How much job loss do you think is possible and which industries do you really see being impacted?

Another thought I had on my run today is what will the world be like when there is automation and there is severe job loss? Worse than this? Will I have to retrain and hope to God I can raise a family and become a nurse or get into informatics at the same time or try being a developer (if my current pursuit of something data related doesn’t work out and I want to get into something “essential”)?

It’s all germane to the discussion and this doesn’t rise to the level of discussion that the Filibuster had. Let it play out.

I can only imagine how things will be if climate change is severe as the doomsday scenario in my head or how I perceive things playing it out make it to be.

These times make me feel like it really pays to be in a position that is essential, like a trade, health care, in particular nursing, or in a public service. I feel non essential working in insurance, which is why I’m glad I’m leaving my company if people are hiring this summer, since my graduate degree will be paid for. Now I just hope we don’t get restricted anymore out using our work computer outside business hours so I can finish my project and class work by next Friday. I know, I should have a computer of my own but I did the rest of my grad degree on my computer without any issue and then this comes along.

Like what? raBBit made me nervous in the other thread about job loss and I can only stockpile two weeks of food if I am lucky. I can’t find paper products anywhere either.

I’m not a moderator but relax. The discourse has been civil, relevant and interesting. Health, politics, foreign policy and the economy - all of these factors are germane to the discussion.

I have never been involved with the stock market but I have thought about investing. I will probably speak to a financial advisor about some low risk options, but in the meantime, I was considering buying one or a few of these stocks to invest in. I can’t imagine what it must feel like. How do you get things to eat? Are you over there temporarily or permanently? I can’t imagine what things will be like without entertainment or sports. I work from home two days a week and go into the office three days a week. I am in a remote office at a job I could do in my sleep but do for the time being to get a bonus and collect tuition reimbursement for the remainder of my master’s program. I would prefer not to stay home all of the time. Even with political podcasts and sports radio on, it’s tough working from home every day and even gets lonely. I would much rather have a varied schedule for some sense of normalcy while I wait to finish my masters degree, wait until the end of July hits and leave. Edit: I’ll probably keep riding the BNSF line until things start to get really bad.

I would find a way to take the position for a year, get the skills under your belt, take the hit financially and then leave for somewhere else once you have gotten the experience. It’s easier said than done but those are my initial thoughts.

How significant would the pay cut be and could you manage? Would the skills you obtain help you after a year of employment and would that give you enough to use those skills at another company making more money? And is there a chance to counter for some more money?

Wasn’t Trump trying to do something like this with hospitals in terms of price transparency? It was one of the only things I applauded him for, even if it will be fought in courts.

For some people, they do fall into their work instead of picking their career.
