  1. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) 1) I always enjoy Chicago when I get back there. There's no place quite like it. 2) Barcelona - love that city. Night Life is awesome, climate is great, history... *drool* 4) Merrakech, Morroco - nice climate, beautiful city, the souks (markets) are incredible. Mountains in the distance. On the other side of the mountains are the world famous sand dunes of the Sahara desert. Very picturesque. 3) Austin, TX is a pretty dang cool town. I'll share my thoughts about Paris later this year, Soxy. I also loved Barcelona. I promised myself to go back when the Cathedral is finished. Paris is nice. For me, I just went with no agenda or list of places to see--it's a great city to just wander around in. Make sure you visit a bunch of little bakeries. Yum.
  2. I'll second whoever mentioned the corolla. I love mine. My friends with civics also love them. My parents and sister also just bought Elantras (6 months ago and 2 years ago, respectively) and they seem to like them pretty well and haven't had any issues.
  3. 1.) Chicago. Do I need to explain why? 2.) Brussels. It's beautiful. The people are kind and amazing. The food is delicious. The beer is amazing. The city center looks like something out of a fairy tale. Stunning. And did I mention the food and the beer? 3.) Glasgow. It's like Chicago in Scotland. It's modern and gritty and beautiful. The people there love their city so much and are so proud of it--it just rubs off on you. There are also some really interesting eclectic museums there. The Glasgow Cathedral is also amazing. 4.) Berlin. Compared to other big European cities it's not as beautiful. But it feels so alive and so aware of its history. Basically, it is just a really cool vibe. 5.) Montreal. It's just lovely and it (like Berlin) has a cool vibe to it. The architecture is also very cool. 6.) Paris. This is the best city I have ever been lost in (and I've been lost in pretty much every major city in Europe). Personally, I found the people there reasonably nice and helpful. The cathedrals were astounding. The food was also a big plus. 7.) Minneapolis/St. Paul. Maybe it's just because I love Minnesota, but I love the cities. They're fun and young and hip with plenty to keep me amused. Places I really want to visit because they seem pretty cool: Helsinki and Copenhagen

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jan 22, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) They will not get a waiver. The Oscars makes nearly as much money as the Superbowl for ABC. But who will watch without the actors? Hell, I only watch to see the fashion.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jan 22, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) La Vie en Rose at least deserved best foreign nod. In support of the Unions, I will picket my TV during this. Or just watch Celebrity Rehab on VH1. Either will be about the same. I found the movie a little jumbled (we were supposed to see The Lives of Others, but couldn't so we saw La Vie en Rose instead--so I didn't have any background going in). But I thought Cotillard did an amazing job. I'm trying to think of another recent performance that was as good, but I'm drawing a blank. Simply amazing. And the music was amazing too, thanks to that film I have a TON of Edith Piaf on the old ipod. Do you think the Oscars will go on? It might not be that interesting if they don't get a waiver (which it's looking like they won't). I imagine then the Actors and directors also wouldn't show.

Not taking a damn thing because after 20 years of school I am course complete. Woo! I am, however, teaching Personality.
  7. Soxy replied to sox4lifeinPA's topic in SLaM
Julie Christie will probably win Best Actress--but that statue totally belongs to Marion Cotillard.
  8. Happy happy Birthday!!!

No time for lunch. Big meeting to go over data. woo. Might go out for dinner, but I've got a bad head cold, so maybe not.
  10. My tv is dead so I didn't see it but. . . 3 SEPARATE people have come up to me to comment that the Star Wars Princess Leia girl reminded them a lot (in dress, personality and mannerisms) to the person I share an office with. I'd seek out a clip--but one of them is enough I don't need to see another. . .
  11. Wtf? Totally work safe.
  12. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) Well, that is certainly interesting. The course is probably more a study than a how-to, as you point out. But I am not sure where the line is there, for a state school. I am not even sure that a Christian Ethics class is appropriate. Maybe it is. I don't find any of these courses offensive or anything - I just question whether or not government dollars should be spent on them. That is the appropriateness test I am getting at. Do you feel the same way about basic theology courses? Or other Ethics courses? Where would you draw the line for state funding?
  13. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) I tend to agree. I think there is a difference between courses like "Comparitive Religions" and "Human Sexuality", versus "How to be a Good Christian" and "Homosexual Initiation". The former are OK and probably good for a state school to offer, the latter are questionable. Maybe not unconstitutional, nothing that bad, but I don't think state schools should be offerring those courses. I'll be honest. I think that it's a misleading title--I understand why the instructor picked it, though. It would make students notice it and probably taking it--thus ensuring the class runs and the instructor makes money. That being said, I don't think the class is really here is how to be a gay man. As the course description says I think it is examining the rules and regulations of one particular, shall we say, subculture. To me, it sounds no different than the course I took on utopian communities--looking at their ways of life, traditions, initiation rites, etc (although my class was offered by American studies--not the English department). On the whole, I doubt this course is very much different from a Christian ethics class I took that looked at different societal issues, Christian traditions and their roots in the gospel, and different rites within the church. While this course wasn't called how to be a Christian--that was, essentially, what it was. And I am willing to bet that Michigan offers a similar Christian ethics class that covers everything from initiation (baptism, confirmation) to staying involved in the lifestyle (communion, tithing, etc).
  14. QUOTE(SnB @ Jan 14, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) http://www.bestweekever.tv/2008/01/10/the-...ds-of-all-time/ I was hoping for a Katie Holmes joke--and I was not disappointed.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) thank you. This is a tax increase on the non-voting poor, to benefit the middle class. I agree. No. No. No. I don't know why people think this would be an awesome idea.
  16. My blood pressure is usually too low to give blood. I also have very rolly veins.
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 01:28 PM) Best healthcare system in the world! Sorry. Had to. Hope things turn soon. Thanks. Well it has to get better. Yesterday I also realized I messed up the analyses of about 1/4 of a HUGE experiment I ran. I should just hide under the covers until tomorrow. . .
  18. Last night my cat bit the hell out of my hand while I was petting her when she saw the dog. I got blood ALL over two towels and my just washed comforter. The dog then threw up repeatedly for the next three hours and the new dog had it flying out the other end. When I went to the doctor this morning because my hand is uber swollen, the prescription he gave me (apparently cat bites get infected a lot) wouldn't get filled because eff'n CVS wouldn't recognize the new carrier of my prescription plan. After two hours fighting with them and MedCo I finally got my damn augmentum. Ugh. Worst day.
  19. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jan 8, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) But what does that class add to an English major? or any major? And thanks to whomever eliminated the double post. I have a new computer and the mouse is a little touchy. Welcome. And I am not sure how it is relevant to the English major--I only gave it a quick glance. Like I said, I think it would be very well suited to a Sociology or gender studies major. But as someone who has to design the occasional course for a major, there are usually some guidelines that need to be followed and requirements to satisfy the department and the university.
  20. I may have to eat my words on this but, I think you're off Reddy. If there is anywhere in the nation where Hillary will do better than Edwards (or maybe her best) it's on the East Coast.
  21. Who cares? They aren't forcing people to take it. Although I would have thought it would be a Sociology course as opposed to English.
  22. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 05:35 PM) Ya, that was a tongue in cheek comment, I figured it would be read that way. As someone with a psych degree, I understand the origins of mental illness. 16 and pregnant just means you are somewhat ignorant, not necessarily crazy. Or just plain stupid. Which also seems to run in the Spears family. . .
  23. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) Ive seen Bi Polar and borderline behavior in one of my ex's they truly turn into another person all together, its scary. But somehow this one rubbed off on her little 16 year old sister as well, figure THAT out. Um, mental illness often has a genetic component. If not genetic, they shared a similar environment growing up. Also, I think that being 16 and pregnant is quite different than shaving your head, beating a car with an umbrella and holding your kids hostage. . .
  24. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 05:17 PM) You'd have a large base of support from Soxtalk. Heck with the promise of the right cabinet post, I'd even vote for you!
