QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 27, 2007 -> 07:17 AM) I'm lucky I guess, my wife LOVES Vertigo, and pretty much all things Hitch. Liking Hitchcock is a watermark for a successful relationship. Don't like him? Sorry, not going to work.

Not to be a hypocrit on the environment
I'm pretty limited on what I can do (we don't have any alternative energy stuff here). But here's my little list: I don't use airconditioning. I have window fans that I use. During the winter, I set my thermostat at 65 in the night and at 40 during the day I buy locally grown produce whenever possible. I only allow myself a half a tank a gas per week, and limit my travel to account for that. I've replaced all of my upstairs windows with energy efficient ones (downstairs will get replaced as soon as I get the moolah). I have re-insulated my attic. I (my dad) replaced my basement windows and we resealed all of the cracks in the basement. I turn on the minimum amount of lights. I take short showers and wash my hair everyother day to cut down on water. I'd like to start composting--but my yard is very small and I'm not sure my neighbors would appreciate it. . .

I saw You Kill Me last night--it was hilarious. It's about a hitman, Frank (Ben Kingsley), who works for the Polish Mafia in Buffalo (NY). The Polish Mafia is having some problems with the Irish mafia, and so a hit is ordered on the head of the Irish mafia. Well, Frank is a drunk and he falls asleep and misses his shot. So, his bosses send him out to San Fransisco to get sober. It's a really funny and sweet story. And all of the scenes of Frank at AA are absolutely wonderful (also very good are scenes involving him making a list of people he's wronged). The humor is dark; I recommend it.

Fear God
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 08:04 PM) The sad thing about the Paris video and to add to your comment about other nations' outrage. In that video, she stops and answers her cell phone. Not only is the act of sex cheapened with the video tape (secretly -- having it done for capitalistic purposes with two+ willing adults is okay in a civil society) but she goes even further by being a whore to technology as well thinking that a cell phone is more important than her relationship with her man. Was the call really that important? I mean, really. If you're 'getting down', turn off the f***ing cell, y'know? I don't know why this post made my day, but it did.

Fear God
QUOTE(Yossarian @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) I listened for a minute or so, and that's about all I needed. My views on this guy would make no one happy, not the fundies, and not the Fla Sox secularists either. He is right about one thing. Christianity, as it stands now is lost. One thing to consider though, the fastest growing religions in the world, are those who profess strict and uncompromising moral strictures. Just a statement of fact, with no editorializing intended. I myself, would hardly be considered religious in the traditional sense. I think it will be interesting to see if that growth can be maintained. I think once there are political and economic changes in those areas, there will be rapid drift away from religion also. . .

Textbook Strategies
QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) I am really looking forward to this class. It is with one of my favorite professors and I love learning also. Actually I enjoy most everything on the positive side of the Psychology College. Disorders just don't excite me as much. I'll leave that to the half empty people. He's using Hergenhahn and Olson's text. Never seen that one. We generally use Domjan or Hilgard's. The undergrad's usually hate them because they are dense and really focus on learning and behavior (I don't rember any discussion about stuff like Dollard and Miller's discussion about learning and personality theory. You will have to let me know how that one is.

When I hear Prof mention paradigm shifts
QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) I was hoping for a memorize a couple dates, take a couple tests and get out of my life class, not a serious relationship My question is: It an idealistic young professor (or grad student) whose soul has not yet been crushed by academia, or a tenured faculty member who doesn't give a flying fart?

Textbook Strategies
QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) My Theories of Learning Prof, who has been using the same text for 25 years said if the saving were significant, but the previous version. I believe $12 versus $96 was significant. Ha. Learning also doesn't really change much. That being said, I heart (conditioning and) learning Also, if you look in the reference section of your book, and see R. Miller (he's kind of a big deal)--he's my professor. f***ing genius. Absolute genius.

Textbook Strategies
QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 09:32 AM) So when does your book come out? I am hearing discussed buying an older edition, pros? cons? stories? One Prof said buy the older if the savings were big, the other, a grad student teaching Test and Measurements (sound familar Soxy ) wanted the current. I actually try not to get my students to buy new books. But the edition can matter a lot depending on the type of course. If it's a Psychobio or Neuro book or Evolutionary psych it's usually usefull to buy the new book. Intro texts (and developmental) tend to be more fixed. And good luck with the graduate student, I know (now) that they can be a really mixed bag.

I just saw The Wind that Shakes the Barley. It's basically a movie about theBritish-rish war and the Irish Civil War told from a very pro-Irish/Republican stance. The movie tells the story of two brothers, one who is about to leave Ireland to practice medicine (Damien) and the other is the leader of a guerilla troop of Irish Republicans (Teddy). After witnessing the brutal death of a childhood friend, and the general brutalities of the british troops Damien decides to stay and fight. The movie is pretty graphic and can be disturbing (in one scene Teddy's fingernails are ripped out with pliers). But it packs a really heartfelt emotional punch. As the movie draws to a close, the Irish are offered a peace treaty that would give them some independence, but would keep them a part of the British empire. For Teddy and others (oddly) this is good enough. But for Damien, nothing short of full Irish independence and a break-down of the aristocracy will be enough. The brothers are pitted against each other. The movie ended in a way that I was not expecting, and I did shed a few tears. The acting was top notch, but at times the accents were quite difficult to understand, but overall a really great heart-wrenching movie.

Harry Potter Spoiler Thread
QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) OK. Finally finsished and I really enjoyed it and thanks for that article, Chaos. Now, what the hell was the baby whining on the floor in the Dumbledore / Harry limbo chapter? I think it was the part of Voldemort's soul that he killed when he "Avada Kedevra" (or however it's spelled) Harry. The description of the thing is very similar to Voldemort in Book 4 before he got his body back.
