Saw Persepolis. Very good quirkly film. It had a nice balance of funny and sad. But it did seem to drag in parts. Overall I really recommend it.

Quotation from my mom: There aren't glaciers in New Zealand. It's in the tropics. Me: No mom it's right by Antarctica. Mom: No, it's in the tropics! Me: Please give the phone to dad now.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:58 AM) Look at history for a moment. When did the SCOTUS rule that school prayer was unconstitutional? 61 - 62? What was our country like (exempting civil rights issues, because that is one area we have drastically improved on) at that time. America was called 'Camelot' because of the quality of life in this country. The family was still strong, the nation was strong. JFK was leading us into what appeared to be even better times. Then he was shot. The beginning of Americans not trusting their gov't started on that day. We've been on a downhill spiral ever since that happened. I happened to believe that there is a definite correlation between that decision and moral and social decay of our nation. Correlation, maybe. Causation, I don't really buy it. Couldn't it have been the fear of living in the cold war? And the constant paranoia? Or the explosion of tv as a medium? Or the civil rights movement? I mean there are just so many confounding variables in that equation to definitely say X led to Y.

Please play nice with each other. Consider this the only warning this thread will get. Personally, I am not convinced that our lack of God as a nation is the cause of the school shooting/violence in general. Several countries with MUCH more agnostic/atheist tendencies don't have NEARLY the problem we do.

This is not the right place for this discussion for a "god" discussion. Let's stick to worrying about the people involved and showing support and care for them in this thread please. I will start a thread in the Buster--but let's keep this one apolitical.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) And many missionaries world wide. But we all know Americans invented the missionary position. You're welcome! -

I believe bonobos also do it missionary style. -
Unless it's a hooker, I hope no one gives his valentine money.

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Feb 12, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) So religion is too sacred to make fun of? Not at all. But if you want to claim to respect something, then perhaps you shouldn't belittle it. I would argue that comparing the Bible to Seventeen isn't making fun.
-
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Feb 12, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) What am I, an English major? I was asking for your personal definition. If you can't define a word, maybe you shouldn't claim to understand it. Because, clearly, you have no idea what respect is.
-
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Feb 12, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) Respect from me doesn't mean I can't make fun of it. I respect Cub fans and make fun of them all day. How would you define respect?
-
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Feb 12, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) I didn't group anyone. And I respect people's right to religious freedom, but I know the world would be better off without religion. How do you know? Do you have a source? Or is this just your opinion? Because if it is a fact, well, I need to see some evidence.

The Orphanage is coming to the art theater near me. I am super excited.

So, I have a dumb question. It says that if you don't owe income tax you will get less of a rebate. Does this mean that you will get a smaller rebate if you make less than what is taxable/that if you file when you don't NEED to because you made so little that you will get a smaller rebate? Or does this mean if you are already getting a refund because of the number of deductions you have taken you will get less of a rebate?

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 9, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) Does anyone here have any family members by-marriage who are just such a great fit and so wonderful that they become as close or closer to you than your blood relations? That was my "Uncle" Joe. Not really an uncle, but married to a first cousin. Unbelievably great guy, generous beyond measure, and lifelong diehard Sox fan to boot. He was diagnosed with lymphoma a couple of years back, and it progressed unbelievably rapidly and just ate him up. He died yesterday, way before he should have, leaving a wife, children, and new grandchildren way too soon. You will be missed by many, Uncle Joe. :crying Sorry to hear that Jim. Life can be so unfair.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 01:00 PM) So far he's used this speech to attack liberals, France, unions, "activist" judges, Harvard, and porn, and somehow linked porn to single-parent families. Wait, he actually said that bit about France? Seriously? I thought you were joking. If not, well, I have some Frencherds to make fun of.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 12:47 PM) Warning us that if we don't vote conservative, we'll be the "21st century France" With the delicious cheese or without the cheese? Because I really like good cheese.

I do it myself--but it's pretty easy because I make so little so I always just take the standard deduction. I filed two weeks ago, so hopefully I will be getting my refund soon!

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 09:50 AM) This is starting to have a Kennedy-esque feel to it. He would be the best looking President since Kennedy. Was Kennedy really a great president? With all the comparisons, I keep thinking that he wasn't that awesome. But the myth we've built up around Kennedy has overtaken his actual presidential legacy. Or am I off base here?

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 4, 2008 -> 06:35 PM) I would classify both HW in TWBB, and Jones' sheriff in No Country, more like victim/observers than protagonists. Sure you felt bad for them, and they seemed like good folks... but they didn't really DO much of anything in the affirmative. That, to me, is at the core of what was so different about those films, compared to many mainline ones. I would disagree (though I've not seen No Country), mostly because HW chooses to reject his father, and I think that is affirmative. I do see your point though, in many ways, I think the journey that HW makes should mirror the journey of the viewer (or at least that's how I felt).
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 4, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) Oops sorry, I meant his son, H.W. But after thinking about it some more, the townspeople? Society? For me the protagonist was definitely HW. The only time in that whole long movie that I felt anything was when HW spoke and said that he was glad he didn't have any of Daniel in him. He was really the only moral guiding light of the film (from his concern about Mary being beaten, the price Daniel would pay the Sunday's for the ranch, and his rejection of his father).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 4, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) My daughter took me to There Will Be Blood, she has seen it three times and loved it. Excellent three hours. I can't really describe it, it's kind of like Howard Hughes meets Texas Wildcatter with a twist of Road to Wellville. I wasn't that into it. I think I just expected something different. I do really want to see No Country for Old Men though. . .

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) In the linguistics profession, just how often does the phrase "cunning linguist" get thrown around? Honestly, I only use that phrase among friends. I have a feeling my adviser wouldn't find it nearly as hilarious as I do. . .I'm pretty cool for a linguist. Sad, huh?

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) How about employee engagement? I'm not sure I would be that qualified for a post there. Isn't that more social/Industrial Psych than Cognitive?
