6/10 GDT Houston Astros @ Chicago White Sox
LDF replied to Condor13's topic in 2015 Season in Review
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 11, 2015 -> 04:24 AM) The astros are a boom or bust team. They hit homeruns or they lose, it's really that simple. Plus they strike out a ton. by any chance, did you look at the whole team and their batting avg??? you called it there. either power or nothing. -

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 11, 2015 -> 03:38 AM) About twice the slot value then. That's where a lot of the extra money went. since we, the fans are not privy to inside info, i am going to trust Hahn and his people. -
QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 11, 2015 -> 03:24 AM) I actually wouldn't go for him as he does one thing really, extremely well (hit for power) and everything else poorly. It still makes him well above average offensively but players that do one thing really well tend to get overrated ahead of guys who do everything above average, even though the latter guys are usually more effective as a sum. you may be right, but when a team needs help.... can't argue when it is available. but that price, i really need to think about it, if it ever gets there.

jeez, i just got on to look at the score for both chi teams ..... and chi looking good. now my amazement ...... looking at the today's lineup, how did the sox put up 4 runs, let alone win tonite's game. we this team is going good, it really is going good. yesss put that on the board.

QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:47 PM) I clicked on the BRef link to Spencer Adams, and... It's a real shame the guy never really put it together. Still stuck in Low A at the age of 116. Got to admire his love of the game; I think most would've given up on the dream and hung up the spikes by now.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:09 PM) No surprise. Byler was indeed the first person off the board today Sox select Danny Dopico, pitcher from FIU fastball at 88 and decent stats. -
QUOTE (Dunt @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 03:25 PM) I'd say that's a pretty positive start out of Adams esp with the fact that he is rebounding from a horrible beginning. Adams is a future sp and i can't wait until he start to moves in up.... Lowry is surprising the crap out of me. i can't wait to see this new updated top prospects now, esp with the newly acquired drafted prospects.

there are a lot of picks that can be value picks. at this stage, i trust the org. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) They blew it up in 2013 and just let the team suck in general in 2014. This year looked great on paper, but the crime is poor coaching right now. overall, you got a good point, but ref to poor coaching, i buy that, but is that the reason the pitching is not doing as well as expected??

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:50 PM) HIckman will probably start but I think his major league future is as a RP when it comes to this side of the org, pitching, i really trust the sox org and coop. -

QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:46 PM) As above, so below: the Sox draft room TV is one of the smallest in the majors...sound a bit familiar? it almost looks as the same size of the cardinals. at least they upgraded the phone systems from soup cans and string the roto phone. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:44 PM) Yesterday I said there is "BPA" and "signable BPA"...which is essentially the same thing I'm saying here. no look further back in the thread. you mention the best player available. then when we were discussing it, you later came back to further define your position. either way, this was yesterday. -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:40 PM) This was in regards to the 1st round. For example, the Sox wouldn't reach for Chris Betts at #8 because their major league team has a hole at catcher. That's all that was being said. You stack your board if you are picking in the top 10 and take the best guy regardless of position. As you get later in the draft though that changes. if you say so. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:33 PM) This is the White Sox draft slots. The combined bonuses awarded to the players drafted in these slots, plus any bonuses over 100k in rounds 11-40 cannot exceed the total figure on the bottom of $5,347,500. At $5,347,501, penalties start kicking in. If the total is 5% over $5,347,500, we lose a draft pick. The penalties get worse at 10% over your allotment. Rd 1 $3,470,600 Rd 4 $508,000 Rd 5 $380,400 Rd 6 $284,800 Rd 7 $213,400 Rd 8 $174,800 Rd 9 $163,200 Rd 10 $152,300 Total $5,347,500 Here is why you can't just draft BPA anymore. Round 1, best player available wants a $5 million bonus. Guess what, if you sign him, you only have $347,500 to sign all of your picks in rounds 2-10, or face the draft penalties. If your next picks gets a $2 million bonus, not only are you paying A 100% TAX on everything over your allotment, you also forfeit your next TWO first round picks. See penalties below. http://www.bleachernation.com/2015/06/05/2...-penalties-etc/ thanks for adding the break down on the pool money. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:22 PM) The operative word there is "available" Someone may be available to be drafted, but not likely to be signed. They ultimately aren't available. that is, by definition semantic. at the time, there were no contingency, no reason for other priority when making the selection other than BPA. this definition is changing to suit other people reasoning. even yesterday, you mention BPA and you felt as you didn't need to add any parameters there as a suffix. -
in Kanny, i wonder how the match worked, between Kolek and Adams. either way, i am not disappointed and consider this a little hiccup.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 03:08 PM) People need to understand that the process has changed and is still evolving. The last CBA completely overhauled everything that used to be true about the draft. The idea of BPA is completely gone in the MLB draft. The concepts of signability and fitting a guy into your caps as you spend on others is now everything. Getting a guy to agree to cheap terms ahead of time so you can use his slot money on a higher rated player in another area becomes more important. If a team were to literally draft BPA for the first 10 rounds, they wouldn't be able to sign most of them and it would look a lot like Houston's draft disaster from last year. The dominos of having one player out of place when it comes to signing can destroy everything else. No other sport is like this. As a baseball fan you are best served to just forget the phrase "Best Player Available" when it comes to the draft. It is as dead as the 4 man rotation and 150 pitch outings. this was a discussion a couple of weeks ago when someone mention, "you always draft the BPA instead of need or anything else". also the philosophy of "BPA is the right way to run the org". so answer me this, when this whole term change??? -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 01:46 PM) You just can't take BPA in the baseball draft though. Especially in the top 10 rounds. If you are taking a guy in rounds 1-10, he better sign otherwise you are screwed money wise. If Everett or Hooper were going to sign, they would have been drafted in the top 10 rounds. Someone will take them toady and take a shot at signing them but they are most likely headed to school. As for the White Sox, they did a pretty good job considering what they had to deal with money wise. There just wasn't much money to go around and they drafted a few guys with upside. Fulmer was a no brainer at 8. Hickman was a huge value where he was acquired. The pitcher from Rice has promise and the 1B has a ton of power. They went way under in a few spots but they probably had to. I'm guessing Fulmer will be at slot and Hickman will be over. then remember this debate of BPA for next yr discussion. when the discussion comes around on getting or not getting the BPA. -
you know, i was starting to feel much better, than this crap happen. Cle is starting to piss me off, oh how i hate cle. right there with the sCrubs.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:26 AM) I wonder if Springer will face discipline for his... display i like it, not as a fan from another team, but i see it this way. hou on a 6 game loosing streak, Hou needed to show some life, so springer, even if he was wrong and knows it, took one for the team. just to kick start his team. that is how i see it. Chi better be ready for tomorrow.

Montas with a no hitter ??? wow!!!!!

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 04:29 AM) I think the best way to look at this is what Sox prospects would fans be willing to give up for Shark and translate those prospects to the equivalent Astros prospects. Would Sox fans be willing to give up any one of Adams, Montas, Danish, Anderson for 3 months of Shark? there are a couple ways to think about that. esp since i am not seeing it in your post. the intangibles are this, when was the last time Hou won the WS?? when was the last time Hou made it to the WS?? can Hou win it all and what is missing?? those question, when answered will dictate the course hou should take.
