued that AJ did more of a roll. Regardless, he did it to the opposite side of Cano and frankly never even came close to hurting him. What it did do was force Cano to make a bad throw which gave us a run. As for the strike zone, it was a little lagre, but you're right in that it was consistent. I have no problem with those zones as long as they stay the same. Complain in the first few innings, but if it doesnt change adjust and STFU about it

Manny and Big Papi tested positive for steroids in 03

QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) Were they testing for Andro? I doubt it. He says he stopped taking Andro when he heard rumors it was tainted with steroids... -
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 09:48 AM) I need clarification about this too. Is this a thread about Conspiracies we believe to be true, or just anything that is out there in the ether? For the most part people are just posting ones they've heard of, not necessarily ones they believe in.

Bronson Arroyo says he used Andro And therefore wouldn't be surprised if his name was on the list. Gotta say, this is probably a good strategy if he suspects that. Do it when everyone will be talking about Manny/Ortiz and come up with a semi-believeable pre-emptive excuse. Well done, sir. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:11 AM) Lost in this walk off is going to be how great Beckham was defensively last night. I am in NYC so the YES network is showing the game over and over and over, and I dont think alot of people are going to remember how dominant he was in the early innings at 3B. You mentioned the YES network. Being in NY i also watched the game on that. I usually don't mind them, but last night they annoyed me. They kept harping on AJ and his "dirty" slide, and the strike zone. Leiter really started getting on my nerves.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 08:32 AM) Detriot automakers have a bunch of patents for 100MPG cars or cars that run on tap water but are in cahoots with big oil to keep them away. I wouldn't doubt that for a second, actually.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 08:38 PM) Once the Sox officially fall out of this thing, Contreras should be released, and Hudson should come up. It won't happen, but that's what should happen. Why? Contreras has been solid since returning from Charlotte. There is absolutely no reason to flat out release the guy the way he's pitching right now. Not to mention that would be an absolute slap in the face to a guy who has done great things here and been nothing but class his entire time with the team. Releasing him is NOT what should happen. Heck, if at the end of August we're out of it and someone for some reason offers a decent prospect for him (possilbe 5th starter, 4th OF, backup catcher type prospect) I'm fine trading him. No reason to just flat out release him. Not to mention if we're out of it in September I'd like him here in case we call up Viciedo to get a taste of the majors. Just make it a little easier for him for his first cup of coffee. As for Hudson, wow. I don't usually do this, especially with pitchers, but I'm really wondering if maybe Hudson is ready if we need a spot starter sometime later this year. I don't want to call him up for the sake of doing it in September just to save his arm, but if we have a DH later on all of a sudden I could see him being a viable option.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:54 AM) Shouldn't have gotten the call in the first place. That is, unless his .262/.342/.374 line in the hitter's park in Charlotte is a good indicator of major league success. He's certainly having himself a nice July (to the tune of .326/.414/.465), but after his .271 OBP in June he was bound to rebound and even it out a bit. Our only options for an infielder are him, Ginter, Torres and Retherford. Torres hasn't done anything this year, Ginter's actually been alright and Retherford is till in AAA. I'm not sure if we have any spots on our 40-man open but only Lilli is currently on it. You say he shouldn't have gotten called in the first place, but we don't really have any real options other than him.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 02:07 PM) Agreed. You can't put guys there just because you think they took steroids. It's like someone saying they think Frank Thomas juiced and add him to a list. They have as much credibility as you. I don't remember Bagwell being linked, but he may have. Does anyone remember? I only put Bagwell and Kent there b/c I could have sworn people linking them in the past. -
QUOTE (Special K @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) I realize it was a low risk move, but it was an obvious low reward move... They should have known he was going to be awful by simply looking at what kind of shape he was in and the velocity on his fastball. Instead of trying to fill the rotation internally, it took them a waste of $1m to consider putting the younger, and in much better shape Clayton Richard. Now they've sunk even more money into Freddy Garcia who will not pitch for the Sox this year either. This amount of $ starts to add up, and whether it is $1.5 or $2 million, it is a lot, even though those of us who don't manage a payroll think it isn't. Maybe an extra $2 million would have been better used pursuing other players like Orlando Hudson at the beginning of the year, and we wouldn't have had to deal with this lead-off garbage to begin with. Methinks someone's complaining for the sake of complaining... I find it fascinating that you think the Sox should have known he'd suck (which he actually hasn't too badly considering he is the 5th starter) after he performed decent in the few starts he made at the end of last year. And being in shape has nothing to do with it. In fact, claiming Richard would be better because he was "younger and in much better shape" is funny. Pitchers don't have to be in perfect shape. Look at many closers, Sabathia, and Wells for example. Very few people were up in arms about this at the start of the year, but hindsight is 20/20 isn't it?
